MR. GREGOR A NEW PERSPECTIVE FOR EDUCATION Nuclear fission and fusion and rockets with the possibility of space travel is ushering in an age unsurpassed for its challenging, exciting and dangerous possibilities. For the first time our country is confronted with the possibility of being relegated to the status of a second rate power. Public institutions and their programs are being subjected to the most critical scrutiny. This is especially true of our schools because the remarkable scientific and technological achievements of ihe Russians are being credited to their education program. It took a national crisis having implications existence as a free nation to make us see education in its proper perspective with relation to survival in a nuclear and rocket age. Billions of dollars were always available to buy survival in terms of the munitions and trained personnel were relatively negligible on the national level. We spent one third more for alcohol than education and five-seven¬ ths as much as for tobacco as for education. Political maneuvering killed a bill for Federal aid for school building construction, Now it appears probable that Federal appropriations for scholarships for outstanding students may be a reality. For the first time educational training is being given equal importance with guns, bombs and rockets. It is indeed fitting that the class of 1958 should choose as the theme of their edition of Memories in Blue, Man ' s Right to Knowledge and the Free Use There¬ of Never have we been made more deeply aware of its implications for our personal welfare. At last we are beginning to realize that our most fundamental resource resides in the minds of our people. That, rather than bombs, will make or break our country. That is our security.
