CARDINAL STAFF Inside the room marked Cardinal Staff Only a sigh of relief was heard, for the last page of the 1951 Cardinal was finished at last. For four months they had labored to help preserve some of the memories of events that happened in LHS during 1950-51. There was always so much to do with so little time to do it in that the Staff feared at times there would be no Cardinal. Finally, though, the last page was finished and ready to be put into its proper place. On Thursday nights especially was Room 120 active for it was on this night that the Staff met to compare and settle problems. Joan feared that the Annual was going to go into the red ; Gerrie and Wayne and their assistants, MaReese and Darlene, were having trouble with the illustrations; Alice wondered where she was going to find the space for the pictures which had to go in; Buzz was wondering when a certain picture was going to be ready; Don was worrying about where he was going to het sports action shots; LeRoy was having trouble expressing what he wanted to say in the space allowed him; Betty and Arlene were tearing out hair over the typing; while Betty, Mr. Parry, and Miss Barrett worried over the deadline and many other problems. Then came the day it was finished and sent to the printers. The Staff waited anxiously for the day to arrive when the Cardinal would come baek and they could in- spect and criticize the work which they had done. The Cardinal Staff sincerely hopes that the students and faculty who read this, the 1951 Cardinal, will be as pleased as they were at the results and that all who read it will recieve much pleasure and enjoyment from it in later years. PHI BETA Everyone who goes to Luverne High School has at one tine or another gone to the library either during their study hall or before and after school. There they find friendly faces waiting behind the desk ready to check out books, help find needed books, or perform any other tasks which they may be called upon to do. This group of people belong to Phi Beta Club whose chief purpose is to help our librarian. Miss Wollmann. Other duties they may be called upon to perform are the preparation of library bulletin boards, filing of new books and the care of the grade school library. Thanks to these people who are willing to spend their time and en- ergy working in the library books are Just where they should be at the proper time. Students who belong to Phi Beta also have various social activities besides earn- ing activity points for pay. DISCUSSION This year instead of conducting the WNAX forum as in previous years a discussion team was formed. This team discussed with a team from Washington High School in Sioux Falls the question Is the UN Doomed? . Chosen for the team were Grayce Lapic and Buzz Wildung. 37. BACK ROW L. Peterson, J. JUNIOR CLASS PLAY '51 Photo by Star Herald During the last part of October the cast for the junior class play, The Whole Town's Talking, was chosen and work was begun. For two weeks juniors were seen run- ning up and down halls carrying their play books in their hands with the hopes that a few minutes could be spared in the next class when they could learn new lines or review old ones. On November 16 a dress rehearsal was given for the grade school children. This was the first taste of the stage for most of the cast and small cases of stage fright sprang up but for the most part the play went well except for a few minor mistakes which had to be ironed out before opening night. At 8 o'clock on Friday night the curtain went up on the first performance of The Whole Town's Talking. All went well until Don Spease and Lowell Thone omitted part of a scene which everyone thought was necessary and which they had not even known they had left out. On Saturday night only one minor mishap occurred when a group of pictures which were to be on stage were nonchalantly resting on the table backstage. Arlene Jauert saved the day by rushing them on stage Just in time to es- cape a catastrophe. The plot of the play involves the rivalry between Chet Binney and Roger Shields for the hand of Ethel Simmons. A picture of Letty Lythe, a movie star, is used to make Ethel jealous. When Donald Swift. Miss Lythe's boyfriend, hears of the alleged love affair between Ethel and Chet he immediately threatens murder. A fight in the '’arjc occurs with the result that Chester wins Ethel while Swift regains his movie queen to make a very happy ending. DECLAM The declam contests are some of the high lights of the school year. Lots of hard work and practice go into preparation for these events. Miss Marilyn Wollmann was in charge of the declam activities this year. Eight facultv numbers acted a a coaches. Ihey were Mr. Carroll Crouch, discussion; Mr. A. Patterson, extemporaneous manuscript reading; Miss Marjorie Kilker, Mr. Garland Anderson, Miss C.V. Roberts, and Miss Thelma Haugen, humorous; Miss Betty Brooks, dramatic; Miss M. Wollmann, one- act play; and Mr. Anderson also coaches oratory. Forty-three students participated in this activity this year. Dear Kids, Gee, we had a super Cardinal Capers this year, even a little damp weather could not spoil it. Thursday night everything got off to a good start with a beautiful coronation ceremony. Barbara Eitriem and Mary Skewes, the court pages, carried in the royal robes and crowns. Next in the procession were the princesses—Helen Hag- gard, Mary Jane Bonthius, and Phyllis Hagen. Then in couples came the senior candi- dates for king and queen. They were Marge Hoh and Jim Achterhoff, Alice Holland, and Emery Braa, Joan Hagedorn and Ronnie Hamann, and Bev Cook and Paul Lensch. No one knew who the king and queen would be except Don Hamann, who as a representative of the Student Council was to crown the new monarchs. Everyone held their breath as Don turned to select the queen from the four equally deserving candidates. It could have been any of them. Then suddenly Alice was kneeling before us. After she had re- ceived the royal robe and crown, Don escorted Emery to Alice's side and crowned him King of the 1950 Capers. Everyone went down to the baseball field and really 'gave out' at the pepfest around a monsterous bonfire. Friday everyone dashed in and out of classes working on floats which were built around the theme— Say It With Music . We got out of school at 2:30 and rushed through the parade; so that the rain and wind wouldn't ruin the floats. The Echo took first place with the Library Club a close second. The sophomores won first place in the stunt division with their Mule Train. Even in its damp condition it was a good parade. And Happy, Happy Day we Beat Marshall. We topped off a perfect Homecoming by having a wonderful time at the dance. I hope we have lots more like it. Be seeing you. Lew Worm MANAGERS G. Remme, J. Church, D. Pitts.
