Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1987 volume:

The Signer, Every year the word “Signer is printed on the front of the yearbook. What does it mean? No, its not the yearbook company. The yearbook is called “Signer in honor of Dr. Lyman Hall. Dr. Lyman Hall was a native of Wallingford, who graduated from Yale and became involved with Revolutionary politics. He signed the Declaration of Independence for the state of Georgia. Hence, the name “Signer . 5 Flashback to September 3, 1986, the first day of school. The summer vacation was over. We arrived at Lyman Hall with a lot of questions. How had everyone changed over the summer? Were there any new kids in school? Did anyone move away? How tough is my schedule? How will our sports teams do this year? It was time to discipline ourselves after the freedom of summer vacation. We had to get used to the bells, the crowded halls, homework, and changes within the school. There were newly acquired teachers to replace those that had retired. The modified system of two lunch waves created a hectic atmosphere until we adjusted to the crowd. Remember trying to get food, then attempting to find a place to sit? Another change was the refinished gym floor, painted orange, blue and white, which added vibrance to the indoor sports events. The new year was a time for freshmen to discover different people, experiences and the freedom of high school. For others, it was a time to discover various concepts and broaden their horizons. Future goals were set and new plans laid out. 8 9 FLASHBACK-SEPTEMBER 12, 1986 The Lyman Hall football team defeated Maloney to land Coach Phil Ottochian his 100th career victory. This mark incited the other fall sports teams to start their seasons with the same intensity. The field hockey team had its best season in a number of years under veterean Coach Phyllis McQueeney. Lack of participants caused the girl’s swim team to struggle through their season, but the bond between the teammates was one of great spirit and unity. The cross country squads discovered the winning feeling behind freshman sensation Jessica Cosko. Under Coach Bob Burghardt the girls and boys runners entered the tough Houstonic League with a new feeling of competitiveness. The volleyball team also suffered from lack of players, but again, the Trojan spirit remained prevalent among them. Perhaps the brightest stars of all the fall sports were the members of the boys' and girls’ soccer teams. The boys, under the new Coach Joe Goral, compiled a 10-6 record, good for third place in the Housy which qualified them for post-season action. The girls finished with a 10-1-3 record, second in the league. They, too, qualified for the State Tournament. 10 11 Remember when we, the Class of 1987, entered Lyman Hall as freshmen? The freedom we gained was much desired but also brought on a nervous anticipation to begin our new life in high school. Throughout our four years here, we have outgrown our freshmen ways and matured into responsible individuals. He have gained many new friends during our years here, and they have helped us through the tough times. These friends provided great memories that will last the rest of our lives. Their support was a guiding force behind our success and happiness during our four years at Lyman Hall. Although our group of friends may have changed, they have always been there for us, willing to help. Now that we have graduated from Lyman Hall and are moving on to achieve our goals, we will look back fondly on the good times we have had in high school. The friends we made will always be that, friends. Good luck to you the Class of 1987, may your dreams become reality. 12 TRICIA L. ACABCHUK 'IRISH'' CHICKY Happiness is just a thing called change. Whitne Powder Puff Flashback to a muddy November 26, 1986 8s the excitement of the Thanksgiving pep rally gave way to the annual powder puff game, the Trojan senior girls realized there was another obstacle — the weather. It was raining and cold, and the Sheehan field was virtually a swamp. Yet the gridironettes marched out with enthusiasm. The intensity of the pre-game drills let the crowd know that the conditions weren’t going to dampen their spirits. They played a hard fought game backed by a relentless defense, but suffered a 6-0 loss. In any case, the Class of 1987 made us proud of their determination. FRONT ROW: A. Klit ere imp, S. Hmeline. C. It had been a long time since the Trojans last victory which occurred over Maloney at Ceppa field on opening day. The young squad regrouped, and pulled out a win against the town rival Sheehan Titans in the annual Carini Bowl. Time ran out in regulation play in the Thanksgiving Day game with no score and a Kansas overtime was needed to decide the victor. Lyman Hall came out with a hard earned 6-0 overtime win. It was a happy ending to a somewhat dismal season. • ■ V« '$St ij V £v‘ u ■ ■ First Row: J. Berube. R. Pelletier. B. Corazzini. E Char-bonneau, B. Goldstein. K. Distante. S. Audet, C. ones. G. Priest Boys Soccer 76 Flashback, A successful 1986 campaign under new head coach Joe Goral. Goral, a former Polish National player, replaced the injured Steven Page and brought a revived squad into Housatonic League play. The team, led by seniors Jeff Holden, Neil Connelly, and scoring sensation Sean Stowik, had ten victories during the regular season. They entered post season play with a victory over Johnathon Law, but were defeated by RHAM in the second round. With all but three starters returning, next year looks very promising and the team should contend for the Housy title in 1987. BOY'S SOCCER: Front Row: T. Redmond. N. ConnoHy. M. Backstrom. K. The girl's soccer team drove all the way to the third round in the Class M State Tournament, compiling a 15-2-2 record along the way. Led by Captains Jen Olayos and Karen Crebase and senior Kris Tremaglio, the team finished second in the Housy and fourth in Class M standings. There were many standouts on the young team including All State honors to Marcie Tremaglio. 1st team all housy awards went to Marcie Tremaglio, Lisa Smith, and Chris Frank. Shelly Catala, Paige Catala, Pam Crebase, and Kathy Pello made the second team. The girls did the best they had done in years, finishing with three wins and a tie. Some of their troubles were due to inexperience and a small team. The team was young, led by the only senior, Captain Terry Canestri, and junior Amy Vaillancourt. Well known tor their enthusiasm, the girls had a determined spirit which never wavered, even when facing defeat. All but one player will be returning, which should give the team a competitive edge for the ‘87 season. FRONT ROW: K. Houle. K. Austin. T. Fontaine. D. Tubiak. T. Canestri. A. Vaillancourt, L. Klein. Girl's Swimming The girl’s swim team was extremely talented, but the individual efforts were not enough to defeat the tough teams of the Housatonic League. Julie Bennet broke the record in the 200 yard relay and the 100 yard backstroke. Unfortunately, the lack of girls out for the team really hurt their overall record. Led by captain Nancy Kaptinski, seven out of thirteen girls competed at the state finals in the 400 yard freestyle relay. With many experienced girls returning, the Lyman Hall swimmers will surely be competitive next season. FIRS! ROW: Heidi Becker, fancy Kaptinski. Sandy Kovi. SECOND ROW: Sarah Tracey. Dawn Sardinas. The girls welcomed him as well as freshman sensation Jessica Kosco, who had a very successful season, finishing fourth overall in the Housatonic League, enough for first team all Mousy. Senior captain Shelly Dyer was sidelined for much of the season from injury, but she gave the young team leadership that they needed. Although achieving only one win, many of they meets were lost by only a couple of seconds. The key to many of these losses was the lack of participation. Depth was also the key for the boys Cross Country Team, who lost many of their meets in the same frustrating way. Senior captain Curt Combs led his squad through a rebuilding season one which may become competitive in the tough Housatonic League within the next couple of years. Front Row: G Me Morris. C. Combs. Led by captains Tina Asprelli, Holly Kingsland and Kris Carney, along with seniors Kelly Biggs and Joanna Lopez, the team was only able to come away with one victory for the departing Coach Boudreau. This record does not indicate the talent present on the team. With all but three starters returning next year, the young squad looks promising for the 1987 season. 86 Flashback: Making a habit of improvement each of the past two years, the hockey team once again increased their win total by two as they posted a decent 6-13 record. Behind the goaltending of junior John Jones and the scoring of Matt and David DeGennaro, Lyman Hall posted impressive wins over Sheehan, series sweeps of Watertown and Joel Barlow and their first win in eight years over a stubborn Cheshire team. The Blue Line totaled nearly 80 points while Popolizio, Kelly and Singer anchored the Red Line. Crosby, Schultz, DeBaise and McGucken were steady on defense in giving Jones decent protection. The boys finished with a 10-4 record, sending most of the team to the Housy and state tournaments. It was a happy ending for Coach Doolittle's coaching career at Lyman Hall. The entire team performed exceptionally well this season, breaking many school records and taking first places in most meets. The losses only resulted from a lack of depth. The squad was led by seniors Glenn Root and Chris Ciskowski, and underclassmen Dave Bennett, Pete Charbonneau, Dan Oleson, Adam Hartman, and Andy Benz. Flashback to February 24, 1987. The place, North Haven. Time remaining in the game, six seconds. The significance, determining who would be co-housatonic champs. The scene, mayhem. Watching his team's eighteen point lead dwindle to nothing, caused by an explosion of three point field goals by the Indians. Senior captain Boyd Johnson took the game into his own hands and appropriately sank the game winner. It capped off an extraordinary career and he leaves with various records including career high scorer. Joining Boyd is senior cocaptain and field general Tom Lipka, along with seniors Mark Kingsland and Brian Jameson, who was sidelined the latter part of the season due to injury. Fortunately, the support from underclassmen enabled the Trojan squad to place second in the Mousy. Starting with cheerleading camp during the summer, the squad strengthened and built their old techniques and learned new ones. The camp proved to be successful as the cheerleader's style was made sharper and more crowd oriented. To complete this image, the squad dressed themselves in a new white sweat outfit. In charge of this improved squad was head captain Sheri Gawlak along with co-captains Heather Parisi and Christen Rainey. Sotdjn Mrs. Henrietta Fried-Stoi man Mr. John Kowatski For the past twenty years, Mr. Frank Soidan has touched the lives of the Wallingford community as a principal, an assistant superintendent, and as superintendent. Mr. Soidan's dedication and devotion to the school system has been a catalyst in bettering the education of the Wallingford community. While in the Wallingford system, Mr. Soidan has been instrumental in implementing school reorganization; compensatory education programs for the disadvantaged; programs and classes for the social, emotional, and learning disabled students; reading teachers for the elementary schools; a school utilization study; early childhood programs for preschool speech and the physically handicapped; program development for the Wallingford public school television station; school beautification; equal opportunities for girl's athletics; and introduction and expansion of computer technology for instructional and administrative practices. Mr. Soidan feels that after 35 years as an educator, it is simply time to do other things. He plans to spend more time with his family and to travel throughout the United States, Mexico, Greece, the Near East and Europe. Mr. Soidan and his wife plan to continue living in Wallingford and to enjoy the company of friends and family. The Class of 1987 wishes Mr. Soidan a long and happy retirement which he has earned for all of his dedication and loyalty to the Wallingford school system. Mrs. Henrietta Fried-Stolzman retired in June after twenty years of teaching mathematics at Lyman Hall. Mrs. Stolzman attended the University of Minnesota and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Connecticut. She earned her Master’s Degree at Central Connecticut State University- In addition to her teaching assignments, Mrs. Stolzman served as an advisor for AFS, the Future Teachers Club, the Tennis Club, and as an assistant to the Key Club. Her family hosted two foreign exchange students (from Ghana and Finland), and she also served as sophomore and junior class advisors. Mrs. Stolzman was instrumental in organizing a pilot program for teacher aids in the Wallingford School System. She was also active in many community service projects, tutoring, and homebound instruction. During her retirement, Mrs. Stolzman plans to spend more time with her husband Aaron, her sons Jordan and David, and her friends. She also plans to devote more time to other things, including gardening, tutoring, traveling, reading, playing tennis and bridge, and assisting her husband in his business. The staff and students of Lyman Hall will miss Mrs. Stolzman dearly, and we wish her well in her future endeavors. Mr. John Kowalski has been a valued member of the Lyman Hall faculty for 27 years. In addition to his career as a teacher of English he has been recognized by Who's Who in the East, International Who’s Who in Poetry, Dictionary of International Biography, Men of Achievement, The World Who's Who of Authors, and International Authors and Writers Who's Who for his poetry. The entire school community will miss his dedication and enthusiasm. We wish him well in his future endeavors and we thank him for his years of unselfish service. 122 SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE I salute the Class of 1987! Your outstanding achievements have been a continuing source of pride in our community. I firmly believe that the quality education you have received in Wallingford will enable you to take full advantage of tomorrow's opportunities and challenges. As you graduate, your future encompasses a larger society and you become ambassadors of your family, your school, and your community. I urge you to use your acquired talents to the utmost in shaping that future. I wish you well; your happiness and success will be my reward. Frank J. Soldan Superintendent Frtnk Sotdan Superintendent of Schools Vincent Inglese Assistant Superintendent Dr. Robert Nicoletti Alfred Cei Assistant Superintendent Superintendent of Buddings and Grounds Nelson Keri Business Manager Central Office Staff Ann Eckard Transportation 123 Dear Graduating Class of 1987, Thank you lor having shared these past four years with us at Lyman Hall High School. Few things in the life of a high school principal brings him greater satisfaction and pleasure than that of acknowledging the successes of his students and graduates. It is, therefore, with a warm feeling of friendship for you, and also pride in many substantial accomplishments, that I extend to you the congratulations of your high school. For some of you this will mean a job and the responsibilities of family living. For others, this will mean college and years of further study and preparation. Whatever course your future takes, it is my sincere hope that you will look back on your years at Lyman Hall High School as having prepared you to meet and deal with the challenges that life will present. May the future be yours. The best of luck and congratulations to the Class of 1987! Dale 8. Wilson Principal MR DALE A.
