You are your own most important teacher, since you alone knew what you really think and accept. You must commit yourself to the highest and best, for this will mean the difference between success and failure. These are the years of forming and shaping your personality, opinions, ambitions and beliefs. Do not underestimate their importance. Someday soon you will be stepping into an adult world and then you shall recognize the fact that these years guide the final outcome of your life. What you do now will determine your success or failure later. It is hoped that the guidance, counsel, and care that have been given to you will help to formulate your future. Do your tasks as well as you knew how. Remember life gives the final examination—the one that really counts. 4 John Holsen John Rath For the past nine years Mr. John Holsen has been serving as Senior High Principal at Liwerne High School. He received a B. A. degree from Con- cordia and a M. A. degree from the University of Minnesota. Mr. John Rath has received a B. S. degree from General Beadle and a M. S. from South Dakota State. He has served as Junior High Principal of Luverne High School for the past three years. As the superintendent of Independent School Dis- trict 670, Harvey Eitreim has become a well-known and necessary part of the educational machinery of LHS. Mr, Eitreim received his Bachelor's Degree in science from Augustana College, his Master's from South Dakota State, and did graduate work at the University of South Dakota. Working co-operatively with Mr. Eitreim for the benefit of our school are the men of our school board. One of the most import- ant issues handled in 1963 by Mr. Eitreim and the school board was that of a school bond. This bond was voted on by the votars of District 670, and was accepted minus a proposed swimming pool. The bond will finance a new addition to LHS. Board of Education Mort Skewes, Albert Goehie, Elmer Piepgras, A1 Bot, 0. M. Lippi, Curtis Laudon, Ernest Hamann, and Harvey Eitreim. If we had known you less we would not grieve Seeing the year its course has nearly run. We would be glad our task Is almost done. Glad for the bit of rest we shall receive. It would not trouble us to see you leave; And, walking through the halls class- rooms where We meet so often now, their emptiness Would not oppress us when you are not there. It would not matter much; We would not care;— If we had known you less. But we have watched your minds hearts grow strong. Pitted against the problems of the hour; And we have felt a deep, upwelling power. As, like a mighty wave, you surge along Into the future, where your lives belong,— The radiant future, where your dreams will grow And flower and fruit upon some distant shore. To watch your progress there we may not 90, But we rejoice in prospect even so, Knowing the promise you have shown before. Certain of its fulfillment more and more. Lowell E. Next to the home, a teacher creates the great- est impact upon the stu- dent, and realizing this, he tries not only to in- struct the student but also to make him a ve 11-rounded- individual eager to face life's challenges. Lu- verne's faculty can easily be rated as th e best of its profession. Mr. Clercx poses with his self-portrait. Nurse Going past the nurse's office in the morning, have you ever noticed some of the students standing in line holding paper slips? Admitting students back into school is only one of Mary Sue Tollefson’s duties as nurse for the Luverne schools. Keeping health records and making periodical health checks of all the students are two more tasks which keep our well-qualified nurse very busy. Cooks The nurse checks Jean Boone's tempera- ture before readmitting her to class. Long before the stu- dents of LHS start morning classes, the cooks are busy preparing the noon meal. They not only prepare meals on school days but also for special school events. Mrs. Myrtle Thompson, Mrs. Agnes Husen, Mrs. JoAnne Wagner, Mrs. Gladys Gordon. 12 Custodians Head custodian, Ted Mol and five other men assume the responsibi- lity of keeping our school In A-one condi- tion. 0 a y in and day out they clean, paint, and repair. Our thanks go to these custodians for performing their never-ending task. John Navara, Harvey Cook, Rudy Kallsen, Ted Mol, Hugh Leslie, Pete Meyer. Office Assistants Each day the atten- dance records, special messages, and routine office duties are per- formed by 14 senior high girls known as office assistants. These people work dur- ing their free period and for their services add points toward their activity pin. The dance ended a perfect week of float building, kings and queens, parades, and football games. After a grueling contest, the Cardinals were in their glory when they once again reclaimed the highly prized Battle Ax. When the last dance was over, the seniors had lumps in their throats and tears in their eyes to think that they had just completed their last Homecoming as students of LHS. Next year they'll return as alumni and what wonderful memories they will have of Homecoming, 1963. Donna does an inside job on the Student Council float. An interesting class for Cloyce Cooney and many others is art. Cheerleaders, Milly Hollister and Sue Leffert, originate one of the many signs that decorate the halls throughout the year. 18 Seniors Looking back with mixed emotions, some one hundred three seniors will receive their diplomas as graduates of the class of 1964., As we pause to think of the achievements, hard work, and fun of four years of high school, we soon realize that through the various experi- ences we have just begun to tread the path into the un- certainty of the future. As seniors we realize that we have experienced one phase of life, and that the time is nearing when our carefree years will end; as time pro- gresses we'll have to rely upon the knowledge w e 'v e gained and the experiences we've had to insure a grati- fying future and lifetime. Russell VanVoorst Arlene Veldkamp “Our Foreign Friend” Arriving from the new Fed- eration of Malaysia in Octo- ber of 1963 was Sarathathevy Thambiah, better known as Ranee by her LHS friends. Although Ranee came to Luveme after the school year had already begun, she adjusted herself well and soon became another typical high school student. While living in Luverne, Ranee makes her home with the Albert Christensen fam- ily. There she has acquired both a new brother and sister, Joel and Karen, and also her American mom and dad. Ranee has represented her country well during her year- long stay in Luveme. Besides giving talks and shewing pictures of her native land. Ranee has also had the task of keeping up with her home- work and taking an active part in Student Council. Her curriculum this year includes social studies, English, Am- erican history, speech, and typing. She is also a mem- ber of the American Field Service Club and a partici- pant of Phi Beta. When Ranee returns to Ma- laysia this summer, she will have many fond memories— slumber parties, dances, sports, activities, the Sno- Ball, Prom, and that biggest day, graduation. Not only the students of LHS but also the citizens of Luverne will remember many wonder- ful experiences shared with Ranee during 1963 and 1964. Senior boys—Dave, Brian, and Ole—chat with Ranee during her welcoming reception. Ranee converses with Joan Hawkinson, a fel low classmate. Government of the stu- dents, by the students, and for the students is a very suitable descrip- tion for our Senior High Student Council. Meeting every other week, the council is composed of a boy and girl representa- tive from each senior- high homeroom, the cabi- n e t, five members-at- large, and our foreign exchange student Besides serving as a sounding board for the student body. Student Council sponsors several projects during the school yeare LHS's Student Council can indeed be proud of its record of ruling the senior high as well this year as it has in past years. □ Howard Thompson, Cammy Martin, Dave Ganges tad. The Concert Band spends much time and effort to present performances such as both the winter and spring concerts. Prac- tice makes perfect, the age-old saying, is proven by the band; meeting four day s a week during noon hours and having sectionals on Tuesday keeps the already busy band stu- dents even busier. None of them seem to mind too much, however, for there is always a big reward waiting for them at the end of each per- formance. The student body of LHS indeed owes much to the energetic and very worthwhile organization. Be si de s providing entertainment for the student body and com- munity, students' par- ticipating in band ac- quire musical skill and knowledge. Work on each edition begins in the spring, progresses throughout the sumntter, and is finally completed late in February. With the guidance of their admired Mr. Vfeiranan, the staff not only works hard but also thoroughly enjoys the fun which goes along with participating in such a group. 56 Cammy Martin, Pat Eberlein, Charlotte Kack, Milo Herrmann, Sue Schoon, John Rodman - Copy Editors Steve Hovland, the Card- 1n a 1's photographer, prepares for another candid shot. TO THE STUDENTS OF LHSs As yearbook editors, we present to you, the students of Luveme High School, this 1964 CARDINAL. This yearbook pre- serves your memories and achievements of the 1963-64 school year. As you page through the CARDINAL,you will notice new ideas presented in pic- tures, design, and layout. All these have been made possible through the co- operation and combined efforts of many students. Each year new editors and staff members form ideas and incorporate them into ypur yearbook. The intro- duction, division, and activities throughout the book announces our theme----- Reaching. To the class of '64' we hope that this yearbook and Luveme High School will become your projection for success and happiness that will follow. Juniors find themselves in a demanding situation as the time is limited and there is so much to be accomplish- ed. Much of their time is ably spent in extra-curricu- lar activities. Many hours are spent planning and striv- ing to produce the biggest social event of LHS—the Junior-Senior Prom. They, of course, are looking forward to the climax of a student's life, that of be- ing a senior. The play centers around the frantic efforts of a misplaced vaudeville comedian trying to imper- sonate a notorious Western gunslinger, and the hor- rible situations he gets himself and everyone who is acquainted with him in- to. Due to an almost mi- raculous quirk of fate the problems are solved, and the play ends happily. Milo receives the finishing touches of his makeup before going on stage. Varsity Football Cardinal football success this year was culminated in the Redbirds 31-7 romp over arch-rival Pipestone in the battle for the Battle-Axe. L u verne finished off the season strong with a 25-12 win over a strong Slayton team which gave them a tie fdrthe conference championship with Redwood Falls. Redwood wa s th e only team to defeat IfB on the grid- iron this season. Strong line play by Luverne's forward wall was a major factor as is evidenced by the fact that three linemen gained honorable mention on the all-state team. Luverne was represented on the all-state team by Brian wells, Tony Mohr, Ron Westerbur, and John Rodman. Del Jessen, Brian wells, and Ron Westerbur were also named to the all-conference team. This year the boys had a good year with 3 wins and 2 losses. The Bomber squad is a prep- atory step toward varsity ball and the boys, through their hard work, gained seme valuable playing time. Through learning the fundamentals of blocking, tackling, kicking, defense, and offenae, the boys are the new strength for next year's var- sity. Varsity Wrestlers Under the guidance of Leonard Brown, the assistant wrestling coach, junior high wrestlers acquire the necessary experience to con pete on the varsity squad in future years. This young sport is acquiring greater participation in the lower grades and in a few years it will be able to compete with other major sports in spectator appeal. As any athlete can tell you, wrestling requires great individual effort and sacrifice and LHS can be proud of its team and the type of boys this budding sport turns out. Ron Westerbur, Ronnie Schmuck, and Terry Grave keep in physical shape. Varsity Basketball Friday nights find the LHS gym packed to its capacity since on these nights the local fans and LHS students can see the Cardinal basketball team in action. This year's team didn't dis- appoint the spectators. Senior Bill Toms was high scorer for the season. Greg Thone, our senior guard, shared co-captain honors with Bill. The experience of these twc seniors along with Delbert Jessen, Totr Kozney, and John Beyer gave us many thrilling memories of the 1963-1964 basketball season with their impressive records. Highlighting the season was the big game with the state champions, the Marshal tigers, in which Luverne was edged by two points. The team, under the sound coach- ing of Ray Merry and assistant Bob Lorentzen, gave the students a season to remember. Pre- sent at all LHS sport events- wrestling, basketball, and football-the A squad cheer leaders lead the entire stu- dent body in supporting our teams. Besides cheering a t sport functions these peppy girls hold practice at least once a week, show their artis- tic ability by printing signs for games, lead pepfests, and chaperone on student buses which travel to out-of-town games. Cheering their team on to victory are the Bomber cheer- leaders. Always peppy and vivacious these energetic girls portray the idea of supporting the team until the very end. Here the boys learn the basic principles of the game—drib- bling, shooting, defense, and offense. These boys, practic- ing at six o'clock in the morn- ing, work hard during practice and perform well in the games they play. This program is re- sponsible for building the fu- ture teams of the highly-rated LHS. Worried, but confident of a victory, Mr. Sands and Mr. Lorentzen watch the freshmen in action. Freshmen Cheerleaders The ninth grade athletes are eagerly supported by our youngest cheerleaders. These girls who are selected from among the many girls who compete each year for the privilege of leading their team on to victory can always be seen adding that extra ounce of support. Besides gaining valuable experience which they hope to use when they are pro- moted to varsity cheerleader?, the girls obtain unforget- table memories. Linda Boll, Jill Smith, Diane Mollberg, Laura Holland. Pe p Band The pep band ur- ges their team on to victory. “B” Squad Wrestlers Row 1: Robert Iverson, Bred Loger, Curt Mei- er, Phillip Hollaren, Dave Bowen, Dave Thomp- son, Don Preussler. Row 3: Steve Schmidt, Kent Gabrielson, Jerome Egan, Robert Skyberg, Mike Carlson, Scott Cochran, Steve Dennis. At the same time that bas- ketball is starting, the yxnj grapplers of LHS are begin- ning their training period. The Bomber wrestlers are boys fighting for varsity spots by challenging the wrestlers on the varsity team. In Bomber wrestling they learn the proper holds and maneu- vers by which a pin is made. Bomber wrestlers have a preliminary meet with each of the varsity foes just as in basketball. Wrestling is a growing sport in Luverne and prospects on the Bomber squad should provide a fine team in the future. Two B squad wrestlers demon- strate their wrestling ability. Seventh Grade Thoroughly enjoying their first year in jun- ior high, the seventh graders have shown the upper classes that their enthusiasm and eagerness aren't easily surpassed. The y ha v e found it less difficult than they thought it would be to adjust to the hustle and bustle of LHS life. Al- though upper classmen usually address them as the little seventh grad- ers, they take it in their stride and eagerly await the day when they will reach the last stage- seniors.
