Ivy-covered Old Main houses these departments, whose personnel efficiently expedite the many important, but frequently unseen, services that keep Lycoming College in operation. % u Administration To THE Class of 1956: You are members of the first class to be arad- uated under my presidency at Lycoming College. You will understand, therefore that the Class of 1956 will always hold a very special place in my affections. You are to be congratulated, of course, upon having completed your college career. This is a very significant milestone for each one of you. However, it is important for vou to realize that it is only a milestone. You have not reached the end of a journey. You are only a little further along the way. Lycoming College is proud to be able to grad- uate each one of you. This does not mean that we dismiss you with a diploma. It means rather that we share the joy of your achievement and look with considerable anticipation into vour future. The way in which you respond to the responsi- D. PRESIDENT FREDERICK WERTZ bilities of tomorrow will indicate the benefit you have derived from today. The Class of 1956 has been with the College during its formative years. You ha ' e felt some of our growing pains; sometimes you were our pains. But we ha ' e come through to the high moment of graduation. In this moment all the influences of your life converge. Here vou stand indebted to all who have gone before vou: parents, teachers, and friends. This is a very real debt though it cannot be determined in dollars and cents. You will pay it ofi as you prove yourself worthy of the sacrifices and services which they have provided for you. I wish you well! I am proud of vou! I want you to remain proud of vour Alma Mater. dent. 10 Board of Directors First Row, Left to Right— Long (Emeritus). Rich, Wil- son. Dorey was felt by the students, faculty, and administration. Mrs. Dorey was instructor in piano in the music department. Her husband, the late Mr. J. Milnor Dorey was also a member of the faculty as an assistant professor of English. We sincerely hope this yearbook will help to further the impressions she made and that this will continue to be part of life at Lycoming College through the years. 17 Non-Instructional Personnel Left to iii ; i(-GjJl Crist; Clara Fritche, Buukkt-t-ix Bessie ' lute, Recorder. Fifth Row —Trainer, Lawther; Managers, McDowell, Coup, Ahn, Football From beginning to end the 1955 football season proved to be exciting. In the first game a Freshman dominated Warrior squad took to the field, under the home lights, against Lincoln University. In scor- ing an 18-6 victory the blue and gold gave warning that they were a team to be reckoned with. A crowd oF 2,500 thrilled to their offensive power as Wayne Bohn, leading the way bv scoring two TDs, proved to be the necessary spark plug to generate the Warrior attack. In the second contest the Lycos faced Juniata, the finest small collepe team in the nation. The Warriors proved themselves proud even though they lost a close 14 to 13 decision at Huntington. Paul Motta and John Grier were the big guns in the Lyco offense. The blue and gold was the first team to even come close to defeatino Juniata in eighteen games. On October 22, the Warriors again ran up against a powerhouse among small college teams. Drexel Tech, unbeaten in eight games, lived up to expecta- tions by handing the home forces a 33-14 defeat. Homecoming was observed with the return of many alumni, but on the gridiron the Lycos were over- come by the offensive machine of the Dragons. John Joe was the Warriors standout in the many fine tackles and carries he made. In a dri ing rain storm 1,200 fans saw the blue and gold handed a heart breaking 14-13 defeat by Penn Militar ' Ct)llege. Fumbles, a nullified touch- down, and a missed extra point left the home forces on the short end of the score. In statistics, Lycoming led in almost all departments but final scores count. Ken Polcyn pro ed to be a fine end in his all around excellent play. P. M. C. won its twelfth victory in thirteen games and the Warriors went down to defeat number three. On November 5, the Busevmen traveled to Beaver Falls, Penna., where they were rudely welcomed by losing 6-0 to Geneva College. A blocked punt in the end zone in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference in the ball game. The two teams played on even terms in the other three quarters. In this contest the Warriors had a 65 yard run, by Wayne Bohn, to the Geneva two, called back. As usual, Lou DeFebo quarterbacked the club in fine style. Looking for revenge for a 20-6 defeat in 1954 by Lock Haven, the blue and gold had ' ictory snatched from their hands in the last 50 seconds as a long pass netted the Bobcats a 19-19 tie at Lock Haven. At the end of the 1st quarter, the blue and gold trailed 12-0, but bv the half it was 12-7 on a touchdown by John Grier. Two more tallies by Grier and Motta put the Lycos in the lead until the fateful last few seconds. Dad ' s Day pro ' ed to be an all around success as the Warriors crushed Lebanon Valley by 25-7. The snow had little effect on the Busey machine for the blue and gold ran hot in all quarters. Tired of be- ing shaded by the slim margin of eight points in three defeats, the home forces completeb ' stopped Leban- on Valley on the ground and wrecked the Dutch- men ' s ' aunted aerial attack. The bench was emptied so that all players would have a chance to play in the last contest of the season. The future looks bright as the experience of this year will provide a good basis for better seasons to come. 75 John Joe picks up yardage. Opposition makes temporary gain. Coach calls on reserves to play on a snow-covered field. Coach Green looks on as Coach Busey gives sideline encouragement. Red White All-State Tackle Ken Polcyn AllSlate End Fatula gains ground on a rain-soaked field. Interception attempt bv Grier. McGraw crashes the line for an important tackle. Basketball The Warriors opened the 1955-56 basketball season before a cheering crowd, with a smashing 76-61 victorv over Washington and Jeflrerson Col- lege. Ron Kitt proved to be too much for the Presidents ' defense as he scored 21 points and led the way in rebounds. In their second contest the Warriors won a thrilling come-from-behind ' ic- torv over, alwavs tough, Mansfield, on the oppo- nent ' s hardwoods. Movins well against Mansfield ' s pressing defense in the last 10 minutes, the War- riors drew a number of fouls and made them stand up in a roaring 45-point second half. Joe Hawkins led the Lvcos with 24 points. Victorv number three came easilv as the Blue and Gold outclassed Washington College 85-61 on the home court. Led bv Al Wilson ' s 20 points the Smithmen never were reallv threatened. The Warriors, still without the services of guard Joe Flawkins, who had injured his hand at Alansfield, were extended at Susque- hanna in winning 62-57. The rebound work of Ron Kitt, along with his 18 points, proved to be the difference as the Blue and Gold won number four without defeat. As the season progressed, Lebanon Valle ' caught the Smithmen off form and defeated them. Then rebounding from their loss, the Lvcos soundlv defeated Susquehanna 84-69. Al Wilson and Joe Hawkins scored 55 of the team ' s 84 points, while Don Habel displaved his rebound- ing abilitv. Wilson continued to hit often as he led the Warriors to a Frank Meriwell finish over Mansfield. LInable to keep up with the pace set bv Wilkes the Smithmen fell at Wilkes-Barre even though Al Wilson scored 34 points. Not dis- couraged the Blue and Gold, in the most thrilling game of the season, downed Morax ' ian College 100-94 in o ertime. Joe Porter proved to be the spark in the o ertime period. The following night, after staging a great rally, the Lvcos fell short and lost their first game at home, to Elizabethtown, bv a 75-72 score. Al Wilson led the Smithmen ' ith 18 points. The following night the Warriors came from behind several times only to lose to Juniata, in overtime at Huntington, bv a 98-85 score. Hawkins scored 35 and Wilson 29 to lead the locals. As the season continued at a rapid pace the jinx at Elizabethtown held up and the Smithmen fell again. The team was led bv Wilson ' s 18 points. Returning home, the Warriors ran into stiff com- petition and dropped a hard fought 89-81 decision to Bloomsburg. Hawkins plaved his usual fine game and chipped in with 23 points. On the road again the L ' Cos rebounded and blasted Lin- coln University 69-55. Wilson tallied 20 points to lead the wav in breaking a four game losing streak. Continuing to plav on foreign hardwoods, the locals could not cope with Lock Ha en ' s tight defense and lost 79-62. Onlv Al Wilson could hit with anv frequencv as he tallied 24. Returning home after their long road trip the Lvcos found the confines of the College Gvm to their liking and scored 22 straight points, in the first half, to down Roberts-Weslevan College, 69-54. In the short time 79 he played, Joe Ha kins scored 18 and played a fine defensi e game. Playing their second tilt at home in the same week the Blue and Gold gained sweet revenge as they beat Wilkes 86-77. Hawkins scored 33 and Zaremba 13, to lead the Warrior offense. Once again lea ing the home hardwoods the Smithmen dropped a rugged game to Scranton University. Ron Kitt scored 15 to lead the Lycos. Once again on the Hilltop court the Lvcos were not ery hospitable, for they downed their old tor- mentors, Lock Ha en, by a 81-66 score. The team was paced by Abbie Zaremba ' s 24 points. Continuing their home stand the locals were dropped b - Juniata 97-83. Al Wilson scored 21 and Ron Hughes played a fine defensive game. Traveling to Bloomsburg the next night, the War- riors were unable to find the victory column as they stumbled by a wide margin. Bloom ran hot and the Warriors could not stem the tide. Returning home for the last contest of the season the Smith- men finished the season in a blaze of glory as they defeated a good West Chester State team by a 104-88 score. Senior members of the squad Joe Hawkins and Abbie Zaremba scored 23 and 27 respectively in their final game for the locals. They received a standing o ■ation, from a packed house, as they left the floor. The seasons to come should pro ' ide fine basketball for Lyco fans as the Blue and Gold displa ' ed a strong Freshman second strino this year. Wilsun ' b tainuui la up. Abbie Zaremba, Senior. Baseball The 1955 season of the Lvco baseball team was actually more colorful than the score column indicates. In posting a 3-8 mark, the blue and gold piaxed some of the top college teams in the state. In their opening contest jack Edgar held the Bucknell Bisons to a 1-1 tie till the 8th inning when the roof fell in. A costly error opened the door for an 8 run outburst. This was a pattern that vyas established in later games. It just seemed the Warriors could not hold on for the last two innings. The brightest spots of the entire season were the two ictories posted o er their old tormentor. Mansfield, b 13-4 and 9-5 scores. This had not happened for many years. The other lone victory came in 11 innings against Susquehanna. Bobbie Meconi ' s timely hitting pro ed to be the difference. In many of the defeats such as Lock Haven, Wilkes, Juniata, and Eiizabethtown the blue and gold pitchers were hit hard in the late innings. With a lack of real bench strength to back up the starting nine, the first string had to usually play the entire game. The 1956 season looks ery good. With all but two of last year ' s team returning, along with many freshmen, the L cos fortunes on the diamond should impro ' e b ' leaps and bounds. Schiffman hit s a line drive. Kiess makes an easy out.
