In his search for this understand- ing, man has called upon magic, demons, spirits, gods, and essences to help him explain some of the perplexing and fearful events of nature. But man continued to struggle and to learn, and began to understand more about the mysteries of nature. The growth of scientific knowledge has been uneven and often uncertain but it has been fruitful, for it has led to further in- vestigation. Science is dynamic and must be regarded as an ac- tivity, thus the present state of knowledge is of importance chiefly as a basis for further operations. In the mathematics department at Lyman High School, we aim: 1-to develop in the pupils an appreciation of the importance of mathematics as it exists in their surroundings and also as it affects their daily living 2-to make them familiar with the part mathematics has played in the past, is playing in the present, and will play in the future of civilization 3-to develop the mathematical potential of each pupil to his highest capacity of achievement 4-to create interest in means as well as in end-results 5-to stimulate clear and accurate original thinking 6-to emphasize logical reasoning and understanding rather than manipulation and mechanical performance 7-to develop such desirable characteristics as honesty and self-reliance 8--to introduce many of the newer ideas of mathematics to meet the needs of the future mathematician and scientist.
