llkS :ey 15. 'rv The Kansas City Lutheran Lady Knights came in full force for the 1987-1988 basketball season. The Lady Knights began the season with a big goal set before them: STATE!! The team wouldn't be satisfied until they reached state. Their season started with several early, easy victories. The first of three tournaments provided Lutheran with its first defeat, but then the Lady Knights made a run for five more victories. After a homecoming loss to Rich Hill, the Lady Knights got their act together. Rich Hill was the turning point of the season. The team was proving to be much more patient and really grasping the man-to-man defense. In district play the Lady Knights weren't troubled too much, but three games still stood in the way of state. Braymer was almost a repeat of the close game two years ago. Grundy County didn't show the Lady Knights many problems, but then N.E. Nodaway was yet to be faced. The Lady Knights played a tight game with N.E. Nodaway but eventually won in the final seconds. The goal had been reached. The Lady Knights would be the first team ever to represent Lutheran High School at a state basket- ball tournament. Although the Lady Knights couldn't overcome Rich Hill in a disappointing first game, they still had a good shot at third place. Below: A display of the girls accomplishments. in Ha

Falling behind early in the third place game the Lady Knights wouldn't give up. ln the final quarter they reached to within six but ran out of time. Although disappointing, the Lady Knights have nothing to be ashamed of. The Lady Knights ended the year 20-6, losing only four games to 1A schools. The Lady Knights graduate three starting seniors, all of whom have played with this team for four years. Senior Debbie Moore is the only player to play in 95 games in a Lutheran uniform, and was the leader on defense. Jeri Rinne scored 9.6 points per game, and is the leader in free throw percentage at 562. Julie Savage graduates having 20 points per game, and a record setting 1535 points and 668 rebounds. The two other starters still remain to lead the team to another victorious season. Junior Dani LaMette ran the floor and handed out another season high 107 assists and 108 steals. Junior Trish Stelljes was great in her first year starting position, and will return to add her rebounding and all around play. Sophmore sixth man Beth Savage will be back also adding her rebounding and high shooting percentage. Other returning players are Juniors Lori Dopps, Rhonda Whitaker, and a great rebounding Virginia Spica. Underclassmen Nicole DeShay and Pam Mulford will also be returning to help run another victory filled season. i Vx .-., ' .in TX ,I 1 UD hi ..f4 Top Left: Dani LaMette goes in for two.
