Mr. John J. Price . . . but I have promises to keep And miles to go before I sleep. Might not the poet Frost have had in mind, when he wrote these lines, the young people who go forth each year from our schools? It seems likely that he knew too well the dedication with which our youth would have to face a challenging world, none the better for the progress which civilization has been constantly achieving. The schools of today have an arduous task in educating the populat e of tomorrow's world. They must equip their charges with a sense of moral value iu preparing them to meet the challenges which lie ahead They must try to instill in them such perennial virtues as honesty, loyalty to oneself and to others, respect for authority, and a genuine appreciation for our American way of life which hangs so precariously in the balance Moreover, they must infuse in them the power of discernment, that their free will might be directed toward the proper paths. Robert Frost might have foreseen the. almost insurmountable obstacles with which today’s youth would have to cope. . . I have promises to keep” might well be the words upon the lips of each graduate as he steps forward into an uncertain world. He might promise always to recall the many lessons he has been taught by his parents. It is they who have guided his right decisions up till now, and he will keep his promises in continuing to use sound judgement. He might also promise to use to the utmost the knowledge he has gleaned from his formal education. In his own way, he may put this knowledge to work in the effort to preserve civilization. “And I have miles to go before I sleep” he must remind himself. The road is long; it is dubious but the more miles he covers, the closer he is to his objectives in life. There must be no rest until he reaches this destination. The poet Frost has expounded great wisdom in these verses. He has marked off lor our young people the guideposts to a rich and full life. I A We, the students of Lyman High School, are pleased and honored to welcome Mr. John J. Price - our new principal. We have come to appreciate his fine leadership and his strong interest in all student activities.
