[( }-4 H i hH H ac X) IN APPRECIATION Standing at the threshold ol: a new hfe, the Class of 1959 pauses to pay tribute to one who has helped make this day possible. Guiding our steps as we traveled the path in search of our various degrees, you have more than once prevented us from slipping over the precipice marked de- feat. Yet, as you lent the assist, it was done so unobtrusively that the ensuing decision we made seemed to be our own. Through vour classes, you have shared a vast storehouse of practical experiences which will minimize for us the likelihood of tragic and costly mistakes. Your readv smile, your cheery greetings, your effervescent per- sonality invited everyone to come and share his problems with you. Our problems became ' our problems. Yet, they seemed to melt into nothing- ness when we discussed them with you. ' herever we go, whate ' er we do, your influence upon our lives will be felt. We, the Class of 1959, take pleasure in dedicating the 1959 Arrow to you, G. Heil Gramlev. May it always remind you of our affection for one who constantly shows his genuine concern for the welfare of the students of Lycoming College. 48188

m f B «) FB $ H- ]- H S h -D- SIGNS OF EDUCATION OUTLIVE THE MAN T HE Indians have long since ' anished from our scene, hereabouts, - - but their effect upon the area will be felt for ages. Names like Lycoming, Loyalsock, Nescopeck, Chillicothe, Tiadaghton and Sus- quehanna remain to tantalize the student in spelling and to challenge the lover of history and lanaua e. Although the Indians are no longer a common sight, their legends and script remain as landmarks in the community. During your four years at Lycoming, you have been introduced to these legends many times. The Indian tales themselves have been part of our tradition, even though the script has tended to be forgotten; and an understand- ins of their symbols has become a lost art. Because this art should not be lost, we have incorporated in this book some of the symbols that should have meaning for you. Look at them, study them and then endeavor to discover the hidden words therein. Briefly, the Chieftain is an Eagle— the Indian Chief always used Eagle feathers in his headdress. Iruska is The Butterfly chasing the Frog, for the Indians symbolized a talent to do for others by a frog and butterfly. Classes is marked by a Person in Thought— What else should a college student be? Person Standing in Camp Circle illustrates the Administration who stand apart yet are the focal point of our existence. Organizations are characterized by the symbol— House With Life and Prosperity of which we all are a part. Sun Rays on the Body aptly designates the Sports section, while The Heart of a Person indicates Activities— the pulse of campus life. The hidden meaning in these symbols should encourage us to go forth and make our mark in life, so that years after we are gone, we may be remembered not only for our worldly accomplishments, but for the psychological effect we have on our descendants. Just as they did for the Indians before us, the signs of education outli ' e the man.
