The night before fthe only night you will ever already know exactly what you are wearing tomorrowj, is the worst and the alarm clock, still dusty, is set for six a.m. Then that day we've been waiting for has arrived. Freshmen, wearing brand new winter clothes -ml in 90 degree weather, are wandering helplessly around with maps wondering if it's an A day or a B day, and the Sophomores act as the guardians because they've just been through a whole year of degrading comments and are out for revenge, and the juniors are cool because they're veterans who have mastered the system, and they're bigger than just about everyone. . . except for the one and only God-like and majestic Seniors, who aren't even at school because they truly believe in tradition Qwho can get away with the most absences, or most realistically, who can forge the best.j This first day marks the I 'xMY'V2 ' 4 Wiki-B an j v YQ- If , , 45 M. fr IQ S 'S ,P 1 f' Q. It's always the same school, but we can tell it will be different. Instead of taking ten minutes to get lunch, it now takes thirty, and our new lockers seem to be in the same place as last year, except that now they won't even open. One lunch is hard to get used to, but the more the merrier, right? But the ci' i W 9.5, Opening 5 Theme .vw- change is welcome because it enables us to look into this place where we spend half our day land sometimes all of our dayl and actually be a part of the school. Some of us shoot baskets, some of us blow horns, and some of us study hard, but all of us go to school . . . together . . . and all of us are individuals that make Lynbrook what it is. The excitement of the first days soon wears away, and the routine of good old school starts to take on a definite shape. Seeing everyone happy and being with friends is great, but there is always something happening that can change our feelings and make us unique . . . we are set apart from everyone else, because nothing is stronger and more special than the individual. At times it seems that we are the only runners in the race, but the feeling of being in first place is just so great. The spectators on the sidelines are cheering you on and encouraging you to never give up, and these people are a big part of your life. School isn't only learning in the classroom, it's also learning all about people and how important they are to you . . . ttoo bad we can't have more outside learning classesll besides, what would you ever do if you had no one to talk to at brunch? The band, under the supervision of the renowned Stephen Stroud, made outstanding progress, especially when Greg Lamy was chosen to be a member of the MacDonald's All State Marching Band. The RAL- LIES this year kept us cheering and root- ing to bring all that Lynbrook spirit into one big yell. No wonder the gym was so noisy, with four very spirited classes get- ting together to show the Viking Pride. There was always class competition, which did get a little out of hand at times, but who's going to knock class pride? We needed to get out all of our aggressions, and what better way was 7 there than screaming at the top of our lungs? Of course, the seniors always won, but they deserved a break! fYou're only a senior once.J The underclass did almost as well, and proved to be great competition. There were tug- of-wars, balloon races, and lots of other games to boost the Viking fans. The UCLA band and spirit leaders paid us their biennial visit, and, as usual, the cheerleaders re- ceived their traditional rat- ings. The rallies were always something to look forward to Qespecially if you wentj. It was Friday and we could once again show our spirit and school pride. How many times did the l.V. team come close to taking the game,Qbut just missed itjwas hard to count. The spirit was there, though, and the l.V.'s never went to a game without some good support. It wasn't hard to see the determination and hard work put in by the players. The Frosh Team, or, according to the coach, the, SQUIRRELS, quickly learned how a typical practice was run. The monotony was broken when the Frosh polished off their last two opponents, this made up earlier losses. Next year it is felt, our teams will go nowhere but up. -g Qyjli rf fa..- W ' . There were many good times with Steve Roberts' demonstrations on the art of disco, good old Frolls, and funny skits in the auditorium, but the team also had its serious moments. Although the stats weren't ideal, the team was full of more spirit and togetherness than any other previous team. Football Fall Lynbrook Hockey, hats off to thee! The LYNBROOK FIELD HOCKEY TEAMS had reason to sing this year. The Varsity team took the D.A.L. championship, showing once and for all that Monta Vista was putty in our hands fmaybe not that easy, but we pulled through, right Stobe?l. The team was the most skillful and speediest ever, and their work together brought them to C.C.S. The lV's also took first place in D.A.L., led by Linda, the one with the beer belly, who did a great job handling the team and actually teaching them how to play hockey. There will always be a place in our hearts for jasper the Ball fwho was joined by MV, SHS, and H ballsj, and we'll never forget warm-ups Qdid you do your sit-ups?j, scrimmages, and those neat sprints that we always looked fonfvard to. Really, Stober. Don't worry, if we drop dead after practice, it's just because we're a little tired! With 4-B, Pavy, Steph, Ho-Ho, Glow-Brows, Peppy le Pu, Campbell Soup, Fajetti, Lineda, Swanny, and all the rest, the Varsity team always tried to help their pals on the lV team, and wish them all the luck next year with our arch enemy, Monta Vista. The team had a slow start with practice not beginning until two weeks after everyone else, yet this could not stop the Vikings. jeff Roy, the team's new coach, found a very talented bunch of players on his hands, and helped them work their way into C.C.S. The morning workouts were not the most memorable experiences, but the pay off was worth it. Led by captain Chris Cavanaugh, and supported by the excellent skills of Steve Duffy, Kevin Kirmse, and the rest of the players, the team finished high in league standings. Dave Okawa was the hero more than once, and QSlow Many Dan broke his nose early in the season. The best part of being on the team had to be sharing the pool with girl's swimming fthere were no complaintsj, and going to Golden Mushroom was great. The fun began after workouts, in the lockeroom setting off the smoke detectors, with the steam of our hot showers. Our meets always promised to be exciting, and they were. His intense workouts taught the runners many things, including how to run the wrong way at a meet, QColvin and Deagen, you've done it againj and how to stay un- right without knocking down other runners in a race lConrardy was a prime examplej. Only at the end of the season did the scenic route around the green field become a little drill. Even the prospect of gossiping with Swivel failed to break the monotony. Though you'd never believe it, the team found out that many things can be accomplished while running, especially having a good time. Serve, hit, volley, and score was the TENNIS TEAM motto. Mrs. Seltz, as the Varsity coach, trained the team well and led them to a second place in D.A.L. Mrs. Seltz was a great coach, and the team proved their loyalty, especially at the tough M.V. match. Miss Maher, the l.V. coach, helped her team by encouraging spirit with her famous pep talks and unforgettable slogans. No one ever ran their two miles each day, but the season ended well, with several girls placing in C.C.S. showing that tennis is iti. Clockwise from top: L. Hsu, K. Repanich, V. Wood, M. Animal Drill and l.R.'s free throw game also made practice a little more interesting. Spanish Club, the traditional sponsors, received aid from the NHS and Key Clubs, to make it an even bigger success. This year, the Club gave their gifts to the senior citizens at the East Side Catholic Services Center. A festive banquet dinner was served while the Lynbrook Band played holiday carols. This occasion even made the news with a special newscast on Ch. 11. Mrs. Campbell made the whole event possible, and the senior citizens were thankful to the Spanish Club for their kindness and good will. Q . f . Our very own school newspaper comes out twelve times a year, but that doesn't mean free time for the staff. Big G is the beloved advisor to the journalists who spent hours fact-hunting, writing, typesetting, and pasting under pressure from the dreaded deadlines. There were some lighter moments, however, especially raising money by throwing pies, eating pizza at Glen's house, and going out to dinner together. The staff was finally awarded the new composer after five years of pleadings and debates, but it was worth it! Teamwork was the l.V. and Varsity motto, and both groups of rough and tough wrestlers worked together to achieve a proud league standing. No one could ever forget the famous diet called starvation which could quickly shed five pounds in a few short hours. There never failed to be a nice supply of cookies in hand after weigh-in, which would soon be followed by an extra large pizza. QM-M-Mlj Losing weight wasn't the only hard part about being a wrestler, as many found out after a famous Coach Talbot workout. Yet the results were T plain to see when the IV and Varsity teams dominated every match, and showed everyone that with a great coach like Talbot, and an overabundance of skill and determination, nothing could .rig lst, happen but success. The team's favorite place to show their stuff was in our very own gym, where the crowd's support was enough to drive them on to victory. lack Holtorf, the team's coach, did an excellent job in creating one of the finest teams in Lynbrook history. The mighty Vikings placed second in the Blackford Tourny by scoring a total of seven goals. The team was loaded with fast, tireless guys who always seemed to work perfectly together. With a little forward line strength from Gordon and lock, and some quick maneuvers by Shoby, Rocket, and Coit, the soccer team was a tough one to beat. The defense was a dauntless one led by a bird, a white rhino, and an Aunt jemima. Thanks to some good support, long practices, tWar paint and garbage can destruction to relieve the monotony of drill after drill after drill J and a dedicated group of eager soccer players, Lynbrook once again proved to be a number one contender. The election was exciting, with the presidential condidates neck and neck most of the way. Other elected officials joined the new president to begin their services to the A.S.B., and proved their ability to work with little resources to produce big things for the students. Tuesday a.m., special meetings, legislative council, fund raisers, and special services all showed that our representatives in student government really wanted to help and had that real Viking spirit! Nich- O It has been a tradition at Lynbrook High School for the fearless faculty for in this year's case, coachesj to walk upon the basketball courts to battle the faculty of Miller junior High. The game this year never had a dull moment, with the score staying too close for comfort until the last exciting minutes. The Lynbrook team showed their strategy superior by pulling through with a final score of 59-55. The referees were the fairest ever seen, fwe won't mention that they were Lynbrook peersl, but we know the reason for our glorious victory was the two brave women players! With the success of this year's basketball stars, next year could see the vikings turn up another well-deserved win in the annual FACULTY BASKETBALL game. lwfcfftr .qxs 'many ,H Limo, K A-'Z Cll. sig . ., 4 , . nua. - 'W fi: ,,,,, is Z3 4.-- ' f . ,LL-A1 ,,,..w I l Af A,,.v P' The drama department at Lynbrook was full of laughter and giggles with their professional staging of the spring play, My Sister Eileen . The light comedy was not only enjoyable to watch, but as the cast soon learned, a joy to put together. The lead parts, those of Eileen and Ruth, were filled by Donna Hearn and Vera Djorjavich, while john Nicolletti was the Artistic Mr. Appopolous. Offstage, there were also jokes circulating, including Tony's heart pangs over Vera, Mr. B's favorite drink tTabj, and the occasional absence of Donna at the beginning of rehearsals. There were some wrinkles to smooth out, like Vera's uncontrollable bursts of laughter with Tony, and the hole in the platform that everyone kept falling through, but what are rehearsals for? The end result was the most successful play of the year, and one that brought a smile and a chuckle out of everyone who saw My Sister EiIeen . 1 jigs Strings, horns, sheets of music, hours of practice, and Mr. Stroud all spell out one thing: the Lynbrook High School Band. With such successes as the Christmas Concert, and the Santa Clara Honor Band, the LHS Band put a big mark in band history. As leader of the fine musicians, Stephen Stroud showed fine organization and precise direction, all were thankful for his dedication. Vienna was somewhat of a disappointment but maybe next year funds will be more plentiful for less scarcej and our Band will be able to show the world that Lynbrook makes the finest sounds around! The Girls' Choir practiced for hours on end to polish up their performances. All members found the work gratifying, especially when they worked all together to make the best sounds. The Concert Choir seemed to be fooling around most of the time, but their concerts were no joke! This year's choir put on the best of shows, while having fun at the same time. jazz Choir traveled around the city, and performed at Pier 39, Saratoga Village, Old Mill, and numerous other places to very receptive audiences. The team has grown in strength and number with each successive year, and this year is no exception. The golfers travel to the many golf courses in the valley, fFairvvay Glen is their absolute favorite, right guys?j, where they drive, chip, and putt up a storm. Dan gets a lot of criticism, Q Move your head, Dan, we can't see! j but the guys are a great group, who work hard out on the greens. Half of the team was on the De Anza swim team, which made the Vikings bound for a high CCS standing. Dan Coran and Chris Cavanaugh led the way with outstanding performances, and the new freshmen and sophomores soon followed. Spring Softball Starting the season later than usual, yet coming out on top earlier than usual, was our LHS Gymnastics team. The j.V. and Varsity teams saw themselves as one working unit bending, twisting, flipping, vaulting, and leaping towards their goal of a league championship. Leading the team was first time coach Linda Malone and returning graduate Kathy Brown. Team members and coaches had an extra tough job ahead of them because of injuries, but nothing can stop the Vikings. With a close knit team mixed with spirit, work, and skill, the LHS gymnasts made league competition and winning look easy. 1 in xi ffflksf 15? as Back row K Hung H Lashbrook K Kute C Salem M Bostlc T Brown S Evers I Tutko, L.
