They practice dally and after school hours for a full schedule of events throughout the year. Besides the concerts and the contest this year, the mixed chorus took part In Pipestone's Music Festival. It was not a contest, but a get-together of mixed choruses of the surrounding area. The new choir robes, which were purchased last year, received a full year's use. They are peacock blue, and can be worn with sllver-gray satin stoles or white collars. The vocal department sponsored a magazine campaign to earn the money to pay for them. The vocal groups were divided Into teams with Rodney Lenseh and Jim Esterly as team captains. The salesman with the most sales was Rosemary Herman. The students with the next highest sales were treated to a dinner In Sioux Falls by the magazine representative. The organization officers this year were: Buzz Wildung, president, who con- ducted business meetings; Wayne Ensrud, vice-president, who had charge of the robes; and Phyllis Hagen, secretary-treasurer, who was the business manager for the magazine campaign. LHS Is proud of the ratings the vocal department has received In recent years, under the able direction of Miss Margaret Hanson. 37 SMALL GROUPS OPERATORS CLUB PATROL BOYS PHI BETA Front Row: R. A mystery, suspense play with sidelines of rollicking humor plus a pinch of romance constituted the successful play which was presented November 15, l6. In the LHS auditorium by the Junior class and directed by A. R. Patterson. The cast was as follows: Jerry Martin, the young atomic scientist, Jim Sher- man; Williams, gangster butler, Stan Wlllers; Mrs. Williams, gangster's wife, Jo Anne Adams; Sheriff Doolittle, local yokel sheriff, Loren Kruse; Brock, smooth- talking crook. Bill Stelnfeldt; Priscilla Ralston, Donnalee Boland. Joan Baustlan, Loma Hennlngsen, Pat Padilla, Martha Sellen, and Eunice Oldre played the parts of the confused, bewildered college students. DECLAM Winners in the local declam contest, which was held Tuesday evening March I;., in the LHS auditorium were: Pat Olson, humorous; Martha Sellen, dramatic; Roger Sherman, extemporaneous speaking; Ray Husen, discussion; Jerry Hansen, original oratory; and Barbara Smith, manuscript reading. Alternates were Annette Suurmey- er, dramatic; and Joel Green, humorous. Nineteen students participated in the competition under the coaching of Miss Marjorie Kilker, Miss Marilyn Wollman,Mr. Harold Schuchar4 and Mr. A.R. Patterson. Others participating besides the winners were: Keith Paulson, Reinhold Schmuck, Boyd Beyer; Richard Brown, Robert Tobkelson, Marcia Ormseth, Audrey Smeins, Rosemarie Dietrich, Donnalee Boland, Mary Nelson, and Sharon Schmuck. Declam work offers excellent opportunities for those interested in improving and perfecting their speech. It also aids the student to acquire stage presence and proves a value in later life as well as in the classroom. Other declamation activities include Jr. and Sr. class play and One-Act play. +- CARDINAL CAPERS THE EVENT OF THE YEAR It was a beautiful moonlit evening and In the LHS auditorium there was a tense audience full of excitement and suspense. Soon the strains of Pomp and Circum- stance filled the air and the Cardinal Capers festivities of 1951 had begun. First In the coronation procession came the court pages, Darlene Dlbbern and Ruth Beatty, bearing the crowns and robes. The princesses, Audrey Smelns, Ange Mohr, and Joyce Turner, from the freshman, sophomore, Junior classes respect- ively, were soon on the stage. Then the candidates for king came down the aisle, escorting the candidates for queen; Dale Haggard and Barbara Smith, Darrell Boyer and JoAn Beatty, Roger Sherman and Phyllis Hagen, Delbert Boyer and Charlotte Huisman. The weeks of wondering and waiting came to an end as Buzz Aflldung, the Student Body President crowned Phyllis Hagen queen, and Roger Sherman king. After the ceremonies a huge bonfire 'was lighted by the king down at the baseball field where the cheerleaders, with the band's assistance, conducted the pepfest. The theme for the floats and stunts was of historical events, and one of the finest LHS homecoming parades swung through the streets on a beautiful warm Friday afternoon. The winning float was the large tinsel Liberty Bell spon- sored by the Student Council. The sophomore skit, The Boston Tea Party , con- sisting of two boys carrying a table and having a tea party, took first place. To make Cardinal Capers of 1951 perfect, the Cardinal football team won the game with Slayton 13 to 5. After the game the Cardinal Capers Climax Dance was sponsored by the juniors.
