How often in the years ahead will there be flashed upon our inner consciousness a reverent memory of Dennis Seidl, Page Four MR. GREGOR Your Annual theme. Understanding Today -Peace Tomorrow ' is evidence of how fully this factor occupies the minds of our students. As teachers we are not unmindful of the situa¬ tion and of our responsibility to do every¬ thing possible to help you to adjust yourself to a world of great opportunities but, never¬ theless, bewildering complexities and relative Insecurity, Yet while peace is paramount in our thinking, we cannot sacrifice for it our fun- d amenta I principles of truth. Peace is in the minds and hearts of a people. But just to the extent that avarice and ambi¬ tion and envy and anger and pride and pre¬ judice dwell in the minds and hearts of men; just to that extent is peace in jeopardy. As students you must educate yourselves, not only for useful jobs, but you must strive to under¬ stand and respect the cultures of other people. You must respect human rights and use your influence and efforts in the promotion of truth, freedom and peace. The human personality is a sacred entity that is all important to the in¬ dividual concerned. No race or culture has a monopoly on ability. Peoples of all races have much the same potentialities. r he cultural and scientific contributions of the past have not been monopolized by any one race ft is time that our perspective extends beyond the nar¬ row bounds of nationalism and encompasses an international viewpoint Our enormous arsenal for war is effective in deterring aggressive action by potential ene¬ mies, But even more important is the spiritual and moral force of a great nation Through study and training we should understand, ap¬ preciate and revere those fundamental prin¬ ciples that are a part of our heritage and are incorporated in the Bill of Rights of our Con¬ stitution These rights are a foundation for peace. We should defend them not only for ourselves but for all people. What can you do in meeting the challenges of these uncertain times? Inform yourself! Prepare yourself as fully as possible for your life work Your job may be humble but give it your very best effort. Your contribution may seem insignificant to you. You may feel you are only one but you are one! The destiny of humanity rests with the many J ones ' J that make up the population of the world Paye Six ANNUAL STAFF Back Row —1. Agam lie, N. It did much to help the school by solving many problems and by working with the student body and faculty The Council tried harder this year to inform the student body what the Council was doing. This was done by reading the minutes of each meeting over the P.A. System. The Student Council again sponsored the annual Christmas Party. It also worked hard in preparing for the District Convention which was held at Lux¬ emburg, As a group and as individuals the Student Council was of great service to the school. The Student Council is composed of three regular members from each class. An alternate member h also chosen from each class who attends all meet¬ ings but votes only if a regular member is absent The Student Council advisors are Miss Hannon and Mr. Klappauf. Those students who work in the library and who are able to pass a bask course of study of library procedures are given a fourth of a credit at the end of each school year. The Library Club offers to students an opport¬ unity to learn new skills, skills which may help them find work after graduation, but most Important it offers them an opportunity to serve their fellow stu¬ dents and to undertake a degree of responsibility in their position behind the desk Other than the regular monthly dance, the Club sponsored no other aettvties. The money collected from the dances was used in the purchase of new books. Much credit for the fine work in teaching the members goes to Mr, Donald Schimmels, advisor, and Mrs, Thomas Rueckl who helps the students in their assignments. THE THREAD THAT RUNS SO TRUE Lonesome Valley Rural School in the Kentucky mountains was the setting for this years senior class play. Jesse Stuart {Warren Jadin), a young Kentucky farm boy of eighteen, with three years of high school under his belt is determined to bring education Jo the young people in the hills His friend, Don Con¬ way (Jack Wink), 19, who wants to get through eighth grade before he marries Sally Walden, (Doro¬ thy Wachal), is being discouraged by his mother, Bertha (Babara Kinjerski), and his father, John Con¬ way (Jim Dorner), who says Marryin ' comes before schooling, 1 ' The Conway ' s daughter, Vaida {Mary Beirl), is a pupil in the school. Her duty is to report everything that goes on in an effort to close the school. Jesse is warned that his biggest trouble will come from Guy Hawkins (Jerry Van Drtsseh who is twenty years old and has been in first grade for eight years. Backing his mischievous actions is his friend. Ova (Mike Arendt). Naomi Deane Norris (Kay Dewane), the only stu¬ dent in the school who may get to high school, be¬ comes more than a student to Jesse. Her dapper friend, Bill Coffee (Tom Sheffy) fails to see why anyone would be interested in an education. The bell sounds on the first day and is answered by Grandma Binion (Sherry DeJardin) and Jenny Jarvis (Joanne Agamatte) the oldest and youngest pupils at Lonesome Valley rural school. Other pupils are Robin Baylor (Lucy Theys), Leonora Maddox, (Mary Ann VandenPlas), Xenia Potters (Carol Bouc- honville), Minnie Frame (Mary Jane Ledvina), Edith Hanks (Lois Mueller), Snookie Baylor (Tom Corner), Peter Snoggers (David Paque), and Budge Waters (Larry Metzler), a mathematics whiz. All are over the usual age for a grade school, Jesse ' s efforts to form a consolidated district brings down the wrath of the schoolboard, John Conway, Aunt Effie (Donna Soquet), and Uncle Amos (Darold VandenHouten), Burt Eastham ' s (Norman Nejedlo) dream of a bas¬ ketball team in the vally gives Jesse an idea of how to impress the people with the need for keeping the school He decides to have his school challenge Landsburgh School for scholastic championship. Mem¬ bers of the opposing team are Eva (Janice Zeitler), Celeste (Karen Colfe), and Eleanor (Shirley Retry), Their dedicated teacher is Mrs. Woods (Sharon Daul). A touching moment occurs when Billy Leonard (Dale Ducat) arrives for the contest with his feet wrapped in burlap because he had no shoes. All ends well when all are made to see that the ' Thread That Runs So True ' is the dedicated teacher, and that all professions stem from this one profes¬ sion. The play was put on under the able direction of Mr, Donald Schtmmeis. Page Forty-seven MUSICAL COMEDY ftiick Row 0 LcibL G, Ntmmer, G. Arendt. C Arendt, T ScidL M. BetH.
