In her class- room we know that we have found a real friend, and with our interest we know that we have found a patient and willing con- cern. So it is with great pleasure that the Class of 1954 dedicates this yearbook to trances e. knights ■r ' H trances e. knights dedication in memoriam In the passing of time we all encounter a dark moment. One such moment in our life at Lycoming, was last summer when the loss of Roger Smith was felt by all. His athletic ability was admired and his gentlemanly conduct was envied. He came to Lycoming from Williams- port High School where he was an outstanding student. While at Lycoming he studied in the Liberal Arts course and demonstrated his ath- letic ability on both the basketball court and the baseball diamond. We sincerely hope this yearbook will help to further the impressions he made and that this will continue to be part of life at Lycoming for all time. roger smith w. caldwell mafhias The students and faculty have selected W. Caldwell Mothios as their chieftain, who in their opinion, has contributed the most to Lycoming College. He has evidenced this with his pleasing personality and his ability to get along with his co-workers, both students and faculty. While supporting school activi- ties he has maintained a high scholastic standing. chieftain award summer fall winter spring table of contents SUMMER 10 Summer School 13 President ' s Message 14 Board of Directors 15 Administrative Heads 16 The Professors 19 FALL 24 Opening of School 26 Freshman Hazing 28 Glosses .... 30 Junior and Sophomore Who ' s Who 33 Alumni Homecoming 34 Intramural Fall Sports . 36 WINTER 38 Christmas Cheer 40 Just Another Day . 44 Basketball 46 Cheerleaders 53 Clubs and Organizations 54 Intramural Winter Sports 68 SP RING 70 Senior Class 72 Senior Class Who ' s Who 84 Intramural Spring Sports 86 Intramural Champs 87 Baseball 88 Tennis 90 Fraternities 92 May Queen and Her Court 100 Student Roster 109 Advertisements 113 V summer .■• y summer school t , --f Boyf It sure is hot in here. president dr. John w. long Dec. 31, 1953 Dear Friends : I am writing this on the last day of the old year. The echoes of Merry Christmas and inspiring Christmas carols have about faded out for this year and the bells ringing in the New Year will be sounding within the next few hours. The papers during the last few days have been appraising the outstanding events of the year 1953 and making pred ictions for the new year. The atomic age seems to bring with it uncertainty and fear. Perhaps the main rea- son is the fact that its destructive power has been publicized rather than its possibilities as a servant of mankind. These lines will reach you when the Arrow is released sometime before commencement. At that time you will be facing a situation somewhat similar to the one we are facing today as we leave the old year and are about to enter the new. That is, you will be leaving the sheltered halls of Lycoming with its many pleasant associations and friendships and will be facing a future which will be, though hope- ful, still problematical. Under these circum- stances I want to leave with you words which were spoken by the late King George in one of the darkest hours of World War II. I re- member hearing them spoken over the radio and though I had been familiar with them before they never seemed so impressive as when uttered by the King when he faced the uncertainties and responsibilities of that par- ticular hour. I pass them on to you, therefore, with that historical background. I said to a man who stood at the gate of the year: Give me a light that I might tread safely into the unknown! And he replied: Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than the known way! Faithfully yours. 14 A ' hirst Acw, Lett to Right — Long, Rich, Wilson. Second Row — Myers, Miller, Hennmger, Stecker, WatkJns, Lyon, Williams, Adams, Phipps, Gilmore. Third Row — Lykens. I want to thank those who have spent many hours with me in seeing our dream come true: Donna Ertel and Bob Deans, who acted as my associate editors; Dick Haas, for taking care of the money problems; Joan Thompson, who worked on the advertising; Jane Keyte, for writing the copy; Barbara Yerkes, who handled the faculty section; Hank Knaus, who dis- tributed the book; Steve Secol, who worked the sports section; the Art Staff, which consisted of Paul Rupert, Barbara Griffith, Lon Fluman, and Bob Hewitt; Wayne Frey, who worked on the fraternity section; Nancy Goertz and Irene Wool, who did the typing; and to Bunny Tan- tum, who took the pictures. My thanks to the Arrow ' s two advisers, Mr. John Chandler and Mr. John Hollenback, for their advice on edi- torial and business problems. In closing I want to thank all the people who have done the little things, the things which we could have not done without. Editor-in-Chief 107 student roster ABBOTT, ROBERT H,, II 31 N.
