The first part of this book is set aside for a photo album of the various personalities that make up the life of LHS. Without the students and faculty members, LHS wouldn't be the same friendly school and also these students and faculty members make possible the or- ganizations and activities which are recorded in the last part of the book. In this book is the record of the activities and organizations that make LHS so liv- ely. Report cards are used to record the serious part of life at LHS, but into every life some joy must come and LHS has a wide enough variety of activities so that ev- erybody will be pleased with at least one. No matter how much fun you may have doing something you are, more than likely, liable to forget some part of the event; so we have tried to record, as accurately as we can , all the main events of the year. In future years we hope you will be able to look back through this book and remember exactly what happened in LHS. We also hope it will serve to guide you in the future by being a tie between the past and fut- ure. After six long weeks of ardous practice the curtain went up on the matinee, Wednesday, November 19, presented to the grade school children. Then on Thursday and Friday, November 20 and 21, it was present- ed to the public. Both nights, when the curtain rose at 8 p.m. , the LHS auditorium was filled to capacity. Sixteen year old Lexie, (Sharon Herreid), is all set to meet the boy of her dreams, Bill Hend- erson, (Robert Groth). Matt, (John Piepgras), is going to play the cornet at a rally where all of the big name band leaders will hear him. Their movie star mother, (Carolyn Bonthius), steps in and almost ruins everything because of her selfish interest. In the end she finally realizes she hasn't been fair to her children, so she gives up her chance at a lead part in a movie and becomes a true mother to her children, and lets them do what they want instead of what she wants them to do. Also featured in the cast were Delores West (Mary Jo, a friend of Lexie's), Mary Jorgenson (Aunt Lydia, woman who has raised the Fleming children), Carole Gunderson (Arden Daly, a local siren). Roger Torkelson (Mr. Holden, movie producer), and Marcia Herreid (Muriel, a daughter of Nola Fleming). 33 Back Row: P. Ruddy, C. Erickson, D. West, M. Her. reid, P. Halvorson, M. Goettsch. Among the duties of the Phi Beta, library club, are the following: shelving, checking out and repairing books, knowing where all references are located, issuing overdue book slips, and running the grade school library. Heading this organization for the 1954-'55 school year were Corinne Groth, president; Mar- lee Kennedy, vice-president; and Karla Brummer, secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Anderson is the advisor of the group. 34 E. Rober, L. Padilla, B. Bell, K. Boisen, S Manion, J. Molitor, K Jacobson. Baton Twirlers Flag Swingers M. Herreid, C. Bonthius, D. West, J. The business of the day could consist of anything from a proposed record library or repairs on the juke box to the Traffic Safety Conference, which was the main project of the year. Beaver Creek, Hills, Magnolia, and Luverne participated in this conference, which was handled entirely by members of the Luverne Student Council. Another project was the annual Student Council dance, which is always a highlight of the school's social calendar. After some appropriate remarks by Mrs. Finberg, advisor; the buzzer rings and the meet- ing is officially adjourned by the chairman, Jim McClure. Now all that is left to do is read the minutes in homeroom the following day. Back Row: G. Aanenson, R. Brandenburg, M. Ormseth, D. Schei, H. Gram- stad, D. Hengeveld, R. Pederson, P. Rolph. The Junior High Student council consists of del- egates from the home rooms, the class pres- idents, and the junior high cabinet. Under the s uper vis ion of Miss Berg, junior high principal, the council's p rojects included d ecor - ating the Christmas tree in the front hall, spon - soring one or two parties, and putting out the Echo's Echo. Junior high assemblies, the Junior High Honor Society, and a yearly homecoming float were also the work of this energetic group . The council gives the junior high people good experience in governmental work as they set up policies for other junior high students to follow. 43 The Girls’ Athletic Association Back Row: A. Olson, M. Hatting, M. Willers, V. Gla- ser, advisor; M. Nelson, S. Schmuck. Second Row: R. Nagel, C. Untiedt, J. Kiebach, M. Skewes. Front Row: S. Weed, M. Juhl, J. Barrett. Every Thursday evening aiong about 7:30 thumping, giggling sounds can be heardfrom the gym. This is LHS's energetic GAA girls, practicing for the evening's activities. Suddenly the sounds stop as Mary Willers, president, calls the group to order and the meeting begins with Sandra Weed, secretary-treasurer, reading the minutes of the previous meeting. Sitting back quietly viewing the proceedings are Miss Glaser, supervisor; and Ardis Olson, vice-president. The highlight of GAA, as always, was the girls' basketball tournament. This year the fresh- man team surprised everyone by winning a hard fought championship game from the juniors . Besides regular meetings and games, the girls sponsored a dance and a pep fest. They also took time out for a picnic in the city park, swimming at the Y. W.C. A. in Sioux Falls, and rol- er skating in near-by towns. Back Row: S. Olson, D. West, K. Mol M. Jorgenson, L. Winge, L. Under the guidance of Garland And - erson, LHS agriculture instructor, the Luverne chapter won wide honors in contests consisting of judging poul- try, live stock, crops, and parliament- ary procedure. By way of earning money they sold Christmas cards and sponsored a dance. One of their biggest yearly events was the spring banquet, at- tended by the boys and their parents . The boys also formed basketball teams and held tournament games. Beginning as greenhands, the mem- bers work their way through the de - grees of chapter farmer, state farm- er, and American farmer. The FFAboys can readily be recog- nized by their blue corduroy jackets with a gold emblem on the back. THs jacket is a symbol of Future Farmers of America everywhere you go. 45 J. Piepgras, M. What size is this picture supposed to be? or Does this go on a left hand or right hand page? were all common phrases heard coming from the Cardinal room. The Cardinal staff worked long after everybody else was gone from school. Let's meet this energetic staff shall we ? First to start work was the photography staff who included Jim McClure, JudyBarrett, and Sally Ol - son. The layout and copy of the book was composed by Mary Willers, David Hengeveld, John Piepgras, and Lulu Beck. Betty Willroth, Tanya Thompson, Marilyn Hatting, and Barbara Eitreim c ould always be found in their spare time typing the copy and identification. Also found frantically working to keep the Cardinal from going into the red was the business staff which was composed of Eleanor Hel- lerud, Roger Brandenburg, Vernon Coxnish, Or- landSievert, GlorrianKorgel, and Mary Jorgenson. Homecoming The lights slowly became dim. The silence that followed was filled with an air of suspense. Suddenly the majestic strains of Pomp and Circumstance burst forth; homecoming for 1954 had begun. First down the aisle were the page boys, James Piepgras and Stephan Rapp, carrying the crown, robes, and sceptre. The princess- es, Darlene Forrest, Janice Kiebach, and Iva Wessels from the freshman, sopho- more and junior classes respectively, were next to face the spotlights. Last down the aisle were the candidates for king and queen. They were Marlee Kennedy and Gary Stamman; Marcia Ormseth and Max Winkler; Corinne Groth and Dwayne Johnson; Audrey Smeins and Loren Petersen. A suspenseful silence fell as James McClure, chairman of the student council, stepped forward and chose vivacious Audrey Smeins as Cardinal Capers Oueen . Then amid shouts and cheers, Loren Petersen was chosen to reign as king. Angs Mohr, last year's queen, presented the new queen with a bouquet of roses. The roy- alty was then entertained by the girls' octet and a vocal duet by Paula and Gloria Gerike. The next day the finishing touches were put on the floats and then were entered in the parade in the afternoon. The theme of the parade was America at Work and Play. The GAA copped first place with their theme of skiing. The day was highlighted with the football game between Luverne and Marshall , which ended with a final score of 13-13. After the game the evening was drawn to a close with the dance with the theme of Blue Moon , sponsored by the senior class. Cheerleaders AUDREY SMEINS Vim, vigor, and vitality appeared to be the cheerleaders' motto and the school spirit rose higher at every game. There was Marcia Ormseth with her short red hair and flushed face shining brightly after each yell; Audrey Smeins with her encouraging, Come on now, yell! ; Sharon Her - reid with her shining smile; and Janice Kiebach with her danc- ing feet. For Christmas Miss Glaser, faculty advisor, purchased Smajjm, LHS's pert little mascot, and everywhere the cheer- leaders went Smajjm was sure to follow! As a pre-Valentine treat the LHS pepsters appeared in their new red and white corduroy uniforms.
