A class ring symbolizes many things. To the sophomore, it represents' all that he is striving for and all that he looks forward to in the next three years. To the junior, it is a prized posses- sion, acknowledging past achievements but challeng- ing him with greater things. For the senior, a school ring is a tangible, enduring reminder of all the joys, sorrows, trials and triumphs he has known at Lyman. Because this ring means so much to the students of Lyman, the 1970 Greyhound is devoted to showing that our ring and the seal which it bears represent the full scope of being a member of Lymanas student body. Pictured on the seal are the clasped hands of F riendship, the torch ofLeadershW, and the lamp of wisdom signyfying Scholarship. W e hope that as you relive the 1969-1970 school year in this book, you will come to realize that Lyman is a living, vibrant, ever-growing personwcation of our ring and its seal. by Q 9 N NL, X9 as si ix LQ 'Q - Wy wa K. Because he has kept his promises to his contemporaries by completely devoting his life for seven years to Lyman, by adding or rehabilitating permanent building, by establishing a new school, by expanding its curriculum, and by adding and strengthening new departments, but yet never losing sight of Lyman's goal: to create a center of intellectual activity with a spiritual end. Because he has kept his promises to his successors by working for the future well-being of both the student and the school and by establishing a school with an undefeatable spirit of progress and pioneering that will remain a challenge for the people who will follow him. Because he has kept his promises to himself by, even in the .midst of his busy life finding time to read and think and grow, by never being impatient with people and never being too busy to stop and talk and by bringing himself to be respected as a worthwhile citizen, not only of the school but also of the community in which he lives. Because he has kept his promises to God by continuously trying to strengthen the magnitude and stability of his Christian character and by serving his denomina- tion through leading in all areas to help find the utruthf, Because of these and all other reasons which we are unable to express-because he did for this school in seven short years what many thought a century could not accomplish, we dedicate this, the 1970 Greyhound, to rr.f+1.'.w:12f'.'.-Ify 'f'fwfq'fff2Qnnfl?-I I I nuff, I I I LM U. . ,L E xl' - .I-11. He has fascinated the enthusiastic, en lightened the confused, and interested the uninterested. This man has be at ease with Lyman students, and he has imparted a respect and a kind love for mathematics to each young mind that he has reached. Because has played such an important role in the growth of Lyman and the bett ment of her students, and because he has decided to retire to his farm New York at the end of this school year, we of the Annual Staff dedica the Scholarship section of this hook to Mr. Button. Now, for next time, we would like to wish him much happiness and good fortune in the yi to come. t 4 I C -nd!! The uClass of 70 will be the first class to graduate from the new facility. Many of you have expressed pride that your class will be first. As time marches on and you reflect on other events in your life, it is my hope that you will have many firsts of which to be proud. The change from Mold to anew Lyman was one that called for the co- operation of everyone. It is our sincere wish that with the new facilities each Lyman student will be able to gain a finer, more extensive and more meaningful education. Sincere best wishes to the 1970 graduates. May you find that which you seek, and achieve that for which you strive. Dean of tuclents John R. Schuller B.A., M.A., University of Florida The general goals for the total school guidance and counseling program are shared by all persons who seek to help children. The purposes of guidance services are to add new dimensions through systematic planning, providing additional knowledge and professional skills to strengthen existing programs and offer- ing new services where there is a need. A guidance and counsel- ing program will in no way displace the teacher's role, but should make it possible for him to perform more effectively. Emphasis shall he placed on the developmental and preventive aspects rather than the remedial. The specific goals are: To assist the pupil in relating his interests, capabilities and aptitudes to his aspirations and life goals. To help the pupil analyze himself and utilize his alternatives. To aid the teacher in identification of and provision for the individual pupil's intellectual, emotional, social, and physical characteristics. To help parents and teachers with their understanding of the individual pupil as he relates to school, career choice, and society. To assist the faculty in individualizing education for all pupils. This year transformational grammar has been added to English Ill so the language forms will be seen in a different light, although the aim of clear, correct usage re- mains constant. Finding information and making in- formed judgments are basic skills necessary for sue-- cess in all three areas. Journalism and speech and drama students get practical experience in self-expression as they present the school paper and the play to the student body. In his search for this understand- ing, man has called upon magic, demons, spirits, gods, and essences to help him explain some of the perplexing and fearful events of nature. But man continued to struggle and to learn, and began to understand more about the mysteries of nature. The growth of scientific knowledge has been uneven and often uncertain but it has been fruitful, for it has led to further in- vestigation. Science is dynamic and must be regarded as an ac- tivity, thus the present state of knowledge is of importance chiefly as a basis for further operations. Understanding what science means is a goal that we hope each student will achieve through participation in the laboratory and supplemental activities associated with the science courses here at Lyman. .JU Department Head k 1- .f 'lisp - ..::., l lQuu,..g Xfiisiff 4 Robert H. All students need to acquire information, understanding, appreciations, attitudes, and skiils that will best serve them as individuals and as members of society. A most important goal is the development of an understanding of the political, B i 1 l. f .14 economic, and social worlds in which we live-for more effective democratic citizenship, and for a more satisfactory individual adjustment to present-day society. Stu-dents should acquire strong feelings of pride in, and appreciation of, the American heritage of freedom which is an outgrowth of our historical develop- ment. Our position of leadership in world affairs challenges the social studies to develop in students an informed historical sense to'clarify contemporary problems and to analyze the domestic and international responsibilities of the United States in our times. In consideration of the nature of contemporary society, industrial arts education provides instruction in the areas 'of industrial technology for the de- velopment of insights and understanding about modern manufacturing, communi- cations, construction, power, and transportation. Learning experiences are provided which help to discover, identify, and develop student talents for a more effective selection and completion of further academic, vocational, technical, or professional courses. Through the use of tools, machines, materials, and processes, industrial arts courses develop a measure of skill in designing, experimenting, planning, construct- ing, and evaluating instructional projects. ln this respect industrial arts makes its unique contribution to the education of all youth. Industrial Arts in an integral part of the total school program' and should be available to all students at all grade levels. While industrial arts is general educa- tion, it is also related to and lays a foundation for vocational, technical, and professional programs. Indus Things go better with Coke?! Clinton F. After the student is helped to see the characteristics of the language, of how to judge his performance, he must begin to -function independently so that he can use his second language for purposes he considers important. .ls U The major goal of Home Econom- ics at Lyman is to prepare students for a successful life in the spheres of self, home, and family. We enter this world with enthusiasm for a new life and leave Lyman High School with the traditions we've helped to uphold and those we may have helped to create. This year has been one that will be remembered and cherished by every member of the graduating class. Every student has special memories that no one else shares: the memories of achievement, accomplishment, and friendship. We may be sad to leave, but we've leamed responsibility and now we must leave the halls of Lyman High School to seek what life holds for us. Z 73 Senior Statistics ABEL, GEORGE: D.E.C.A. 4. M Cindy Bacchus Career Da Lyman instigated its first Career Day on January 27 for the purpose of better acquainting the stu- dents with occupations in fields which they might later pursue. The program was organized by a group of students with the help of the guidance department. Speakers representing many profes- sions were kind enough to donate their valuable time. We hope that the school will continue this program as the students found it to be very in- formative. HIN J 1 Ax K 3' Q Ki 1 v l,,, , 14513 ,-ff.
