'Il f I , Y .1 ' fl , ve ,, The specific linguistic objectives of the foreign language depart- ment are to help students develop the ability to communicate with a fair amount of skill in everyday situations typical for the young adult, develop skill in reading for comprehension and pleas- ure and unite a simple free composition with clarity and correct- ness in vocabulary, idiom, and syntax, and with a feeling for the level of language approximate to the task. The burden of foreign language learning is on the student for he must learn to be on his own to be a self-starter. ln the beginning weeks, however, the teacher is at times a combination of a choir teacher and a director of a play. After the student is helped to see the characteristics of the language, of how to judge his performance, he must begin to -function independently so that he can use his second language for purposes he considers important. .ls U
