Dedication - -B We, the class of 1977, are proud to dedicate the Arrow to a woman who is quite familiar to all of us. This person sees the students at least two or three times a day. Whether we have had a rough day of classes, the football team wins or loses, she always has a kind, cheery word. She also has the undenia- ble talent for making you laugh, especially when you are determined not to. She can make even the worst of problems seem trivial just by listening or cracking a joke. We are truly amazed at how one person can spread love among so many people throughout each day. We d edicate the 1977 Arrow Yearbook to ALICE HELM, and we shall always treasure her friendship. The opening game confirmed that feeling but the next three disproved it. When all games were finally tolled Lycoming stood with a 3-8 season record, a disappointing season to say the least. But considering the competition and the customarily small Lycoming team the hooters did not fare too badly. With one senior, Captain Pat Cerillo, graduating this year and a returning team of approximately 15 lettermen, one can only hope that this year will be seen as a rebuilding one for a great team next year. Seven times squads have equaled the mark of most losses in a season with seven, one of those teams scoring just 13 points. This year ' s unit was no exception, for they set records as well. But this time around they read more like most victories in a season (8), most points scored (192), best percentage (.888) and most consecutive wins (7). In fact, the 1976 squad set or equaled 14 team or individual records with their 8-1 season, completing the reversal under head coach Frank Girardi, who inherited a losing program when he took over five years ago. Lycoming ' s only loss came at the hands of Albright College in the second game of the year, 20-14. The Warriors had taken a 14-0 lead at one time during the contest and played a superb defensive game, but the Lions were able to pull off the big plays and rally for the win which cost the Warriors a shot at the NCAA Division III national title. But in the words of Coach Girardi, it was an extremely satisfying season. The nationally ranked defense played well throughout, coming up with the big play game after game. Names like Weigle, Prowant, Butler, Fedore, Kindler, Parsons and Tkach became commonplace over the College Field public address system. And on offense, sophomore tailback Kevin McVey proved to be the surprise of the year. Not even considered a starter at summer practice sessions, McVey became the workhorse during the season, establishing three individual records and equaling another. Nicknamed the Flea for the way he moved through oppo- nent defenses, McVey rushed 219 times for 833 yards and seven touchdowns, carrying 39 times in one game alone. Sophomore Frank Morogiello and senior John Johnson shared the quarterbacking duties this year, while senior Clark Gaughan teamed with McVey in the backfield. With 14 records to be entered, it no doubt will take some time until this second consecutive winning season is logged safely in the books. Field Hockey FRONT ROW: N. Schadler. Winther. D. This evened out their overall record to 4-4-0, which is identical to last year ' s record. The team was also entered in a MAC tournament at Franklin and Marshall. Coach Ginny Kieser loses three good players to graduation this year. They are Co-Captains Janet Babcock and Ann Johnson, and Beth Cogley. But there are thirteen returning lettermen on the team who hope to provide a winning com- bination on the Tield next year. «i % N:i . mkL ' The Sauce He -j .--. ' • v. afcer-f ' .j) Sticks Down! Their work was cut out for the matmen, though, with powerhouse teams such as Princeton, Navy, N.C. State, Bucknell and Uni- versity of Pitt on the schedule. The team completed their season with a final record of 13-7; four of the losses were by a mere four points or less. Coaches Budd Whitehill and Doug Keiper will be losing six starters to graduation. However, the coaches ex- pect a strong season next year from the talented underclassmen who ' ve been with the team this year. Basketball TOP, COUNTERCLOCKWISE: J. Billman, B. Conroy, R. Graff, T. Steve Andrews, Photograph Meetings in the Publications Room . . . loud discussions ... the hours and hours of work both day and night ... the incessant noise of a typewriter . . . photographs selected and rejected, cropped and recropped . . . Until January it was our book, now it is yours. For each person, ARROW 1977 is meant to tell a story — an interpretation of this year at LYCOMING COLLEGE. I am most thankful for an energetic and generally concerned staff which helped to compile this book. In particular, my personal thanks and gratitude go to: MRS. BETTY KING, our Business Advisor, who carefully watched over our funds, and who did so many uncountable things. MISS PATRICIA STALGAITIS, our Editorial Advisor, who never ran out of patience, stories and encouragement and who was always there to help. MR. ANDY FEDORE, who designed our Arrow symbol on the cover of the book. MISS JENNIFER HOLE, our artist, who using her imagination and skill created our divider pages. MR. JIM ANDERMAN, our Business Manager, who somehow kept all of the books in order. MR. STEVE ANDREWS, one of our student photographers, who spent much time in making this book memorable. THE SPECTATORITES, who graciously let the ARROWITES inhabit the Publications room. MISS LAURA COGHLAN and MISS LINDA YOXTHEIMER, my Assistant Editors, who worked all hours of the day and night, fitting pictures, copy and the theme together like a jigsaw puzzle. Cog and Yox, always dependable and loyal . . . were most of all — Friends. HERB, PHYLLIS, MIKE AND RON, of Kocher Photo Service, a special word of thanks for all of your time spent on Senior Pictures, developing, etc ... etc .. . 1976-1977 was a good year. The physical moments are gone, but the memories are alive within the covers of this book. You need only to flip through the pages to see a familiar face ... a dance that was great . . . a club that motivated you ... a professor who challenged your thoughts. In this sense this particular year is gone and the doors have at last closed on the Class of 1977; but the same enthusiasm will soon be here again for football games, the impossible term papers, and the ARROW 1978. This is youthful enthusiasm. It goes on . . . and on . . . and on . . . Debbie J. Hoffman Editor-in-Chief Arrow 1977 Take lime and spend it with your friends ' ■■■■r. m ' r-.i rymm... Kist.
