Twentyesix years ago, on February 12, 1944, the proud new destroyer, DD-729, was launched and officially became USS LYIVIAN K. SWENSON. Built by Bath Iron Works Bath, lVlaine, the SWENSON was commissioned and joined the fleet on lVlay 2, 1944. The USS LYIVIAN K. SWENSON was named in honor of Captain Lyman Knute SWENSON, USN, who commanded and was lost in action when the cruiser USS JUN EAU was sunk at the battle of Savo Island in 1942. During World War Il operations, the SWENSON received sole credit for shooting down two enemy planes and partial credit for destruction of two others, she destroyed twelve Japanese mines, rescued eight - pilots, and repelled numerous KAMIKAZE attacks. i K.
