MV OBJECT IN LIVING IS TO UNITE MY AVOCATION AND MV VOCATION, AS MY TWO EVES MAKE ONE IN SIGHT. Robert Frost Departments Page 15 2 Sophomore Class — Page 37 My object in living is to unite My avocation anti my vocation As my two eyes make one in sight. We are the hope of the future. Life is our struggle, our search fur many things. Our educational experiences are blended with our interests until they form our life’s career. We, as the adults of tomorrow, make this our final goal to strive for the betterment of mankind. We have chosen to unify our high school years, as presented in our yearbook, with the poetry of Robert Frost. Believing it best expresses the goal we have set for ourselves, we associate our own ideals with his poetry. With great profoundness of thought and dignity of expression, Robert Frost imparts through his writing what we experience through our living. His beautifully simple poetry mirrors things familiar to us, because he shares many of the hopes and ideas of youth. We believe that the background of our high school years has helped us to more fully understand and appreciate the world of Robert Frost our world. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. John XIV: 12J3. Harold Kenyon, a teacher at the Lyman Hall High School for eighteen years, passed away December 23, 1961. A graduate of St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland, Mr. Kenyon attended the University of Maryland Medical School. After receiving a Master’s degree from New York University, Mr. Kenyon came to Wallingford in 1943 as a teacher of the biological sciences. A quiet, unassuming man, Mr. Kenyon was sincerely interested in the physical well-being and mental growth of his students. We, the students and teachers of Lyman Hall High School, have lost a good and valued friend. Mr. John J. Price . . . but I have promises to keep And miles to go before I sleep. Might not the poet Frost have had in mind, when he wrote these lines, the young people who go forth each year from our schools? It seems likely that he knew too well the dedication with which our youth would have to face a challenging world, none the better for the progress which civilization has been constantly achieving. The schools of today have an arduous task in educating the populat e of tomorrow's world. They must equip their charges with a sense of moral value iu preparing them to meet the challenges which lie ahead They must try to instill in them such perennial virtues as honesty, loyalty to oneself and to others, respect for authority, and a genuine appreciation for our American way of life which hangs so precariously in the balance Moreover, they must infuse in them the power of discernment, that their free will might be directed toward the proper paths. Robert Frost might have foreseen the. almost insurmountable obstacles with which today’s youth would have to cope. . . I have promises to keep” might well be the words upon the lips of each graduate as he steps forward into an uncertain world. He might promise always to recall the many lessons he has been taught by his parents. It is they who have guided his right decisions up till now, and he will keep his promises in continuing to use sound judgement. He might also promise to use to the utmost the knowledge he has gleaned from his formal education. In his own way, he may put this knowledge to work in the effort to preserve civilization. “And I have miles to go before I sleep” he must remind himself. The road is long; it is dubious but the more miles he covers, the closer he is to his objectives in life. There must be no rest until he reaches this destination. The poet Frost has expounded great wisdom in these verses. He has marked off lor our young people the guideposts to a rich and full life. I A We, the students of Lyman High School, are pleased and honored to welcome Mr. John J. Price - our new principal. We have come to appreciate his fine leadership and his strong interest in all student activities. Mr. Price received his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Mary's University and his Master of Education degree from Boston College. Presently, Mr. Price is a candidate for his Doctor of Philosophy degree at Fordham University. 11 Mr. Alex Carter, Director of Adult Education. Mr. Michael Carbone, Acting Assistant Principal. Richard Vitale, President STUDENT COUNCIL Fellow students: We certainly realize that as a result of three years of work and study in high school we have acquired a considerable degree of knowledge in all of its practical as well as academic aspects. We must also recognize the fact that knowledge alone is really of little consequence, and that without direction or purpose it is self-defeating. It is fortunate, therefore, that at Lyman Hall we have also derived a lesson in the application of knowledge. Simple and yet vital, this lesson began in the classroom, where we developed the capacity for self-analysis. Later, through extra-curricular activities as well as class work, we learned to recognize and to put into practice the important relationship between thought and action-responsibility, for only by accepting responsibility can ideas be successfully translated into deeds. In reviewing our entire school experiences then, have we not been provided with a remarkable formula for future success? Besides receiving a great fund of knowledge, we have also learned how to give it both direction and purpose; besides merely possessing a tool, we possess the ability to use it effectively. Equipped as we are, we have every reason to face the future with both confidence and hope. Serving as a strong tie between the students and the administration, the Student Council is the governing Sincerely, body of Lyman Hall High School. The Council, because RICHARD VITALE it is composed of representatives of the three classes, presents a panorama of student interests and opinions. Although the Council consists of a diversified section of students, they are united by a common goal — the betterment of Lyman Hall. Sow we depart. The time of discovery calls anew, and a boundless world aw'aits our quest. Wc stand alone in our search, yet together in our memories. Memories of days of learning and activity, of ideas and plans, of disappointments and exaltations. Thus have we shaped and molded. Now w'e turn to the years ahead — some fearftd, some sure, all eager. Our vision is pure; our promise, hope. Let us not hesitate. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Lorraine Morneau, Secretary: Richard Larese, President; Susan Karolshak, Treasurer: Stanley Orze-chowski, Vice-President. 121 Lorraine CLASS HISTORY A POEM BEGINS IN MIGHT AND ENDS IN WISDOM The first stanza . . . the joy of anticipation . . . the joy of adventure . . . the delight of venturing into the unknown. In the fall of 1959, we began a new experience. With delight we accepted more adult responsibilities: challenging assignments, careful planning of time, extensive concentration, the initiating of class activities, and the piomoting of individual, class, and school welfare. Assuming positions of responsibility in the class were Dick Larcse, president; Ed Gerosa, vice president; Karen Popovich, secretary; and Sue Karolshak, treasurer. Representing our class in the student council were: Kay Goodrich, Pilar Esteban, Lotte Jensen, Susan Karolshak, Charlotte Kingsland, Dick Larese, Stan Orzechowski, Bob Gilpatrick, Ricki Vitale, and Bill Ingraham. Lorraine Morneau was chairman of our ring committee which was composed of Beth Eylward, Joan Gendron, Pat Tombari, Jane Wilhousky, Joan Corcoran, Karen Popovich, James Lynch, Arthur Rocque, Michael Lane, and Richard Booth. While learning to aid in the governing of ourselves, our class, and our school, we gained increasing knowledge of ourselves and our companions. We recognized true leaders in Ricki Vitale and Joan Corcoran and enthusiastically chose them as co-chairmen of our Sophomore Dance. The artistic talent of Gail Carmody led the decoration committee in vividly depicting the theme, “Sea Mist.’ Soon after final exams our first year in senior high school came to a close — a year of challenging experiences combined with an increasing awareness of ourselves as individuals and as contributing members of our class and our school. The second stanza . . . renewed feeling of anticipation, of learning and of experiencing anew. As upperclassmen, we returned the following September with hope mingled with uncertainty. To lead us through this most important year, we elected Jimmy Lynch as president; Dick Larese, vice-president; Joan Corcoran, secretary; and Susan Karolshak, treasurer. Assisting them were the members of the Junior Representative Council: Bonnie Fernandez, Karen Grana, Peggy Powers, Jane Wilhousky, Sheila Cichocki, Charlotte Kingsland, Lois Alex, Pat Tombari, Diane Naimo, Ricki Vitale, James Lynch, Winfred Gilman, William Ingraham, Arthur Rocque, Stan Orzechowski, Richard Buongirno, Charles Gay, Toni Dorsey, and Howard Stevens. Also, chosen to represent us on the Student Council were Joan Corcoran, Pilar Esteban, Susan Karolshak, Jean Lanzoni, Karen Popovich, Asia Rial, Richard Buongirno, Frank Cassello, Toni Dorsey, Paul Geremia, Ed Gcrosa, Joe Kovacs, Mike Reardon, and Ricki Vitale. One of the first decisions of the year was the selection of our class colors, blue and white; class flower, the carnation; and class motto, “It matters not how long we live, but how.” In November we joined with the sophomore and senior classes in bidding farewell to a dedicated administrator and a good friend, our principal, Mr. Langdon D. Fernald. His position was then ably filled by Mr. George Stevens, a man who also endeared himself to our class. It was also in November that our class staged its first theatrical production, “House on a ClifF,” under the direction of Miss Joan Dubiel and student chairman, Pilar Esteban. In the cast were, Claudia Budrow, Paula Zeil, Asia Rial, Beverly Caruso, Charles Gay and John Strout. Soon after the Christmas holidays, we began planning for the big event of our junior year, the Junior Prom, which was entitled “Aloha.” Lorraine Morneau was chosen as general chairman of the event and was ably assisted by Gail Carmody, Barbara Kovach, Joan Corcoran, Karen Popovich, and Richard Larcsc. This event climaxed our junior year in high school — a year that saw us become more mature and better able to understand ourselves and the challenges that lay ahead. The third stanza culminates the pocin. The delight is still present. Yet there comes now a growing realization of the meaning of the entire poem. In the fall of 1961, our class returned to Lyman Hall for the final time, bringing with us a greater knowledge of ourselves and the world which we would soon face. Upon our return we were greeted by Mr. John Price, our new principal. Mr. Price succeeded Mr. Stevens who accepted a position in Germany. After adjusting to the routine of school life, we elected the following to class officers to guide us through this momentous year: Dick Larese as president; Stan Orzcchowski, vice-president; Lorraine Morneau, secretary, and Sue Karolshak, treasurer. Our final year in high school presented many challenges and opportunities. We elected Asia Rial, Joan Corcoran, Karen Popovich, Lorraine Morneau. Jane Wilhousky, Charlotte Kingsland, Kay Goodrich, Richard Vitale, Joe Kovacs, Ed Gerosa, Richard Buongirno, Bill Ingraham, Stan Orzechowski and Bill Hampp to represent us on the Student Council. Chosen as officers of this body were Ricky Vitale, president: Joe Kovacs, vice-president; Karen Popovich, secretary, and Asia Rial, recording secretary. Joe Kovacs was, however, absent for most of the first semester due to a football injury sustained early in the year. Jim Lynch and Larry Sage were co-captains of the football team and Ronnie Pietruski was captain of our basketball team. Both teams consisted of many senior boys who went out to fight for Lyman Hall. Senior girls on the cheerleading squad under the direction of captain Carol Schweigert were Joan Corcoran, Jean Lanzoni, Betty Jane Gcrace, and Karen Popovich. Starting early in the fall but lasting through the year, the Signer staff under Elizabeth Chamberlain's guiding hand, planned toward the completion of the Signer of 1962. In November we held our Senior Prom, which was entitled “Evening In Venice” Charlotte Kingsland, general chairman, coordinated the activities of the various committees headed by Gail Carmody; Lois Alex, Judy Lchrinaii, and Lee Elder. Life, however, was not all one gay social event. A great part of the year saw us applying to colleges and universities and anticipating the December and January College Boards. The seriousness of our decisions was becoming increasingly apparent. We found ourselves anticipating the last day, graduation, with a mixture of emotions. As spring came, we delighted in our activities; and experiences assumed a bittersweet quality. We enjoyed ourselves and yet there was the realization that along with this honor and joy comes the farewells, the loss of friendly ties grown during the past three years, and the dispersement of our class. Then came the last class meeting, the election of Class Marshalls, the Class Night Banquet, and that final senior event, Graduation. The poem is completed. It has been read stanza by stanza, each new image engendering renewed delight and each new stanza adding further meaning to the entire poem. The result is a new interpretation of a phase of life, a new wisdom. Yet the poem is really not ended. With each new experience the meaning of the poem will grow and the wisdom gained will add color to otir every endeavor. i Fellow Classmates, Wc arc now entering the final days of our high school career. Upon our departure from Lyman Hall we shall be confronted with the challenge of a complicated world. As individuals we may face at some time economic insecurity, racial intolerance, or forms of dishonesty. As citizens we must work toward solving the problems of our nation as it attempts to perform its duties in the world community. The problems we have seen growing in the past few years arc still to be solved — the search for cures of fatal or crippling diseases, the increased world tension, the struggle of the U.N. to uphold its charter, the advance in the field of technology, the potential destruction of man by man. These challenges are very great, but I am confident that the class of 1962 can work towards solutions of these problems. Through the many activities that you, the members of the graduating class have initiated, the spirit that you have shown, and the many successes you have achieved, prove that you have the ability to cope with these problems. Along with this ability, you have received training, guidance, and skills through the efforts of the faculty and administrators to whom we express our cordial thanks Therefore, having gained in knowledge, experience and responsibility, and by utilizing your judgment and understanding, you shall surely be prepared to face the future and its challenges. I know that all of you will be successful in life and I do hope you will never forget your fellow classmates. I would like to say that you are the greatest group of “kids” I’ve ever known or want to know and I wish to thank you for your vast cooperation in class functions. May you have good luck in all of your future endeavors and may God bless all of you.
