Kruse It soon became evident that tl1e Hospital was too small and could not accom- modate the increasing amount of patients and it was decided to build a new and larger hospital and the ground was broken for the same on May 23, 1905. The conierstone was laid on july 28, 1905. The work was now hastened and in the following year, on Aug. 5. 1906, tl1e new building was dedicated in the presence of a large audience. Tl1e old hospital building was now used as a residence for the 11urses. The increasing amount of patients also demanded more nurses and as the new hospital was crowded, the association, after due deliberation, decided in 1913 to purchase the judge Alden I-Iomestead. a large modern residence adjoining the Hospital to the north, for a nurses' home. and again used the first hospital for patie11ts. In 1914, an addition of eighteen rooms was built to the nurses' home and in 1918 the association was requested by the Government to train more nurses for Govern- ment service and build another addition to the Nurses' Home. The l10me 11ow has accommodation for seventy-eight nurses. The first class from the training school, seven in number, graduated in November, 1907. An Alumnfe Association composed of graduates from the school was organized Nov. 10, 1910, and meets every month in the Nurses' Home. Miss Lena Schneider. the nrst surgical nurse, left in 1907. Miss Anna lloltnzan was surgical nurse from Nov. 1, 1911, until August, 1916. She was succeeded by Miss Lucy Lauman Oct. 1. 114116. Miss Minnie Xiialker, the first principal. remained until November, 1908. She was succeeded on Dec. 1, 1908, by Miss Mary Tl. Ludy, who remained until fall of 'IQ1I. Miss Anna Holtman was principal pro 10111 for several months 11ntil Miss Anna Lauman assumed l1er duties i11 August, 1912, and remained till July 1, 1919. Ifroin a small beginning, the hospital has grown to its present size Hllfl equip- ment. The number of pupils is steadily increasing. Today it is o11e of the largest and best known schools for nurses in the city and state. The school is accredited and recognized by the State lloard of Nurse Examiners. it has enlarged its curriculum, elevated its standard, broadened its scope to meet each new demand for a more complete and well rounded education for 11urses. The hospital now has sixty-one private rooms. ten semi-private rooms, four small wards. and four large wards. During tl1e past years, one hundred seventy-three nurses have graduated from tl1e nurses training school. Forty-Eve graduates served their country during tl1e XX orld XX ar. At present tl1ere are sixty-five nurses in training. The llospital Ladies' Aid Society meets once every month in the nurses' home, and scws for the hospital.-A. M. H. 6
