ER, ICU, regular floor work and disaster nursing were all a part of Ad- vanced Med-Surg. Instructors were Mrs. Ehrman, Miss Fincher, and Miss Huyck. Working with Dr. Vogel and all the per- sonnel of ER gave them an idea of what real emergency treatment entails. Of course, ICU was a new area too. They were able to work with modern machine- ry, see a critically ill patient make it, and increase nursing skills. Floor work gave the student an opportunity for review before ending school. They also had to plan for a disaster in Disaster Nursing. 28 GOOD RE IE FOR STATE I I r R 1 N l . 7 lj Above: In disaster nursing, students took a short trip to observe the actual scene, Below: Constant monitoring of fluids, equipment, medication, and the patient's vitals are a main part of ICU. A wing of treat- ments andfor meds gave them few leisure ly moments, several panicky ones, and many new learning experiences. Rounds with doctors, team conferences to lead, routine tasks, and making sure all was done on time is team leading. Co-Charge gave rise to endless phone calls, making assignments and transcribing orders. The real importance of team leading was learned. 27
