Text from Pages 1 - 80 of the 1959 volume:

hool Year The 1958-59 annual staff, in the process of making this year book, have endeavored to provide the mem- orable events of the school year in picture and in story. During the past years we have made a specific dedication. This year, replacing dedication, we wish to present the students of Luverne High School with this Card- inal. Under the co-supervision of Garnett Ahrendt and Eleanor Rober, acting as senior editors, and Susan Norelius and Naida Johnson, our junior editors, supervised by Mr. Weinman, this book in its entirety was laid out last spring and fall. At that point, Mr. Schade and Mr. Eitreim and their staff, proceeded to take the necessary pictures required by the layout of the book. Mr. Sievers receives orders and issues the Cardinal respectively. During the past three years we have issued nearly 400 annuals each year. f Through the combined efforts of these people you have now in your possession the 1958-59 Cardinal. - fsĀ 0 jJ et day as o rtvet Ty 1 It. However, in Cardinal fashion, a six game winning streak was enjoyed by theā€˜team and Coach Erdman. The victims of the Cardinals were: Slayton, Jasper, Worthington, Lakefield, Fulda and probably the sweetest Pipestone. The team posted an 11-5 record, dropping the five losses by a total of 17 points. Although there were heart breaks, the Cardinals were still thought of as district power. Entering the District Tournament as a favorite, and a target for every school in the district, the Cards were edged by Fulda in a thrilling 66-65 district contest. As quoted by Coach Bob Erdman, Win or lose, they're champs The Bombers Coach Larson felt that the highlight of their season was the game at Mountain Lake when they defeated a good team by a margin of four points, 32-28. Their season would also be termed successful in establishing 13 wins 3 losses. L.H.S. Football (The Luverne High School Gridders, for a second consecutive year, posted an undefeated season. This accomplishment is certainly one to be proud of. A salute to Coach Anderson and his team. During the season the Cards out pointed their op- position scoring a total of 213 points to their opponents 65. The only teams that stayed in con- tention with Luverne were Brookings, which tied us, (7-7) and Jackson which we de- feated 27-20. The high point of the football season was, of course, Homecoming. The Cards played one of their better ball games pounding Marshall to a 34-6 victory. As a result of this fine team, the Cards remained Southwest Conference Champions and at- tained the ranking of the sev- enth best team in the state. Erich Vogt Through the American Field Service, Luverne was able to host, this year, Erich Vogt, a for- eign exchange student from Germany. Erich, as was Phil Piot our French foreign exchange student, enrolled in the senior class and spent the entire school year taking much the same subjects as his senior classmates. During his stay in Luverne, he resided at the home of Mr. Mrs. Ray Frick. Erich's year of stay in Luverne was made possible through the sponsership of the Luverne Stu- dent Body and the Luverne Rotary Club. We sincerely hope that Erich's stay in our school and city was most profitable to him and all of us wish him the best for his future endeavor.
