LYCOMING COLLEGE 3 8130 10026 1990 ff Tl ■the arrow 1955 published by the senior class lycoming college williamsport, Pennsylvania Jane Keyte, Editor Richard Haas, Business Monoger To a great teacher and administrator- a man prolific in things of the mind and of the spirit, the embodiment of all the hopes and ideals we envision as Lycoming — we, the Class of 1955, dedicate this book. To the hundreds of students on the campus now, as well as to the many alumni. President John W. Long shall al- ways remain a leading figure. During his thirty-three years as President of our institution we have watched Lycoming grow from Dickinson Seminary to Dickinson Junior College, and thence to its present status, a four-year degree-granting College. We have seen the addition of Clarke Memorial Chapel, the John W. Long Library, and our modern women ' s dormitory. Rich Hall, to say nothing of new class buildings. Dr. Long will be remembered not only for his wise and willing assistance, but also for his captivating personality and true friendship. In him one may discover the symbol of all that is Lycoming. L-J [« dr. John w. long dedication 43181 in memoriam One of the most sorrowful moments on the campus of Lycoming College was felt early lost sum- mer when news reached us of the death of John A. Streeter. After obtaining both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts Degree in economics, commerce, and finance, from the Pennsylvania State University, Mr. Streeter came to the Lycoming College faculty as a member of the Business Department in 1946. An Associate Professor, he was named head of the Business Division shortly preceding his death. Students and faculty members alike admired his keen intelligence in his field and envied his quick wit and subtle humor both in and out of the class- room. In behalf of everyone at Lycoming, the ARROW staff wishes to extend deepest sympathy to Mr. Streeter ' s family and friends and to express admiration for a man they knew and loved. John streeter foreword The purpose of this yearbook is to bring to its readers a story of Lycoming College in word and picture. The editors of the book have en- deavored to do this by dividing the book itself into three sections, namely these: The College, The Activities, and The Campus Life. In the first are found the President ' s Message, a re- sume of the curriculum of the college illustrated by means of appropriate pictures, and individual shots of the faculty, administration, and senior class, along with group pictures of the other classes. The second section is made up of the regular campus activities, which includes clubs, organi- zations, and fraternities. The last part is concerned with sports and the incidental things which go on at college that help to make it a wonderful place in which to be. In this edition of THE ARROW, it is the sincere desire of the staff to present Lycoming as it is today; therefore, we present this ARROW of 1955 as a permanent record of life at Lyco. table of contents the college the activities the campus life The College .. . 10 President ' s Message 12 Board of Directors 13 Administrative Heads . 14 The Professors .. . . 17 Humanities 21 Social Science . . . . 24 Science .... 26 Business Administration 29 Education . . 30 Terminal Education 31 Senior Class ... 32 Senior Class Who ' s Who 42 Chieftain . . . . . 44 Terminals . . . . . 48 Junior Class 50 Sophomore Class 51 Freshman Class . . . . 52 The Nurses . . . . 53 The Activities . . . . 54 Clubs and Organizations 56 Fraternities 73 Honor Society . . . . 79 The Campus Life 80 Informal Shots 82 Sports .... 84 Alumni Homecoming 100 Christmas Cheer 102 Semester Exams 103 Spring Time 104 May Queen and Her Court 105 Letter From the Editor 108 Student Roster 111 Advertisements 116 ' 9 £ i n r ' ' the college president Jan. 14, 1955 To the Class of 1955: This is the last chapter of a book which has taken more than thirty years to write — one chapter a year. These chapters are the greet- ings I have been permitted to write for the Dart and the Arrow. I have been reading these chapters recently and have found them very revealing. They tell indirectly of the development of an institution and frequently reflect my personal feelings as I have dis- covered possibilities, seen their realization de- layed and later brought to fruition. One chapter tells of the establishment of the Junior College, another nearly twenty years later of the change of name to Lycoming and the realization of a four year college fully recognized and accredited. Different chapters tell of hardships and crises — the depression during the thirties, the second World War, the Korean police action. Other chapters tell of dreams fulfilled — • the gym, the chapel. Memorial Hall, Rich Hall, John W. Long Library and other buildings, the enlarged and beautified campus extending to Washintgon Boulevard. All the chapters re- flect our interest in the students and our satis- faction in their progress and achievements. Other things keep crowding into our mem- ories which we cannot take the space to relate. I share this experience with the Class of 1955 — we have all come to the end of an im- portant period of our lives — you have come to the end of your college course, I to the end of my years at Lycoming. There is, however, this important difference; you are facing the future strong in confidence which your train- ing here has given you. I necessarily, to a great extent, am looking backward cherishing the memories of more than thirty years of stimulating associations with youth and a loyal staff of able co-workers. Young people of the Class of 1955 — and the members of other clas ses of Dickinson Seminary, Dickinson Junior College and Ly- coming College — as I have known you over a long, critical and complex period, as you hove faced the hardships of a prolonged depression, the hazards and sacrifices of two wars and the opportunities and challenges of peace time; you strengthen my faith in the future of our College, our Country and our Way of Life. Our hearts, our home, our prayers, our tears. Our faith triumphant o ' er our fears. Are all with thee — are all with thee! Faithfully yours. Upstairs in the same building are some prospective artists. And what is a college, or any school, without language and speech! ' Everyone in the liberal arts school has fought, wrestled, or slid his way through a foreign language, and Lycoming is no exception. Even promising politicians can get their start in Lycoming ' s speech department! Philosophy and religion ploy on im- portant role in a Methodist institution Everyone involved profits from his study in these two fields, and the pre-ministerial students end social workers find a special opportunity for study herein. iiMiiiiHiii social science Two of the important social sciences are psychology and sociology. A definite necessity to church and social workers, the study of the why ' s and wherefore ' s of human behavior is intriguing to all con- cerned. Economics, history, end political sci- ence majors leave Lycoming never to forget their hard but profitable labor in that department. Though they worked and slaved, all hailed the political honeymoon. science Prospective bug collectors and astro- nomers found their way to Lycoming too. In the biology and science lab they learned all about physical processes and responses and set out to prove that Albert J. Schwitzer didn ' t have anything on them ! T M The chemistry lab was always a safe (?) place to search for the pre-medical students, nurses, or laboratory tech- nicians. Lycoming is proud to boast that, by means of its chemistry and physics department, we helped several such as- pirants on their way. The last thre e of the sciences, drawing, mathematics, and physical education, are important to Lycoming too. Our share of the cooperative engineering program with Bucl nell University and the Pennsylvania State University can easily be recognized in the first two courses mentioned. As for the latter, many persons know and praise our athletic ability, especially on the basketball floor. business administration All great business tycoons know that a college education is necessary in to- day ' s world for a successful business The department in Business Administra- tion of Lycoming contains highly practi- cal courses in the field of business and economics and is rapidly expanding. OVViCil 1 education Secondary education is a relatively new field to Lycoming. By meeting the re- quired specifications, we were able to send out practice teachers to secondary schools in Williamsport and surrounding areas, for that course, and later as full- time certified secondary teachers to their chosen destination. terminal education Terminal education still ranks high on the agenda of Lycoming College. Many businessmen of Williamsport and other areas can vouch for the preparedness and efficiency of our secretarial science and medical secretarial majors Left to Right — Richard Haas, George Forfner, Bernadefte Hickey, Thomas Spitl senior class As we, the 1955 graduating class of Lycoming College, think back upon our campus life, our great- est hope is that we will have contributed something to the college, even if it be only a small percentage of what it has given to us. We realize that com- mencement means not the end of our learning, but actually the beginning of our education. Each of us takes this opportunity to thank Lycoming College for the foundation for living which we have acquired here. As our officers, we have elected the following : President, George Fortner; Vice-President, Thomas Spitler; Secretary, Bernadette Hickey; and Treasur- er, Richard Haas. 32 dale I. aderhold warrensville, pa. To become eligible, a student must be a leader in extracurricular activities and attain a satisfactory academic standing. Identification is a blue hat bearing a large gold I in front, to be worn by the members. Each Moving Up Day juniors are selected to succeed the graduating seniors in the society. In this way, those who are outstanding in extracurricular ac- tivities are given public recognition for their work. Those elected to the society for the 1954-1955 term were Bernadette Hickey, Jane Keyte, Richard Haas, George Fortner, Robert Zanker, and Menno Good. 79 f sUfe the campus life We came unpacked got acquainted registered 82 paid our bills bought our books helped or were helped in hazing then got to work 83 sports Long noted for its athletic ability, Lycoming College holds a varied sports program. For the entire school year, cheerleaders and sports enthusiasts cheer our varsity teams on to victory. Un- der the direction of James W. Sheaffer, the College Band is an important part of the arousing and holding of school spirit. To keep abreast of modern trends in sports events, Lyco belongs to the following athletic conferences: The N. C. A. A. (National Collegiate Athletic Association) The M. A. A. C. (Middle Atlantic Athletic Conference) The N. A. I. A. (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). 84 intramurals The intramural program at Lycom- ing College is one of the highlights of the school season. On the following pages we shall attempt to present to you a few shots of this program. We have tried to show you Lycoming inside, as well as outside the classroom. I hope this book will be a re- minder to all the seniors of the last four fun-packed, experience-filled days of their formal education. For underclassmen, let this book serve as a remembrance of the past and a goal for the future. In expressing my appreciation to those who con- tributed to the publication of the ' 55 ARROW, I should like to give special consideration to the following: James Frailey and the Grit Publishing Company for printing the book itself; Robert Somerville Portrait Studio for taking the formal pictures; Bob Innes for his pains-taking labor at the camera; Hank Long for tracking down the faculty pictures; Rich Felix for his untiring work on the advertis- ing staff; Dick Ha as for taking care of the business; Mr. Chandler and Mr. Richmond for their editorial and busi- ness advice respectively; and Gene London for his kind encouragement and helping hand when the going was tough. As a parting gesture, let me impress on those re- maining behind that Lycoming is a wonderful and pro- gressive institution, and it is up to you to keep it a mem- orable school for those who have gone before you as well as for those who are yet to come.
