THE PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE Members of the Class of 1969: The final year of your Lycoming educational experience will remain fixed in your memories for life. Set in the framework of the unpopular Viet Nam War, events were de- bated and studied by interested student and faculty groups. Disagreements on Lycoming policies and traditions were aired and major changes resulted. I am proud of the campus leadership your class exhibited throughout the year, evidenced by the general good con- duct of the student body. Specifically, we had speak outs and speak ins rather than sit ins or break ins as were common on other campuses in the world. This stands on the record as a great achievement in modern community living, and my hat is off to you and your elected leaders for your accomplishments. Lycoming College has a lot going for it, and it will be a center of teaching and learn- ing for many generations to come. Its relationships with the church and community will naturally change, but its Christian principles will continue to evoke the best in human en- deavors to eliminate injustices, to care for the less fortunate, to promote peace and brotherly love among all men and to teach all men the great value of service to others. May God bless all of you as you take your places in a society which desperately needs you and your thousands of fellow-graduates of the Class of 1969. I can assure you that your ideals and ideas for the improvement of this old world will prevail if you have the energy and perseverance to accomplish the changes within the framework of our great people ' s democracy. John G. Detwiler Acting President of the College

THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINOTOX TO THE 1969 GRADUATING CLASS LYCOMING COLLEGE Each generation, shaped by forces outside and within it, asks the question it must ask. Some generations, concerned with the building of a nation, ask How? Other generations, needing to set priorities for the future, ask What? Your generation has asked Why? As Americans we must together ask all of the big questions and seek to find answers . How we build a better America, what kind of nation we want, why we pursue certain goals instead of others -- these are not problems to be faced by one generation and ignored by another. lll of us must face them. A college education in the humanities and sciences teaches us that the real power to deal with these problems comes out of the human mind and the human heart. All power must be disciplined by trained intelligence and tempered by compassion. Each of you is a center of power. Your professional or social or religious or political activity will determine the shape of the future of your nation and of the world. The question asked by your generation -- Why? -- is one that must be ansv ered not only by the quality of your rhetoric but by the quality of your lives . It was in your college years that we were first made aware of those people talking without speaking, people hearing without listening. ' . at you have brought and will continue to bring to -imerican life is not the sound of silence, but the sound of a generation which will work to ensure that, in the words of V illiara Faulkner, ...man will not merely endure: he will prevail.
