Churchill The four years you spend at college are only the end of the beginning. The end of a special type of life filled with classroom discussions, sports, dances, coffee breaks and a chance to gain personal introspection and maturity. We have tried, in the following pages, to preserve the important aspects of your college experiences from the past year. We hope you enjoy in this yearbook, not only today, but later, when you have almost forgotten what the beginning was like. CONTENTS SENIORS 13 FACULTY and ADMINISTRATION ... 45 CLUBS and ORGANIZATIONS 75 SPORTS Ill ACTIVITIES 131 ADVERTISEMENTS 153 10 DEDICATION Known to his students as Happy Jack , Professor John G. Hollenback has been through the years ; a good friend, teacher and advisor to his students. It is with gratitude and deep respect that we, the class of 1967, dedicate our yearbook in his honor. THE PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE To the Class of 1967: What a change has come over you in four years! It does not seem so long ago that you came to the campus of Lycoming College. You were shy and confident. You were humble and proud. You were frightened and carefree. You were a strange mixture of motions, ready to be shaped and molded by the destinies of a liberal arts education. And now four years have passed and you are about to leave the campus. There are not so many of you as when you came. But you who remain are wiser than when you came. It is not as though you were shaped and molded at all, but rather that you have grown and matured. You leave the College with our stamp of approval. We are proud of what you have become, but we are prouder still of the potential you represent for tomorrow. We would not believe that your education is completed. We would rather believe that it is just beginning. The liberally educated man is one who has known the experience of coming to terms with, and accepting responsibility for, oneself and one ' s world. We bid you farewell with our best wishes for an ever expanding experience of education. Very sincerely, D. FREDERICK WERTZ President 12 SENIORS CHIEFTAIN AWARD WALTER G. EDMONDS A great honor which is bestowed on one of the Members of the senior class is that of CHIEFTAIN. This award is given to the senior who, in the opinion of the students and faculty, has contributed most to Lycoming College in leadership, outstanding ability, personality and a high moral code. This year we are proud to announce that the honor of CHIEFTAIN 1967 is bestowed upon WALTER G. Top row: Zierden, Johnson, Townsend, Caudy, Reinhardt, Kerr, Samka, Yarnall. Under Dave Busey, retiring head football coach, the team turned in an even 4-4 season. After a squeaker against Delaware Valley which saw Lyco come out on top 21-20, the Warriors dropped two in a row to Grove City and Albright. Next Lyco came back by beating Western Maryland 27-14. Upsala and Juniata proved they had too much depth to compete with the Warriors and both squads handed us losses. The season ended on a good note with two impres- sive wins over Franklin and Marshall and Muhlenberg. Seniors Bepler, Jones, Koval, Krauss, Meyers, Miller, Stetson and Tischler will be missed next season when the team returns with Budd Whitehill as head coach. With injuries to key players Moravian 3 Walt Kinsey and Detlev Tauber, the team lost Upsala 3 its scoring punch early in the season. A good Wilkes 5 nucleus of freshmen and sophomores should Washington 6 move Lyco back into the MAC race and improve Lock Haven 4 upon this years 2-8-1 record. Western Maryland 2 Through graduation Coach Phillips will lose Susquehanna 2 Whitney, Tauber, Kinsey. MacCurdy, and Short Drew 3 who have put in four tough years of soccer and Elizabethtown 9 will certainly be missed. The cagers accompHshed this by scoring just under 100 points per game and holding their opponents to just over 85 points per game. This season saw Coach Burch lose two highscoring seniors ; Ron Travis and Dick O ' Donnell. Travis completed his eligibility first semester and became the second all-time leading scorer in Lyco history. He was selected to the All- East ECAC team. O ' Donnell also entered the high-scoring ranks by placing fifth on the all-time scoring lists. The team will also lose another valuable player, senior co-captain Bob Barnhill but Lyco can look for a good season next year with five returning lettermen. 121 Lycoming 113 Lycoming 93 Lycoming 78 Lycoming 90 Lycoming 98 Lycoming 103 Lycoming 72 Lycoming 90 Lycoming 92 Lycoming 87 Lycoming 125 Lycoming 121 Lycoming 118 Lycoming 80 Lycoming 100 Lycoming 98 Lycoming 79 Lycoming 117 Lycoming 95 Lycoming 86 Bowie 85 Lebannon Valley 68 Wilkes 75 Susquehanna 85 Elizabethtown 95 Juniata 85 Albright 87 Scranton 103 Upsala 74 Wagner 97 Muhlenberg 101 Millersville 143 Lincoln 96 Washington 62 Wilkes 77 Dickinson 80 Elizabethtown 71 Western Maryland 102 Delaware Valley 87 Drew 65 122 123 WRESTLING Front roiv: D. The Whitehill grapplers compiled a 6-5 record in dual meet competition this year. Considering the relative inexperience of the team and the addition of wrestling powers Lock Haven, Springfield, and East Stroudsburg, the matmen were against for- midable odds. The loss of Captain Rod Mitchell will certainly be noticed next year but the team can look forward to better seasons. The highlight of the season was the excellent showing of freshman Dave Johnson who was 140 lbs. in the dual meets and won the 152 lb. title in MAC competition. 124 Lycoming 17 Lycoming 19 Lycoming 8 Lycoming 29 Lycoming 31 Lycoming 9 Lycoming 14 Lycoming 32 Lycoming 23 Lycoming 9 Lycoming 20 Delaware University 14 Springfield 18 Lock Haven 23 Juniata 6 Hartwick East Stroudsburg 24 Waynesburg 19 R. Johnson extended his undefeated string to 14-0 in capturing the gold medal in the 152 lbs. class. The only other Warrior grappler to make it to the finals was Rodney Mitchell, the defending MAC 137 lbs. champ, who, wrestling at 145 lbs. did capture second place. Lycoming was the only school to receive scores in all of the weight classes. The 1967-68 season should be even brighter, as Coach Whitehill loses only one of his starting team, Rod Mitchell. Meyers. Once again depth was the downfall of this year ' s swimming team. Coach Mort Rauff had a fine nucleus this year with Senior Captain Paul Pitkin, Chuck Wells, Steve Smith, Joe Stuck, Sandy Raymond, and Tim Kremzies turning in some of the fine perfor- mances for the team in this season ' s 6-5 log. With almost a full squad of veterans returning next year, the mermen are almost assured of bettering this year ' s record in dual meets and MAC competition. 128 — — .J MAC Mort Rauff ' s mermen found it rough treading this year in the MAC competition held at Johns Hopkins. After placing third last year, the Warriors had hopes of a repeat performance but found the competition stiff. Due to a poor start the team found it difficult in gaining points and had to settle for ninth place. 129 Lycoming. . . .44 Lycoming. . ..41 Lycoming. . ..58 Lycoming. . . .42 Lycoming. . ..30 Lycoming. . ..61 Lycoming. . ..64 Lycoming. . ..43 Lycoming. . ..43 Lycoming. . . .56 Franklin Marshall . . .51 American Univ 51 Morgan State 35 Howard Univ 62 Dickinson 65 Wilkes 34 Elizabethtown 31 Lock Haven 52 Bloomsburg 38 Gettysburg 39 130 ACT I VI - I ■■ma i ■K=:„- m 1 If Ml ■1 L !
