Each car as I look down on the sea of blue below me while the choir calls down a benediction on the new graduates and the caril- lon intones the Alma Mater one last time. I see a hushed and thoughtful audience. It is a poignant moment. So different from the joyous exuberance that crests through the class as the President confers the baccalaureate degree, or the noisy enthusiasm of the band and choir as they celebrate boisterous- 1 the achievements of one of their own. Commencements like weddings move us in conflicting ways. They both open doors to new independence and new opportunities and we all rejoice in that excitement. But as with so many other passages in life, we arrive at new destina- tions only by leaving something of ourselves behind. It is the knowledge that all joy comes with a price that leaves us so silent as commencement draws to a close. Joy and sadness blend permanently in this book. Shirley A. Van Marter Dean of the College B.A., Mundelein College; M.A., Northwestern University; M.A., Ph.D.. University of Chicago Jack C. Buckle Dean of Student Services A.B.. Juniata College; M.S., Syracuse University To the Class of 1984; Lycoming College has been an important part of my life for the past 27 years. Although you have been privileged to spend only four years of your life here at Lycoming, we shared the same time and place. As I have learned, you too have learned, and my hope for you is that you will continue to do so long after you have left Lycoming. Life is just beginning for you. College is never the end — it is just one of those new starts we all experience throughout life. Every year has represented a new beginning for me — and every year has been an opportunity to share in the growth of students. We may have had our disagreements; we may have shared pain and disappointment — but we have shared the good times and the laughter as well. As you grow in years and wisdom, you will remember the good times and forget the unhappy ones. You will forget much of the facts you learned in the classroom, but you w ill remem- ber those who taught you and with whom you worked. Your instructors will live in your memory — as will the friendships ou formed among your peers. For many of you. those friend- ships will last forever — and they will be the tie that binds you to Lycoming. For the 23 years before you came to Lycoming. I have watched as those who preceded you gave Lycoming their support in order to contribute to your future. A college is nothing more than the people who love it and cherish it. Whether you like it or not, you are now a part of our history — and our future at the same time. Let us continue to share our common experience with each other. 21 William L. When President Blumer is not hard at work behind his desk, you just might see him reading the Christmas story to the children at the annual All-College Christmas part) or attending many of the special affairs held in honor of the students and faculty, such as Honors Convocation. Dr. and Mrs. Blumer are involved in many of the college activities. They have been faculty associates for floors in Asbury Hall, and enjoy their contact with the students. They often have dinners at their home for student groups, and President Blumer meets regularly with students to get student input on the affairs of the college. President Blumer was class advisor for our junior and senior year. Although he feels that being class advisor was more of a social pleasure, we know that he has given us excellent guidance. President Blumer has been a guiding force for our class and for the college. He is dedicated to improving the college and the students. We are proud to dedicate this yearbook to Dr. Frederick E. Blumer. Thank you for being more than the president of the college. Thank you for being a friend. Senior Class Officers Over the past four years the class of 1984 has made its presence known. Freshman year its efforts were awarded quickly as it won the float competition at homecoming. Also Freshman year it held Slave Day and various other fund raisers. The next three years continued the fund raising activities, including Easter projects and concessions. All of these efforts were rewarded senior year with senior week activities and the annual party at the Caboose. Lamade Gymnasium in the Physical Education Recreation Center) 2:00 P.M. 146 147 The long awaited day of graduation was finally upon us as  c gathered in our gow ns for the Baccalaureate Service. It was a good start to a great day and the service ended with a beautiful slide show put together by Father T. There was only a short lunch break, and then we were once again gathering in our gowns to prepare for the graduation proces- sional. Wc grouped with friends to con- gratulate each other, reminisce and ... to say Good-bye! As the time to process grew nearer, we were all instructed and checl ed off by Dr. Falk and Dean Van Marter. When the pro- cessional began, we all reflected on our time at Lycoming, and moved on to start our own lives and live our dreams. 149 Above: Assistant Marshall, Dr. Franz, and Marshall, Dr. Falk. lead the processional onto the Quad. One picture gives you a total view of a bench on the Bell Court, and when you look at it you remember the times you walked by there and thought how beautiful it was. The other is a picture of the leaves, more detailed perhaps but not quite as inspiring. You will get the same feelings when you look at this book. At first, when you leaf through It, you will think that it is a beautiful book. But, as you slow down and take a more detailed look at it. you will begin to see the imperfections it may hold. This book almost ended before it began. The Administration did not see student support or interest in it and wanted to drop yearbook. A few students were instrumental in changing this decision and we began to try to prove that we wanted and could produce a good yearbook. We chose Warrior Pride as our theme because we felt that we had a lot to be proud of. and we wanted our book to show this. 1 am proud of this book, and I hope you can be proud of it too. Many people deserve a special Thank you! for their support and efforts to help improve and continue with this yearbook. Deanna Cappo. Linda Rcph. and Dean Caligiuri helped persuade the . dministration to keep the yearbook. Dean Buckle gave us all of the support and help we needed to help keep the book alive. Mr. Geoff Gordon, our financial adviser. Ms. Susan Beidler. our layout advisor, and Dr. Rife, our copy advisor, kept us all on the straight and narrow, and helped to improve the book. Lewisburg studio. Bob Bcchtold. and Deb DcFazio look excellent pictures for us and that helped to improve the quality of what you sec. Curt Zemcncik and his staff did a wonderful job on the senior section. Ann Shields helped tremendously with the opening section and the group pictures. Tina Muheim did an excellent job with the sports section. • :.... Connie Werts kept the money flowing in with help from Steve Di Marco and Joe Sullivan. Dann Caldwell, Barb Dodd. Leah Kuhn, Claire Hutch- ins and Donna Watson, did their part with the little jobs no one else wanted to do. Charlie Bollinger, our yearbook representative from Herff Jones was our greatest help. He showed us just what to do to make our book great. I would like to thank everyone for their support and encouragement. We did it for you. and wc hope you can show your Warrior Pride with this book. 192 9 I •v n WARRIOR PRIDE ODES NOT CIRCUUTE Lycoming College. The Arrow. pe ? NOT CIRCUIATI
