Guiding our steps as we traveled the path in search of our various degrees, you have more than once prevented us from slipping over the precipice marked de- feat. Yet, as you lent the assist, it was done so unobtrusively that the ensuing decision we made seemed to be our own. Through vour classes, you have shared a vast storehouse of practical experiences which will minimize for us the likelihood of tragic and costly mistakes. Your readv smile, your cheery greetings, your effervescent per- sonality invited everyone to come and share his problems with you. Our problems became ' our problems. Yet, they seemed to melt into nothing- ness when we discussed them with you. ' herever we go, whate ' er we do, your influence upon our lives will be felt. We, the Class of 1959, take pleasure in dedicating the 1959 Arrow to you, G. Heil Gramlev. May it always remind you of our affection for one who constantly shows his genuine concern for the welfare of the students of Lycoming College. 48188 m f B «) FB $ H- ]- H S h -D- SIGNS OF EDUCATION OUTLIVE THE MAN T HE Indians have long since ' anished from our scene, hereabouts, - - but their effect upon the area will be felt for ages. Names like Lycoming, Loyalsock, Nescopeck, Chillicothe, Tiadaghton and Sus- quehanna remain to tantalize the student in spelling and to challenge the lover of history and lanaua e. Although the Indians are no longer a common sight, their legends and script remain as landmarks in the community. During your four years at Lycoming, you have been introduced to these legends many times. The Indian tales themselves have been part of our tradition, even though the script has tended to be forgotten; and an understand- ins of their symbols has become a lost art. Because this art should not be lost, we have incorporated in this book some of the symbols that should have meaning for you. Look at them, study them and then endeavor to discover the hidden words therein. Briefly, the Chieftain is an Eagle— the Indian Chief always used Eagle feathers in his headdress. Iruska is The Butterfly chasing the Frog, for the Indians symbolized a talent to do for others by a frog and butterfly. Classes is marked by a Person in Thought— What else should a college student be? Person Standing in Camp Circle illustrates the Administration who stand apart yet are the focal point of our existence. Organizations are characterized by the symbol— House With Life and Prosperity of which we all are a part. Sun Rays on the Body aptly designates the Sports section, while The Heart of a Person indicates Activities— the pulse of campus life. The hidden meaning in these symbols should encourage us to go forth and make our mark in life, so that years after we are gone, we may be remembered not only for our worldly accomplishments, but for the psychological effect we have on our descendants. Just as they did for the Indians before us, the signs of education outli ' e the man. )i -4- HH |h  to X) Cocixrcoro page 8 Ccc ooeo CHIEFTAIN AWARD Clifford Smith The highest non-academic honor which can be bestowed upon a student at Lvcomino College is the Chieftain Award. The recipient of this award, a member of the Senior Class, is chosen bv both the faculty and students. The person selected must possess the qualities of marked leadership ability, high moral code, pleasing personality, good scholastic standing and the facility to be compatible with the administration and classmates alike. These attributes are to be combined with a great contribution to L coming through long and selfless effort towards the success of its acti ities. We salute this year ' s award vyinner as one possessed of all these qualities in the highest degree. He is truly all that a leader should be. Congratulations, Cliff. Thev are not unworthy of this honor. The juniors have sur i ' ed the rioors of three years of steadily increasing scholastic standards without faltering. They have ably served Lycoming in many capacities. The junior class is closest to the senior class in point of time, and it is with them that we share the most memories of our college career. The newness has worn ofF, and YOU are now fully initiated into that peculiar sort of life called collegiate. You haye filled your place in Lycoming ' s society well, and we are proud to own ' ou as friends and classmates. Soon YOU Yill become upperclassmen, joining the seniors as leaders of the school. We kno y ' 0u are well-equipped for this, and we heartiK ' wish YOU well, both in the next two years and in your li ' es after graduation. 45 1 fl m Wj ft . FRESHMAN You have now arrh ' ed at the close of your first year at Lycoming. You arrived here, the largest class yet to enter Lycoming, fresh from the fun and prestige of a high school senior year. You looked forward with anticipation and something akin to anxiety to your freshman year. You passed, with remarkable poise, through the weeks of initiation and completed the election of your class officers with an almost professional dispatch. We admire vour spirit and promise, and we believe that you will be, as a class, one of the brightest ornaments of Lvcoming ' s future. We shall not be here to see vou accomplish this, but we wish ou all the happiness that we have experienced in our li es at Lvcoming and all success in vour future beyond college. MEMBERS p. One of the most difficult jobs connected with anv college is that of publishing the campus news- paper. It is the responsibility of this organization to report news, but usually on a campus the news is already known by most of the students. There- Inre, the college newspaper must be more than news; it must pave the way for future events, create interest in activities and occasions, bring to light lit- tle known interests and subjects on the campus, and of course gi ' e news that is as fresh as possible. The Be this year has done an admirable job in all respects. It has acted as an important instrument of student opinion and helped to solidify student attitudes. The editors and staff of the paper are entitled to a vote of thanks for enlightening the students through the medium of the newspaper. 66 Seated— Carty, Glazier, Benwav, MiHtru. taiuiiu;j -] i)cUuvT, Clitfurti, Hone, Bouton, Lay. WBEL The school ' s own radio station is an outgrowth of a weekly radio program known as Campus Chatter, aired over WLYC. It was the feeling that this pro- gram was not adequate for the campus and thus was born WBEL. During the year, broadcasts were heard five nights each week from 6:00 P. M. until 1 :00 A. M. A arietv of programs was offered rang- ing from classical music to rock n roll; from campus to world news; from professor and administration interviews to variety shows. In other words, a com- plete schedule was offered. This vear the radio station was piped into Wesley Hall only, but plans show that eventually all dorms will have this worthwhile entertainment. 67 MUSICAL ORGANIZATIONS WALTER G. Mclver, howe ' er, when the choir m.ide their tour this year, they were without their long-time director. Mr. Mclver had been cited by the United States oovernment by beino asked to be a member of o - o a choir of twenty-three Westminister graduates who were in ited to go on a good-will singing tour of Africa under the direction of Dr. John Finley Williamson. The choir proudly relinquished their director for this international recognition. In the absence of Mr. Mcl er, the choir was under the direction of the well-known Dr. Gustav Leh- mann during the second semester. Through his efforts, the choir was able to take, as scheduled, their annual tour. The tour for the 1958-59 school year was into the Southland. Concerts were sung in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Washington, D. C. and Pennsylvania. In the District of Colum- bia, the choir sang in the Mount Vernon Place Methodist Church which is the largest Methodist Church in the District. The trip lasted tvveU ' e days and was the longest trip taken within the United States. The choir was kept busy during the year taking several side trips, singing in chapel each week, par- ticipating in esper services and special occasions, and enjoying interesting acti ities within the choir itself. That is a good description of the school ' s instrumental organization. During the vear, and especially during the football season, the Band pro cd t i be not only a musical organization which was constantly improying itself but also a group of musicians with an oyerabundancc of school spirit. The band not only played at games and cheered itself blue in the face but also performed on the field during half time. The musicians participated during the entire year at rallies, assemblies, and other special occasions. Under the capable direction of Mr. Kenneth Josephson (a cello- ist at heart), the Band grew and matured this year. An ever growing, ever improving organization with a bright future. This is our Band. 70 STUDENT GOVERNING BODIES Sfuted— Franke, Nicodemus, Bastian, Wall, Thomas. Standing— Martin, Jones, Neif, Johnston. Poe. Aucker, Maicr, McComas. STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION The organization known as the Student Council or Student Government can be compared to the low- er house of the two-house system of go ' ernment. This body represents all of the students of the col- lege making it a sounding board for student prob- lems and attitudes. The upper house of the college is the administration. Through the existence of the Student Go ernment, there is a place where both student, faculty, and administration can come to- gether and consolidate their differing ideas into a mutual understanding, thus helping to make the college run more smoothly with respect for all opinions. In addition to working with the administration, the Student Go ernment endea ors to enforce and govern the rules of the student body. The Council o encourages school spirit and sees that students are participating in the various functions of the college, many of which are sponsored and carried out by the Student Go ernment itself. As long as an organization of this t pe continues r o - t and is supported b - the students, the student body will ha e a loud and proper voice in governing and determining policies of the student body. The ap- preciation of the students is owed to their represen- tatives for greatly advancing the position of the student at L coming College. 71 St ' irt ' (i Faiis, Easnvood, Layton, Hammond. RELIGIOUS LIFE COUNCIL One of the main functions of the Religious Life Council is to arrange for chapel programs and chapel speakers. Through the untiring efforts of these people, the best possible speakers are obtained for the student bod ' . This year, such great men as Bishop Oxnam and Dr. Sockman of the Methodist Church, Dr. Muehl and Dr. Napier of Yale Llni- versitv, Representati ' e Judd of Minnesota, Dr. Gezork of Ando ' er Newton Theological School, and other equalK line speakers were offered in the chapel each Tuesday morning. Through these efforts, Lycoming College has achie ' ed one of the finest chapel programs in the country. The Council is also responsible for the religious life of the campus. One of the highlights of the ear is the annual Brotherhood Week program spon- sored by the Religious Life Council. Man ' thanks are appropriate for an excellent job done by this group composed of members of the student body, faculty, and administration. 72 MEN ' S DORM COUNCIL Front RoM ' — Peckham, Cwik, Wright. RICH HOUSE 75 The object of a college education is not onI ' the attainment of an academic education but also a development of talents and interests. The honorary fraternities recognize this dual purpose by setting both academic standards and interest standards for members. At Lycom- ing there are four such fraternities: a histor ' fraternity for those achieving outstanding averages and interest in history; a band sorority for abo ' e average participation by girls in a musical organization; a band fraternity for men with the same achievement; and a dramatics fraternity for those people with not only academic averages, but also unusual ability in some aspect of the theater. By induction into such an organization, the person is given the honor of joining with a national organization in recognition of his services. INTER- FRATERNITY COUNCIL The job ot coordinating the work of the fraternities on Campus is accomplished through the I. F. C. This council maintains the rules on rushing, coordinates the social events of the five fraternities, acts as interlocker between the fra- ternities and the administration, and irons out mutual fra- ternity problems. The Council consists of three representa- ti ' es from each of the national and local fraternities on campus. Although each is a member of a fraternity wherein his primary loyalty lies, when they meet as a unit, individual interests are dissolved into the common good. Fraternity life on campus is made more enjoyable through the work of the Intcr-Fraternitv Council. 78 Sc !te i-Hank Codd; George Golden, Treasurer; Jere Teitrick. ice-Presiileiit; J.imes lcCormick, Prcsiclent; Norm Meadow, Secretary. ALPHA GAMMA UPSILON NU CHAPTER Alpha Gamma LIpsilon National Fraternity was founded at Fort Wavne, Indiana, in 1922. Nu Chapter was chartered at Ly- coming College April 21, 1951, but was first organized in 1950 as Beta Kappa Upsilon, with the express purpose of becoming a chapter of AGU. Nu Chapter has the distinction of being the first Eastern Chapter of the primarily mid-western organization. The brothers of AGLI work together to produce men of high character and ability who hold aloft the ideals of brotherhood, democracy, and seryice to the collc ' C and the community. The man - and aried acti ities of Nu Chapter are climaxed each year by a Spring Formal Banquet and Ball. The brothers wish those yho are graduating from their chapter the same spirit of fellovyship throughout life as has been theirs during their undersraduate days. 79 PSI CHAPTER KAPPA DELTA RHO Whe n someone this year accused the members of KDR of being on the move, he wasn ' t kidding. Psi Chapter moved from its house on Bennett Street to a much more spacious residence on FrankHn Street in Fraternit Row. Witii increased facilities, KDR is looking forward to extended acti ' ities. I Iowe er, in the rush of moving, the brothers still found time to be well represented in all college organizations and to sponsor their share of social functions. When those brothers who are graduating return to the campus, they will see the Psi Chapter expanded and grown, but still with the fraternal fellowship of the days past. LAMBDA CHI ALPHA IOTA BETA CHAPTER The local Iota Beta Chapter is a member of the largest social fraternity. Lambda Chi has one hundred and fortv-eight chapters in the United States and Canada. It is the supreme goal of the fra- ternit to contribute to the attainment of truth, justice and the well- being of humanity in the largest measure possible. It is with this spirit that Iota Chapter conducts itself in the scholastic, athletic, and social activities of the campus, thus gaining last year the coveted President ' s Trophy. This ear the brothers won the beauty prize, that is, Claramae Cohick, Miss Lambda Chi Alpha, was chosen Homecoming Queen. The brothers wish the members of the Class of 1959 success in their chosen fields. Sioma Pi was oioanized in order to establish a brotherhood of and for the college; to advance the cause of education; to promote schol- ' arship and culture; to raise the standard of m iralit ' and develop tlic character of men; to encourage chi ah and to diffuse culture. Two of the highlights of the social year at Lycoming are spon- sored bv Sigma Pi, namely. The Crystal Ball at Christmas time, and The Orchid Ball. This ear, as usual, these e ' ents were delightfully successful due to the untiring efforts of the brothers. Miss Gerry Pratt has reiizned as Miss Sigma Pi for this year. During the year tlic brothers ha e [-ro ided outstanding leadership among the campus organizations. 82 EPSILON BETA CHAPTER THETA CHI In 1955, the Epsilon Beta Chapter of Theta Chi was established at Lycoming College. With this establishment, the Chapter occu- pied a unique position among the campus fraternities, being the youngest campus fraternity but ha ing the oldest national organiza- tion. Theta Chi has endeared itself to the campus through its active participation and interest in the college, its kick-oflF dance in the Fall, its serenadino, and its sending of carnations to the women students on their birthdavs. This fraternitv could be called the watch-dog of the campus because of its high perch atop Bradlev Hall. HOMECOMING Homecoming Oueens With the arrival of brisk autumn weather, a spirit of anticipation was felt on our campus. This spirit heralded the approach of Homecoming week- end, the most important weekend of our school vear, and the one most carefullv prepared for. Long hours of work and planning were put into the exhibits of the se eral oroanizations and much time was spent in pep-meetings and football prac- tice in preparation for the big game. To Lycoming, from all parts of the country, came former students, many of whom remember a very different Lycom- ing. The - returned to renew old friendships and to share again in colleoe life. After the game, there was the alumni banquet and the dance, which brought the big weekend to a close; and the alumni, with feelings of pleasant nostalgia, left their Alma Mater for another year.
