To the freshman student, Fundamentals in Nursing meant learning the primary and essential principles of nursing. lt meant learning that Funda- mentals was the foundation of nursing. After learning the basics of nursing, the freshmen moved to the Fundies lab to apply the newly learned principle to act- ual manual skills, such as bed making. Upon completion, they began clinical ex perience-on-the-floor training. Here the students worked with patients instead of oranges or mannequins. Following clini cal, the nursing students engaged in con ferences to evaluate their mistakes and achievements.

A LOT OF BOOKWORK l Mr, Trinklein appears to be showing his AGP class a point of interest. Encounter groups . . . dissection of a pig's heart . . . gram staining . . . KMnO4 . . . society . . . more than two male students in class. These things all have something in common - they are the various aspects of the classes freshman took at CSC. The twice-weekly mass exo- dus by car to CSC during fall quarter took the freshmen to psychology, microbiology and anatomy and physiology. Winter quarter the ASP and chemistry, and reli- gion. Classes at CSC gave the freshmen a view of college life and classes that helped them grow, not only intellectually, but also in their understanding of people outside their school and dorm. W'hile most of the class is up and about for break, Bev seems to be content to just sit still. 19

Seeing a procedure that had been only discussed before gave the students insight and understanding. Mrs. Filchak kept an eye on her girls but they were left on their own to assist with actual surgeries. Scrubbing, circulating and follow, plus a care plan made them more aware of the human anatomy and disease processes. After surgery, Cathy Booth helps transfer the patient to the cart.
