Dear Students: In the 17th Century when many European universities were being formed, formal gardens were very fashionable and many included extensive labyrinths. They were great for hide and seek. The passages of some were so intricate and complex that they couldn ' t be penetrated without a guide. The renaissance University came to regard itself as the Ariadne thread through the labyrinth of life. Sometimes, unfortunately, it was more like the labyrinth itself, little more than an academic obstacle course. But just as the labyrinth in an ancient garden was often a cipher to a broader design, so also a college curriculum leads somew here, often to the very heart of things. It is seldom easy to make one ' s way to the heart of anything. We shouldn ' t be surprised that our powers of concentration and memory are taxed; neither should we resent the challenge. ! hope your memory of Lycoming will be as stimulating as the trip through this academic maze. In other words, I hope you ' ve developed a taste for hard work and problem solving, for labyrinths and challenges. I also hope you won ' t feel compelled to explore the mazes ahead of you alone.
