Text from Pages 1 - 182 of the 1979 volume:

ARROW 1 979 Lycoming College Williamsport, Pennsylvania To sea — new faces sail . What shall their years prove? Some learn their lessons well And soar to the stars. Others shall fail . . . and return Unchanged. What of friends, of hearts they touch? They are the only mercy in the icy voyage. To have gone untouched is to have gone Nowhere. What memories has the journey given them? Love, pain, hate, and joy — What do they know of these? Those who have never known the feelings of man Have known nothing. With a mind made wise, a heart made glad, And a memory made rich, the survivors Sail on . . . — J.F.E.II Look back between the lines for spots of time — the stilled moments of holidays and yesterdays and dreams. Before and after photographs show how to pass from reaching to believing; linking experience to knowledge. The lines are our way of framing the high times. So look back between the lines for those that can be called my times. Look back between the lines. Table of Contents Opening 4 Dedication 8 Administration 10 Faculty 18 Organizations 30 Sports 60 Seniors 92 Activities (Student Life) 1 24 Finances 1 56 Hit the books, hit hard, break the machine, beat the system, pound the clay, question and re-question, search and re-search — all become an endless stream of motion and emotion. Both alone and conspiring, we rise from freshman to senior, each on our own journey, hoping that somebody out there is on our side. And in between, we try to one-up the profs while they try to one-up us. The times of being alone and the times of being together center on the photographs, the Close Encoun- ters and the Close-Ups. Photographs stilled moments — freeze the dream, slow the cease- less motion, and show how we stepped from reaching to believing. Some are ready to move on, some are scared, others are looking toward the pleasures or challenges still to be offered here. Now, we have one last buffer before entering the real world. So before we end and then begin again, the Arrow is a way to find a few more times to say we ' ve loved these days. We, the class of 1979, proudly dedicate ttiis edition of the ARROW to Mr. ED SILSBEE. In the execution of his duties as security offi- cer for the Burns Security System, Ed brings warmth, understanding, and a friendly, Hi, How ya ' doing? to the students of Lycoming College. As a native of the area, Ed recalls playing football on the field which is now the quad, the construction of many buildings presently on campus, and those who lived in the Angel Factory. Following a long career at Sears Roebuck (downtown Williamsport), Ed and his wife Bubbles toured the western part of the United States. In the late sixties, Ed joined the Burns guards and was assigned Lycoming College. He is equipped with many stories of the college in its earlier days and some of the more humor- ous things which have happened while in the service of Lycoming. This openness and free- ness of conversation are qualities that stu- dents have come to appreciate over the years. Ed is never too busy to have a chat. When informed that he had been chosen by the senior class for the dedication of this yearbook, Ed simply replied, It seems to me that with all those professors with all their degrees, that they would be more worthy than I. It ' s not the education that we are acknowl- edging, but the efforts of an individual who daily goes out of his way to be friendly. In many ways the guard job is like my personnel job for Sears, Ed commented. In business you have to treat a man with respect and trust until you are shown you must treat him differently — the same is true with the students. He said that the secret for getting along with the students well is, treating them as you would want to be treated. While this is a simple philosophy, it is an endearing one. As he makes his rounds, Ed tries to let the students be themselves while maintaining order and protecting the rights of others. It is for the dedication and friendliness of this man and for the addition he makes in our lives on this campus that we dedicate the 1 979 ARROW to our dear friend, Ed. ' ijrr .5S- if 1 . m p . . •««« ,. v - Lycoming College President — Dr. Frederick E. Blumer 12 LYCOMINO COLLEGE WILLIAMSPORT, PA I7y01 Dear Lycoming Students: As you read this book, perhaps decades after these pages were printed and these pictures were photographed, other images which have lain buried deep in your memories for years will come to life again. My guess is that you will laugh to your- self as you recall your days at Lycoming College. At least you will smile about the mixture of joy and disappointment in events which seemed so important then and so remote now. The human predicament hasn ' t really changed since your college years, not even since the stone age. We have always been impaled on the horns of a dilemma, haunted by our mortality on the one hand and attracted by an unknown and exciting future on the other. Laughter, soul deep laughter, is the most profound response humans ever make to this human predicament. Such laughter is the echo of prayer. We can be grateful that for us, you and I at least, this laughter resonates from our experiences here at Lycoming College, here in these pages. These have been very human days we ' ve had together. I hope they always bring new laughter into your life. Sincerely, Frederick E. Blumer President FEB:ph 1. President of the College — Frederick E. Blumer Secretary — Phyllis Holmes 2. One of the fundamental objectives of Sigma Pi is the development of character in each of its brothers and pledges. While the true essence of character is hard to define, we at Sigma Pi have tried to exemplify it by our standard of conduct, our acceptance of responsibilities, and our own self-image. The specific benefits a man sees in Sigma Pi vary from individual to individual. Here at Lycoming ' s Sigma Pi there is a chance for athletic participation, help with stud- ies, and opportunities to have some life long friends. These are just a few of the benefits Sigma Pi offers. This section is dedicated to the six seniors of Sigma PI: Gene Daly, Steve Gwiazdowski, Tim Kelly, Greg Lumpkin, Jay Rubino and John Jordan. Founded in 1955, the Epsilon Beta Chapter of Theta Chi has maintained its traditions and ideals. The Brothers are actively involved in both college and community functions. Each Homecoming the Brothers assist the Alumni Association with the Ox Roast. Although over-extended by work involved with the Ox Roast, the Brothers managed to sponsor an award-win- ning float this year. Added to this, the Brothers have helped the Catholic Council of Lycoming College in their benefit raffle and have also held an Easter party for underprivileged children. Theta Chi prides itself in its diverse membership — dif- ferent types of people striving to achieve qualities of leadership and maturity within the academic and social environment and thus upholding its motto: Alma Mater first, Theta Chi for Alma Mater. The weekend activities began at nine o ' clock, Saturday October 6, with the official Alumni registration in the Wertz Student Center. The weekend featured such events as a powderpuff football game in which the Skeath Hall Fire Plugs defeated the Skeath Hall Silverfish , an antique car show, an ox roast held by Theta Chi, a balloon rise sponsored by the Lambda Chi Crescents, and an exciting football game in which the Warriors handed Delaware Valley a 21-7 defeat. The only slow moments came while waiting in the cafeteria line. Candle-light and lace set the mood for the Parent-Faculty meeting Rob Wilson and his Mom catch up on past happenings. 133 Is there such a thing as E.S.P,? Do hyp- notic trances really occur? Students and faculty members of Lycoming College were invited to watch the Astonishing Neal per- form his feats of mind over matter. Audience participation was a major factor in the suc- cess of the evening. Students looked on as their fellow classmen responded to Neil ' s powers, and then drew their own conclusion as to the ability to control objects using just the powers of the mind. f 134 135 B 1 K J i B hu l r X-mas With I I L 111 Ik j HH| Santa Cj Hj and 1 ■ M I H More . . . And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, i But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam. When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, and after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. — Tennyson Pr- . .■■ ' ■ ' , hist.
