The students are grateful to the Luverne Rotary Club and the high school student council for giving us the chance to meet and know Phil. Through the foreign exchange program the National Field Service, who also sponsors Phil , strives to better relations between American students and students of foreign c ountries. Meet- ing students from other nations gives each of us an opportunity to compare school systems, community life and other aspects of everyday living. We the students are grateful for such an opportunity. As we will be the leaders of tomorrow, it is irrmor tant that we understand our neighbors across the ocean. Phil is an active student in L.H.S. being a member of the O. P. S. Club, Boys Glee Club, Mixed Chorus and Student Council. While in Luverne he makes his home with the Dr. G. N. Getman family. It has been a very rewarding experience having Phil with us as a fellow student and friend for the 1957-58 school year. Familiar to all of us in our journey through school is our school paper, the Echo, Every third week we have a chance to catch up on school news, social events, and sports. Care- ful organization and addi- tional planning and experi- menting on the part of the Editor and her assistants resulted in the best news coverage which the Echo has ever had. In the editorial depart- ment articles are edited, typed on first draft, proof- read, blocked, stenciled, and finished for art work. When all this is done, the stencils are then run off on the mimeograph machine. After the proper number of sheets have been printed , the pages are assembled and stapled. Finally they are counted and delivered. The Echo is truly an important and pleasant seg- ment of our travel on the road to completing our high school education. FRONT ROW: Mr. Gits, J. Schmuck, B. From the time school starts the marching band, under Mr. Johnson's fine super- vision, practices continuously to be in top shape for the numerous appearances it must make. The highlight of the fall parade season comes when the Luverne Marching Band takes part in the Tri-State Band Festival. School bands from three states compete for honors at this festival. The twirlers and flagswingers always add the finishing touches to the marching band as well as perform excellently on their own. This year the flagswingers won first place at the Tri-State Baixi Festival in the flagswinging division and Eleanor Rober won top honors in individual baton twirling. These groups also do a fine job entertaining the fans at half-time of home basketball games. I I I I I I • FRONT ROW: D. Dibbern, J. Cummings, S. Bagbey, S. Toms, E. Cousyn, C. Quanbeck, K. QUEEN LORA LEE SCHMIDT Cardin KING MERLYN GROTH As the opening chord of Pomp and Circumstance sounded on September 26, 1957, the crowd be- came breathlessly quiet. Suddenly the spot- lights were flashed to the back of the little theater and the first members of the royal party, the pages, Au- drey Padilla and Steven Eberlein, came down the aisle bearing the robes, crowns, and sceptre. Then came the princesses: Lor na Forrest from the freshman class; Audrey Madison representing the sophomore class; and Pat Iverson from the junior class. Next the senior royalty candidates entered. The couples were Ruth Beatty and Orrin Ander- son, Judy Cummings and Kenneth Bjerk, Darlene Dibbern and Dennis Jorgenson, and Lora Lee Schmidt and Merlyn Groth, When the coronation procession reached the stage, Ronald Bowman, who would crown the king and queen, stepped forward. Cardinal Capers for 1957 Merlyn King 54 That evening turn- ed out to be perfect foot - ball weather and found the Cardinals ready for their Tracy opponents. By the half time of the game the happy Luverne fans saw their team with a substantial lead. Dur- ing the intermission. Queen Lora Lee was presented and the band put on a colorful show. On Friday, Septem- ber 27, school was dis- missed at 2:00 to make way for the grand parade. The theme for this year's review was Wide, Wide World and the various clashes and organiza- tions entered floats de- picting various pastimes and places of the world. Taking the honors were the Annual and Vocal floats, showing Golf, America's Pastime and Hawaii, the Vacation- land respectively. The second half followed much the same pattern and the game e nded with Luverne rolling over Tracy 45-21. Following the game a magni- ficent homecoming dance was sponsored by the juniors and proved the perfect finale to Homecoming, 1957. The Cards' record during regular play was 13 wins and 4 losses, a record of which we can all be proud. The season was climaxed by five tournament games, three of which were won by the Cards to give them the District 8 title for the third time in a row; the fourth game gave the cagersno less than a runner-up position in the Region 2 Tournament, but they were beaten by one point by Mankato in the fifth and final regional championship game. The varsity was paced by Dennis Jorgenson and Merlyn Groth, the only two seniors on the squad this year. With these two gone next season, the team will surely suffer a loss, but we are sure the Luverne fans can look forward to a successful '58 - '59 basketball season.
