A Ahrendt DEDICATION We the students of Luverne High School wish to dedicate this, our 1957 Cardinal, to our School Board, whose tireless job it has been to facilitate our growing problems and future needs. To each member we wish to extend our deepest appreciation for the contributions of his time and energy freely given in word and deed for the improvement and advancement of our education. We express our gra- titude for all that you have done in providing for us the best education possible. We are truly grateful and express our thanks nowand for many years to come for the most valued contribution of all, our new educational building. Words cannot express our gratitude for a group of men who forsaw into the future the need for improvement and, most important, fulfilled the need. To you, who led the way in raising 1-1 2 million dollars fc?r the education of youth, we give a small token of our appreciation, and hope that we can repay this debt by producing intelligent citizens of tomor- 3 row. 73C© S c H 0 0 L Mrs. Dolores Friestad Mr.Eitreim's Secretary Mr. Harvey Eitreim, Superintendent Mr .-John Holsen, Sr. High Principal Miss Alva Berg, Jr. High Principal Miss Martha Nelson Miss Janette Engstrom Secretaries FRONT ROW: A. Junior High Student Council Statesmen in the Making Organized on the same principles as the senior high council, the junior high student council has a cabinet composed of the following: Donald Phillips, Chairman; Thomas Fay, vice chairman; David Smith, president; Shirley Rippi, secretary and Audrey Madison, treasurer. The members of the council are the cabinet, the class presidents, and two electives from each homeroom. The council sets up policies for the junior high students to follow. It also gives the junior high people experience in the solving of problems and gives them a background of government handling. FRONT ROW: C.Rohlck, J.Grage, P.Gerike, B. Mulligan, J. Anderson, M. Senior High Student Council Future Administration Meeting on alternate Mondays, the council serves as the government of the student body. Mem- bers consist of the cabinet, class presidents, two representatives from each homeroom, and five members at large. Making arrangements for a foreign exchange student for next year, sponsoring an annual dance, working on the teenage code , and setting a new magazine sales record are just a few of the very successful projects the council handled. The process of compiling a year's activities in- to one book begins with choosing the staff the pre- vious year. Those on the layout staff begin by set- ting up a dummy book. This book seldom looks like the finished product for many new ideas and improvements are incorporated into it. It must be decided what pictures will be needed, where they will be, and what size each should be. When the dummy book is completed, half of the job is done. During this time the typing staff does the recording of information. The next step was the writing of headlines for each page of the annual and the summarizing of some of the activities by the copy staff. Then began the final lap of pasting copy, trim- ming pictures, and hoping everything goes together as planned. As you may suspect, everything does not runas smoothly as it may seem. Snags which must be ironed out always develop. The force behind the staff was their advisor, Mr. Weinman. It was be- cause of his encouragement and prodding that the staff was able to give you this book to remind you of your first year in the new high school. FRONT ROW: R.SchUder, D.Kuper. J. Hagen. C. Junior Class Play November 15 and 16 were the dates that the presentation of Brother Goose , the Junior Class Play was given. Brother Goose is a delightful comedy in which Jeff Adams, the brother goose , had the responsibility of raising his younger brother and sisters. The results are quite hilarious. The eleven characters are: Jeff Adams who is about 25 and an architect by profession. Jeff was character- ized by Orrin Anderson, Carol Adams is fifteen, and is a confident, self-possessed young lady played by Ruth Beatty. Wesley Adams is about seventeen. He is always in a state of excitement---------usually over some girl. The part of Wes was played by Kenny Bjerk. Hyacinth is a ten year old tomboy. She loves football as much as she hates dishes. Hyacinth's part was played by Sue Manion. Helen is the latest of the housekeepers in the Adams' home, and was portrayed by Rosalind Beelman. Sarah, the Mason s negro maid, was played by Carol Rohlck. Peggy who is about nineteen or twenty is the saleslady, portrayed by Judy Cummings, who trys to sell Jeff a pair of socks. She appears rather lightheaded at times - -but, she knows what she is doing. Eve Mason, a young lady of seventeen from the South, is Wesley's latest interest, and was played by Yvonne Atkinson. Lenore Hudson is a stunning rich young lady, characterized by Marcia Roberts. She pretends to be interested in the cultural aspects of life, but is not wholly sincere. Mrs. Trimmer is the owner of five Wee Blue Inns. She is quite frank and never minces matters. Her part was played by Sondra King. The truck driver which was played by John Sandstede gets quite angry over one of Hyacinth's devices to bring a solution to the problem of where the football game between the Mortuarries , and the Tigers is to be played. CARDINAL CAPERS HOMECOMING The Main Event of the Year Ye Old Legends and Tales was the theme for this year's annual homecoming festival. The homecoming event opened on Thursday evening with the coronation of Queen Janice Anderson and King Mike Ormseth, a- midst the royal setting of candelabras and royal music. The fes- tive spirit reached fever pitch portions on Friday afternoon as the colorful homecoming parade wound its way through downtown Lu- verne, before a capacity crowd of onlookers lined the streets. Highlighting the two day homecoming holiday was the gridiron vic- tory of the Luverne Cardinals over the Blue Earth Buccaneers. The annual homecoming dance in the school cafeteria was reigned over by the homecoming royalty. CHEERLEADERS Rah! Rah! Rah! J. Anderson, P. Rapp, S. Manion, J. Kiebach R. Beatty, D. During the regular season, the Cards lost to Jasper by a score of 52 to 64 and to Mountain Lake by a score of 58 to 60. The third loss was incurred during the regional tournament when Pemberton pounced the Cards with a 60 to 57 victory. The Cardinals will miss their two starting seniors, Jim Wiese and Ken Naglestad.
