president Jan. 14, 1955 To the Class of 1955: This is the last chapter of a book which has taken more than thirty years to write — one chapter a year. These chapters are the greet- ings I have been permitted to write for the Dart and the Arrow. I have been reading these chapters recently and have found them very revealing. They tell indirectly of the development of an institution and frequently reflect my personal feelings as I have dis- covered possibilities, seen their realization de- layed and later brought to fruition. One chapter tells of the establishment of the Junior College, another nearly twenty years later of the change of name to Lycoming and the realization of a four year college fully recognized and accredited. Different chapters tell of hardships and crises — the depression during the thirties, the second World War, the Korean police action. Other chapters tell of dreams fulfilled — • the gym, the chapel. Memorial Hall, Rich Hall, John W. Long Library and other buildings, the enlarged and beautified campus extending to Washintgon Boulevard. All the chapters re- flect our interest in the students and our satis- faction in their progress and achievements. Other things keep crowding into our mem- ories which we cannot take the space to relate. I share this experience with the Class of 1955 — we have all come to the end of an im- portant period of our lives — you have come to the end of your college course, I to the end of my years at Lycoming. There is, however, this important difference; you are facing the future strong in confidence which your train- ing here has given you. I necessarily, to a great extent, am looking backward cherishing the memories of more than thirty years of stimulating associations with youth and a loyal staff of able co-workers. Young people of the Class of 1955 — and the members of other clas ses of Dickinson Seminary, Dickinson Junior College and Ly- coming College — as I have known you over a long, critical and complex period, as you hove faced the hardships of a prolonged depression, the hazards and sacrifices of two wars and the opportunities and challenges of peace time; you strengthen my faith in the future of our College, our Country and our Way of Life. Our hearts, our home, our prayers, our tears. Our faith triumphant o ' er our fears. Are all with thee — are all with thee! Faithfully yours. President 12
