It ended like this: 'tlf you wish to be part of this clean up effort and have no one to help organize it in your area, write to the Attack Against Agnes Committee. 90 Ster- ling Avenue, Dallas. PA, We will be pleased to have you as part of our project. After Hurricane Agnes raked the Eastern States last year, flood waters blanketed many areas of Pennsyl- vania. The Wyoming Valley area was especially hard hit. and the scene in Luzerne County was hectic. wet. and desperately in need of repair. Flood damage ran high It wauld take a lot of time and hard work to erase what the flooding had left behind. When the waters receded, the Cir- cle K Club from Luzerne Commun- ity College reported to their campus to begin cleaning up what had been a clean, attractive college. While en- gaged in their work. members of the club talked about planning a valley- wide cleanup effort. All that re- mained after that was to do it The first step Circle K took was to call a meeting of Kiwanians. Circle K and Key Club members from the area to help plan the operation. The Dallas Kiwanis Club. Dallas Key Club, Penn. State University at Leh- man. Wilkes College. GtAtR. Key Club and West Side Technical High School all joined the Circle K'ers from Luzerne in their effort to plan an effective program to tight the aRermath of the flood. They wrote letters to every club in their district. asking that they too direct their ener- gies where they were needed most. where the flooding had hit the harde est. A weekend of hard work was planned and many clubs offered to help. Others sent checks to aid flood victims in the valley. 82 ABOVE, SEATED: Vince Marchikaitis, Peggy Hall, Mansur Lakadawala, Joseph Suprum. STANDING: Diane Grant, Marjorie Morris, Marge Papsun, Josephine Fialkow- ski. BELOW: national recognition came to the College club via a magazine article on Circle K's flood clean-up participation. All the clubs in the area were there. Circle K Clubs from Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science and New York College of Insurance showed up to lend a hand. In addition to these clubs. members of West Chester Kiwanis Club and West Chester High School provided some much needed manpowerl When the weekend was over. the amount ofwork done was incredible. almost as incredible as the amount left to dot It was obvious that another weekend would be needed. Time was getting on into October. and another weekend was being planned for the Spring because of the prohibitive weathert The rou A of workers from West Chester responded to the idea with a phone call and still another work weekend was planned for the last weekend of the month. in spite of the weather. Sixteen High School students and four Kiwanians showed up from West Chester and joined the people from Luzerne. No matter how hard they worked. more and more things popped up that needed to be done, Circle K responded with a helping hand. wherever and whenever there was a need.
