Three teachers led the class. Ten years later the enrollment had increased over ten times the number. The teaching staff numbered twenty-six. At this point the State of Ohio came into the picture. The state was desirous of build- ing an inner-belt freeway through Cleveland from north to south. Lutheran High stood in its path. The school had to be torn down. It was now up to the Board of Directors to decide whether Lutheran High should continue as one school in a central location, or wheth- er it should split into two new schools, one on the east side and one on the west. After much debate, it was decided to have two schools . A campaign was held throughout the Cleve land Lutheran churches to raise money for these projects. The churches met the goal, and definite plans were then begun. Lutheran High West shows one of the re- sults of that planning. The students and fac- ulty are proud to have such a beautiful edifice It is our hope that it will always continue to serve to the glory of God and the welfare of many future generations. They were: jane Luekens, Pat Nick- el, janet jagusch and Kathy Schefft. Finally, Roger announced Jeanette Bender as the first homecoming queen of LI-ISW. The marching band, playing at Fairview High field, prepared all spectators for the appearance of Jeanette and her attendants. Arriving in the first convertible were third at- tendant Pat, escorted by Steve Kostelny, and fourth attendant jane, escorted by Ken Braatz. Then fol- lowed second attendant janet, escorted by Bob Schuster, and first attendant Kathy, escorted by Glenn Miekle . Becky Ulen, homecoming queen of '57-'58, came back to crown the new queen. Her escort was Al jahnke . All stood in awe of Lutheran I-Iigh's sweetheart, sitting on her throne in the senior class float. After the crowning ceremony, all five girls were placed on the senior float to view their domain. The team was very excel- lent in that they displayed fine sportsmanship and a good deal of knowledge of basketball skills and experience. Mr. Braun helped the boys on to a great many victories with his wise decisions and his calm overview on the prevailing situations. It seems that the Big Five pulled the guys through quite a lot. Everyone played hard and well. We must highly commend these boys for their fine display. Our choir also sang numerous selections at the Christmas assembly which many par- ents and past graduates attended. Sing- ing in chapel during the school year was also one of their ways to glorify God. Preparing for the spring concert is their major task. This was Miss Temme's first year of play direction at Lutheran. Under her guidance, comedy and suspense combined to make the play a big suc- cess. Mike Kmetz, as Detective O'- Finn, headed the cast. Karen Von Fange, the domineering landlady, Hildegard, also put on a fine perform- ance. Ken Braatz as Sergeant Kramer, portrayed rash methods of joshing O'- Finn. Don Hurd and Ken Brownlee had their share of work as stretcher bearers who always made some wise comment. Donna Lund, who played Elizebeth, was the first to die. Carol Maruna, Nettie, soon fol- lowed her, while Carolyn Hembly, as Jane Rogers, con- tinued to make a play for O'Finn. Jeanette Bender, Birdie, was constantly swooning. Lucy and Amantha QEllen Sinnema and Sue Smythy strongly admonished her. Ron Maas did not make much of a hit with the ladies as he took finger prints. This page sponsored by: HANDY ANDY MAINTENANCE 3981 W. 15'7TH 89 A lot of people came to see the momentous ground breaking of Luther- an High West. Lutheran High West started classes in September at St. Peter 81 Paul Church. We waited patiently to move into our new school. The quarters at St. Peter 81 Paul were a little small, but classes ran quite smoothly. After the first six weeks, we moved into our beautiful new school on Linden Road. The wonderful, modern facilities surely were appre- ciated. Our own student lounge became a very popular place for meetings . A well equipped home economics lab and also a new science lab made learning much easier. In November our gymnasium was completed. November 20, , 1958 was a big day in our lives . This was the day Lutheran High West was dedicated. Over two thousand people were present at this historical occasion. The workmen were soon gone from the school and everything settled down. Our large gym helped our sports program a great deal. Each day we assemble in the gym for chapel devotions. This is one of the high points in our day for we have a chance to talk to our God. This wonderful new building has given our students a blessing for whch we should be thankful. May we each thank our God and all of the people who have made this school pos- sible. WEST -L . So no one will forget That once the Longhorns take the lead, There's simply nothing that can stop The Red and White STAMPEDE! And with a charge that sounds like thunder, They will let the whole world see The kind o' go, the kind o' fight. That's sure to lead the Red and White To VICTORY! Red and White, fight, fight! Red and White, fight, fight! Who fight? We fight! Red and White, fight! Fight! FIGHT!! Mr. Katt has composed both our pep song and Alma Mater. He had also composed our former pep song of Lutheran High. The stu- dents of Lutheran West waited for the day when our new pep song would be introduced. Many hours were spent by Mr. Katt writing the words and also the music. The reaction the students had to the song was tremen- dous. Last year it was decided that the Al- ma Mater of Lutheran East and West would remain the same. Only one line of the words had to be changed. Mr. Katt composed the Alma Mater as a prayer to God. We ask the Lord to guide and direct our lives . Sincere thanks is expressed to Mr. Katt for compos- ing these songs. 53 This page sponsored by: CHEF LOUIS RESTAURANT AND CATERING SH-1-6640. 92 93 'K A . Q' xtf 1 S . -A 4 ' g S xl' lv...
