Ernst II Mass Communication The first years of this decade had their triumphs and tragedies but probably the situation which most moved everyone was the tragic famine in Africa. In general, people will reach out to aid those in crisis situations, often through the work of governments or churches. The African famine brought together many stars of the music industry who put their talents and gifts together to benefit the hungry. Three major musical organiza- tions were formed for single performances — Band Aide in Europe, USA for Africa in the United States, and in Canada. Northern Lights. lust before Christmas, Band Aide released Do They Know It ' s Christ- mas which became an immediate hit. Several months later USA for Africa formed and recorded We Are the World which also topped the charts. Tears Are Not Enough was the contribution of Northern Lights.
