She has a most ad- mirable teaching record. She has taught everything from freshman English to Advanced Composition for seniors. Her versatility is diliicult to match. She has always gone out of her way to help her students learn by giving that little bit of extra effort that is needed. In the classroom, Miss Koch applies herself to interesting the students. She provides a new insight to the Held of English. By always seeking new ways and methods of teaching, she keeps her classes both interesting and educational. Because of her broad background with books, she is an authority on al- most any book a student wishes to read and is constantly recommending new books for her stu- dents. When she tells about a book, she makes it seem to come alive so that the students really want to read it. Besides teaching, Miss Koch, is also the faculty consultant for the Penorama, and was the sponsor of the Book Discussion Club. It is because of her loyalty and devotion to the Held of English and the giving of herself to her students, that the 1967 CRUSADER is dedicated to Miss Koch, 111 , - 1 1111 E1 111 111 1, 1- .1 11111111111 1 111 1121 11 1 1-1 fm gk 1526111 1Qs1411ssz19e111 11 11115 11 1 15 S1315-PESS ' . 1 .,,1 1-my 111 k VEKTS3??' When the Lord admonishes us to be Doers of the Word and not hearers only He is underscoring this commitment. The dedication we bring to the task of witnessing for Christ is our true measure of worth. Throughout life we search for a wider knowledge and a better understanding so that our lives may be of greater significance to others. Serving Christ through service to our fellowmen becomes the true pattern of action for every Crusader. It is my prayer that the Class of '67 continues to follow the ideal of service. With this goal you will truly be the Crusaders of '67, 6 FRONT ROW' Left to Right: Mr. R. Eggerdingg Mr. E. sickg Mr. F. Rokefeldg Mr. R. Cvaeblerg Mr W Branneky Hagenmuellerg Mr. R. Kohlmang Mr. D. Each man or group, as a section of our administration, spends many hours working out and establishing a school system for us by which we not only get the best possible academic education but also receive guide- lines for our continuing development in Christ. Many times we have a tendency to forget about these men and the job they do, so here we would like to show our appreciation to them for doing a good job of keeping Lutheran High School running smoothly. 7 Superintendent K. It seems like only a short time ago that we entered Lutheran Central as 'flittle freshmen, and became accustomed to the teasing of the upperclassmen, the jammed hallways, and the absence of showers in the girls' gym. That year our class first proved itself to be outstanding in athletics and scholastics as we were led by our first class officers: Bob Siesennop, president, John Vogt, vice- presidentg Jackie Lang, secretary-treasurer, and Larry Wahler, representative. Our only disappointment came on the very last day of school when the school picnic was rained out for the first time in Central's history. Then we were sophomores. No longer the babies of the school, we proceeded with great contidence. Our class was represented on every varsity team, and we led the school in the number of students on the honor roll. Our Valentine social, The Sweet Beat,', was a great success under the leadership of Nancy Vogt, presi- dent, Sharon Nitz, vice-president, Linda Middendorf, secretary-treasurer, and George Lueker, representative. Of course, the big event that year was the com- pletion and move to Lutheran North and the expectation of really having a HOME game. Our junior year we sentimentally remembered Central and its peculiarities and learned to appreciate what North had to offer. For the first time Lutheran High had a homecoming and, as always, the juniors concentrated on their big party for the seniors in May. By winning the magazine campaign and selling every available bar of chocolate, we once again proved our great class spirit. Led by Gary Engelhardt, president, Dave Schlechte, vice-president, Janie Selzer, secre- tary, Jackie Lang, treasurer, and Linda Middendorf, representative, we pro- duced the La Comida Fiestai' which set the high standards for those banquets which were to follow. In our last year at Lutheran, by heading many clubs and organizations and helping produce the COURIER and CRUSADER, we proved ourselves worthy of the title of seniors. Our tremendous athletes and school spirit were instrumental in producing teams that ranked high in almost every sport. The class oiiicers that memorable year were Ralph Fischer, presidentg Norm Evans, vice-president, Mike Tinker, secretary-treasurer, and Josie Gardiner, representative. All too soon the day we had dreamt about for four years came-Graduation Day. As we leave high school, we hope that we have left our mark on Lutheran High, for happily it has left its mark on us. The Christian training we have received here will continually guide us in the many years to come. The class of ,67 will always remain in their hearts Lutheran High CRUSADERS. 19 Ruth Ann Abaecherli College Prep Ruth,' Great alto tenor How do you spell your last name? Our class supported all of North's varsity and HBH teams. The participation in these sports added tremendous skill and spirit to the Crusader teams. The presence of the sophs was very evident at all the gamesg we often left those games with dry throats and hoarse voices. We also can't forget the girls of our class who gave an extra boost to the GAA varsity and HB teams. The sophomores started early in their campaign to raise money for the 1968 banquet and prom. We started something new at LHSN's Homecoming. This addition, the Root Beer Garden, was a great success. Our class outdid themselves in the magazine campaign, resulting in a tie with the juniors for first place. With these extra funds, the class of,68 can look forward to a really '5sharp banquet. After having a most successful year, every Crusader should be proud of the sophomore class and expect a lot more from them in the next years at Lutheran North. We're not really just another class of freshmen, for we are the largest class at LHSN. We are not only largest in number, but also largest in the amount of school spirit contributed. The participation of the freshmen class members shows the extent of the school spirit. The freshmen make up the bulk of the C teams for football, basketball, and baseball. The girls have also taken a large and active part in the athletics of our school through GAA. The entire class has taken an active role in the performance of school politics. The class of '70 has the important job of ushering into existence a new age of school life. The freshmen class is the greatest and is proud to be a vital part of LHSN. As always, the COURIER was on hand each month to bring the exciting news of L.H.S.N. to faculty and students alike. The staff did a fine job of reporting the news of our school in a factual and interesting manner. By doing so they accurately portrayed school life, stimulated interest in school activities and pro- moted Christian attitudes among the student body. They achieved their goals with an increased number of pictures, thought-provoking editorials, and inter- esting articles on a variety of subjects. To increase the COURIER staffs knowledge of journalism at work, they toured the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. This experience helped to put the problems and headaches of turning out a four-page paper in perspective. With a lot of hard work on the part of the editor-in-chief, the editors, the re- porters, and the faculty advisor, Miss Jan Edwards, the COURIER was able to iinish a very successful year. Senior end Tom Mack snags an aerial from Norm Evans. The 1966 Crusaders proved to be one of Lutheran's most exciting teams. Under the able coaching of Jerrald Pfabe and Richard Wallace, North ended with a well earned 6-3 record, the school's iinest since 1960, and captured third place in the ABC league. The rugged North defense allowed opponents an average of only seven points per game, and blanked three opponents. Unlike previous teams, this year's Crusaders never gave up, and this was evidenced by three come-from-behind victories and a narrow three point loss to league co-champion Codasco. This year's Crusaders leave a fine tradition of hustle, desire, and spirit for future squads. 'C FOOTBALL The 1966 B team wound up their season with a 3e4 mark. Coached by Paul Crisler, the B team provided some thrilling contests for their followers, climaxed by the narrow victory over John Burroughs, the Hrst B team victory over Burroughs in our school's history. The team should provide the varsity with some line material in order to continue in a winning tradition. C' 9' FUOTBALL This year's C team proved to be a real hustling team as they posted an im- pressive 3f3-l mark. Following in the varsity's footsteps, they became a fine defensive team. They ended up with a l-12-5 record, making the precentage points come up higher than in any season in the past. The varsity soccer team is still young and still improving. In the last game ofthe season against South, our Kickers showed the finest whole- team effort for the entire season by ending the game in a brilliant, well deserved tie. The B team which was organized into a separate soccer team this year, showed much promise throughout their season. The young kickers will be ready and able to aid the varsity next year. VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1967 Crusaders, coached by Mr. Oetting, began the season by setting a new school scoring record as they soundly beat Rosary 96 to 62. After losing to O,Fal1on Tech, Normandy and River- view, the Crusaders came back strong before the Christmas vacation by defeating Priory 82 to 63 and a strong Northwest team 65 to 60. This gave the team an opportunity to play an exceptionally tall Soldan team for first place in the Lutheran North Tournament. Playing an excellent game, the Crusaders lost by a score of 56 to 54, thereby taking second place in their own tournament. Jumping into ABC League competition, the Crusaders ripped through all their opponents with- out difficulty with the exception of Lutheran South. During ABC League play the Crusaders tied the school scoring record of 96 points again and set another new scoring record for the second time during the season. This happened in a 109 to 71 victory over Western Military Academy. The Happiness is playing McCluer in the Regional. Crusaders linished in second place in the ABC League with an 8 and 2 record. Completing the season with the State Regional Tournament, the Crusaders raced home with a 79 to 64 win over Rosary and a resounding 92 to 88 upset victory over second seeded Berkeley, before bowing to a tall McCluer team and there- by receiving a second place trophy from the Re- gional. The Crusaders outscored their opposition 71.5 points a game to 61 points. The team set a new total season scoring record of 1502 points while outshooting their opponents from the field 4276 to 40'Zi. They ended the season with a respectable record of 13 wins and 8 losses. Terry Bozzay, Chuck Girard and Lou Koch were selected to the All ABC League team and Gary Engelhardt re- ceived honorable mention. TRACK Although it was only their second season, the '67 track squad competed successfully. Lutheran opened their season in fine style, equalling their victory total of last year in half of the season, and gave a good showing an ABC League meets. The Crusaders were a balanced blend of experienced seniors and promising underclassmen who com- bined to form one of the most exciting teams at Lutheran. The team worked hard to develop their individual specialities and to build a winning track tradition at Lutheran North. Paul Choate uncorks a toss in the shot put. These include field hockey, basket- ball, volleyball, gymnastics, and softball. This gives all girls a chance to participate in athletic activities, and it is from the GAA members that all girls' Varsity and Junior Varsity teams are picked. The highlights ofthe 1966-1967 year included the Maroon and Gold class teams tournament, the Sports Festival, our triumphant victories over South in basketball and volleyball, and the annual Mother-Daughter Banquet with entertainment provided by a few talented members of GAA. So next year, if anyone wants a chance to have fun in sports, join GAA. Among the many new cheers these girls brought to our school, N-O-R-T-H and F-I-G-H-T were two of the most well liked. With our school's best interest in mind, our cheerleaders practiced many hard hours to get their cheers in the best form for the games. The halls and classrooms are no longer con- jested with students, and assignments and term papers have long since been forgotten. The sound of a basketball bouncing on the court and the crack ofa baseball bat are no longer heard. Your 1967 CRUSADER shows many of the events that occurred over the past year. It is our hope that by seeing these events you will continually be reminded of the blessings of God and your role as a Crusader. As co- editors, we would like to say that we were proud to have the privilege of editing the l967 CRUSADER. We would like to thank Miss Margaret Mehl and Mr. Jerry Simmons, CRUSADER facult consultants, along with the entir C Y CRUSADER stalf for all the time and effort they have spent to create the '67 CRU- SADER. We would also like to thank Mr. Breiding, Northis photographer, and Dou Gaubatz, student photographer. 1967 CRUSADER Co-Editors Sandy Pelle and Gary Engelhardt 8 l ffw Y I' I- f!'
