A scientific background is needed in which to build, and we gain this through Cl-IEMISTRY, ANATOMY AND PHYSI- OLOGY, AND MICROBIOLOGY. The principles we learn in classes and lab- oratories are applied in our nursing care on the floor. PSYCHOLOGY, SOCI- . OLOGY and RELIGION help us in ou.r relationships with patients, hospital staff, classmates, and others we meet as work and grow. The basics of nursing are learned in FUNDAMENTALS OF NUR SING, and MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING I, and then are applied and practiced in the clinical areas. PHAR- MACOLOGY gives us the background so we know why we are giving a drug, and what we expect it to do for our patients. SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPALS LEARNED in lectures are put to use in the various laboratory experiments. Care Studzks Augmenzf Care studies, research papers, Monday clinical conferences, and V.A. affiliation punctuate the junior year. Divided into four rotations of three months each, it involves concentrated study of the body systems, correlated with daily clinical work with patients with corresponding conditions. Four weeks of the GERIATRIC rotation are spent in studying TUBERCULOSIS nursing in ln- dianapolis. During the remaining eight weeks the junior students study body metabolism and the special needs of the aging section of our so- ciety. The SURGERY rotation was modified this year to include not only experience in surgery and the post anesthesia recovery room, but also study of the ear and fluid and electrolyte balance. Ex- perience in the operating and recovery rooms is often approached with qualms. However, it pro- vides an opportunity to learn more about the patient's total hospital experience. MEALTINLE ON MOELLERING ONE finds Theresa Schneider and Flo Myers helping their geriatric patients. axis Y usda' unior Curriculum One rotation is given to the study of ORTHO- PEDIC, NEUROLOGIC, AND EYE conditions. Moellering II provides an excellent place to gain experience with casts, traction, circle beds, and other special equipment, and to give nursing care to orthopedic patients. Other areas of the hospital are utilized to provide experience in neurology and eye. The rotation known as CU-CYN actually provides opportunity to study and work with patients with urologic, gynecologic, endocrine, and diabetic problems. Field trips to the Red Cross Blood Bank and Woodhaven, a home for unwed mothers, give occasion for learning of some community resources. With these four rotations behind them, the juniors look forward to receiving their senior stripes and a well deserved vacation. Another first was a two week Christmas vacation for the seniors as well as the juniors and freshmen. Because the summer rotation was two weeks longer than usual, it included DISASTER NURS- ING and PROFESSIONAL ADJUSTMENTS II for the whole class at the same time. Growth and development and conditions par- ticularly found in children are studied in the PEDIATRIC rotation. A wide variety of field trips enhanced the students knowledge of facili- ties and institutions for children. The OBSTETRIC rotation leads to many new and rewarding experiences as education is re- ceived in labor and delivery, post partum, the newborn nursery, and the premature nursery. A highlight of OB came when each student was on call to receive a care study patient and follow her entire hospital experience. As well as the study of legal aspects of nursing, SENIOR EXPERIENCE provides the opportunity to learn the techniques of emergency room care and intensive care of patients in the constant care unit. Participation in team nursing as a team leader, and acting as a head nurse during co-charge experience, offers practice that will help the student step from the category of sen- ior student into the position of a graduate nurse. This organization through the National Student Nurses Association built a dormitory for student nurses in Taiwan, and started a national project to help disadvantaged groups throughout the 50 states. It also voted to back a walkout of the nurses in the San Francisco area. Becoming Actively Involved in IANS was truly the theme of Mary Lowe, who was elected 2nd vice president of the state and Linda I-lawbaker, who was elected Cor- responding Secretary of the state. On the local level Norma Seddelmeyer was presi- dent of East District. Vivian Erkkinen and Linda I-lawbaker also held local offices. All too soon, it seemed, the clock struck midnight and the magical night was almost at an end. Any girl who attended the dinner-dance can call upon her memories and say that it was truly an Affair of the Heart . 76 A ja ire' de Couer VARIOUS A CTIVITIES Linda I-lawbaker and Mary Lowe shown with the trophy won in the state talent contest. i U 191 W?
