Brown was born in Dickinson, North Dakota on April 3, 1931. He attended St. Patrick's Parochial School and Central High School in Dickinson, and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. While at Marquette University, Commander Brown ,was a Naval ROTC student. He was commissioned Ensign, USN, on June 10, 1953. Commander Brown's early sea duty included assignments aboard the USS Lenawee, an assault transport, the cruiser USS St. Paul, and the destroyer USS Fechteler. He later served as Executive Officer aboard the destroyers USS Gregory and USS Somers. ln August 1965, he received a Master of Science degree 3 in Management from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, ig Monterey. 1 - , Commander Brown has served as an instructor at the NROTC Unit, University of Oklahoma, and twice on the Staff of Commander Cruiser Destroyer Force, U.S. Pacific . Fleet. He served as CRUDESPAC Management Systems Director before taking command of the USS LYMAN K. l l I 1? f , SWENSON in September 1968. 1 Commander Brown holds the following awards: Bronze ' Star Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, China Service 1 Medal, National Defense Medal, Armed Forces 3, Expeditionary Medal iKoreai, Vietnam Service Medal, and .1 , the Vietnam Campaign Medal. Q i Commander Brown is married to the former Daphne F. I Collins, also of Dickinson, North-Dakota. Commander and 3 , 50 Mrs. Brown and their five sons live in San Diego. COMMANDER LARRY 1.
