Weil, the simplest answer can only be because of the Board of Directors and the Administration. Without these two major parts of our organization, we could not exist. The Board of Directors is made up of representatives congregation in our association. Their job is to meet the needs school, whether that is providing a new gym floor or deciding on The Administration's job is also difficult. They care about the welfare, and they work hard to see that the student's needs are met. Sometimes it might have left bitter disappoint- ments, but it has also been an opportunity for growth and new experi- ences. The first day of school had finally started for Kansas City Lutheran High School. But for the Freshmen, J uSt X , camera Shy! X ' x gf-44, , it was a new beginning and probably a day full of excitement. The second step was to make friends. This can be a frightening experience in most schools, but at LHS you find an atmos- phere that is full with friendliness. The friends that you make here will probably be your friends for a long time. For some of you, the third step is making the team. Whether it is volley- ball, basketball, soccer, or band. To Shanti Manly 2334, ,f .4-'Z' 1 1.1 , '3 ir 1. f, 4 , Nas-- make that highschool team can be a very important part of your life. Others need to make the grades. Being on the honor roll or just getting decent grades, so your parents don't ground you, is also a very important aspect. The Freshmen this year have learned what highschool is all about. There are fun times and there are bad times. But the bad times are out-weighed by the fun times. LHS hopes that your year was an enjoyable one. Egg. yyp-t, .H,,f 'ig- .,,.' They know when they are being teased, when they are in the wrong crowd, and how to live through the school year. They have learned their mistakes from their Freshmen year and can sympathize with this years' Freshmen. But being sympathetic does not stop them has appeared, at least true, the Freshmen are from teasing the Fresh Hgeeksu. This term every freshmen name. Even though it is not once, in front of called this just because they are freshmen. The Sophmores are now one year older. A year that is full of many new experiences that will junior year. The prepare them for their the upperclassmen of '89 and '9O. Being high school because you are no longer at you are not at the top where you have to underclassmen of 1988 cannot wait to be a Sophmore is probably the best year of the bottom of the ladder, and worry about life after high school. So our advice to the Sophmores is this: Enjoy this year and X start preparing for the years to come because they can be rough! 'Swat Class of 1989 The Junior class of LHS-KC contains an assortment of personalities which combine to create an impression that is unforgettable. Their enthusiasm for life spills over into every activity of the day, beginning with the first hour bell. This enthusiasm may take shape in many forms. One form may be excessive talking or another form may be a spit ball flying through the air. Whatever the form, it speaks of vitality and non-stop energy that fills the halls and classrooms with the expectation of discovery around every corner. This class of 1989 is slowly learning what responsibility AMT is all about. Instead of their thoughts always being on ball games and dates, they are starting to think about where thei future is headed. Where are they going to live and how are they going to make it in college, are a couple of questions l' that are going through their minds at this time. what the future brings is a question that each Junior thinks about. ,v Juniors Christie Welch and Mark Mellott gladly sharing eachother's company. ,XV Q. 5. Many problems start to arise when one thinks of Prom. Where? Why? How? You really start sweating it out when there is no money in the bank. Much time and money are put into one night. But when that night arrives, every- one can feel the magic and that somehow makes everything worth- while. Preparing for Prom can be a hair raising experience. With every problem occurring at once and very little time to fix it, one wonders why such a problem must happen. ia WL 121 ' , 'Q ,vig 5 I I , V , M f WW'Z 2Qf,, QS VE . Because the new gym Floor had recently been installed, the dance was a sock-hop. Many people did not know what to think about the sock-hop, but as the night wore on, these doubts were abandoned, and much enjoyment was found. This dance was the first prize in the city-wide food drive which our school won out of all the other schools in the city. Power 95 sponsored the dance, and Charlie Knight was the DJ. The Clowns had many skits this year. The HNoah's Arkn skit was probably the favorite along with the UMissing Pieceu skit, which they performed at every church. The Clowns were enjoyed by everyone and were asked many times to come back. 3 I , The Clowns puppet show was a big success. 7 Backstage at the Clown's puppet show. SA N.H.S. The Lady Knights began the season with a big goal set before them: STATE!! The team wouldn't be satisfied until they reached state. Their season started with several early, easy victories. The first of three tournaments provided Lutheran with its first defeat, but then the Lady Knights made a run for five more victories. After a homecoming loss to Rich Hill, the Lady Knights got their act together. Rich Hill was the turning point of the season. The team was proving to be much more patient and really grasping the man-to-man defense. In district play the Lady Knights weren't troubled too much, but three games still stood in the way of state. Braymer was almost a repeat of the close game two years ago. Grundy County didn't show the Lady Knights many problems, but then N.E. Nodaway was yet to be faced. The Lady Knights played a tight game with N.E. Nodaway but eventually won in the final seconds. The goal had been reached. The Lady Knights would be the first team ever to represent Lutheran High School at a state basket- ball tournament. Although disappointing, the Lady Knights have nothing to be ashamed of. The Lady Knights ended the year 20-6, losing only four games to 1A schools. The Lady Knights graduate three starting seniors, all of whom have played with this team for four years. Senior Debbie Moore is the only player to play in 95 games in a Lutheran uniform, and was the leader on defense. Jeri Rinne scored 9.6 points per game, and is the leader in free throw percentage at 562. Julie Savage graduates having 20 points per game, and a record setting 1535 points and 668 rebounds. The two other starters still remain to lead the team to another victorious season. Junior Dani LaMette ran the floor and handed out another season high 107 assists and 108 steals. Junior Trish Stelljes was great in her first year starting position, and will return to add her rebounding and all around play. The Knights won their first eleven games before losing two in a row. The Knights then got back on track winning five more, including a Homecoming win over Rich Hill. The last part of the season proved to be disap- pointing for the Knights. The Knights beat Barstow but three days later Barstow would return to eliminate Lutheran in the first round of district play. The Knights graduate nine seniors. Starting senior Derrick McKinney led the team with a season high 67 assists. David Dodson drew a season high eleven charges. Senior John Boswell led the team in re- bounds and became only the third in the boys history to score over 1000 points. Center Mark Mellott, and guard Chuck Pattison will be back to lead the team in another season. With promising play from Marc Riedl, Shawn Beverstock, and David Cowart, the team should be strong once again. Above: John against the Bottom Left Below: John Ax 9. This was only the second year of baseball for Lutheran, and the Knights posted a 9-6 record, The season didn't end until the championship game of district play. The Knights lost to Concordia by only two runs. The Knights were 8-2 against TA schools. The Knights were led by seven seniors. Seniors John Boswell, Derrick McKinney, David Dodson, Scott Gordon, and Billy Haywood have played the last two seasons with the team, but the Knights were blessed with the talent of Russell LaRue and Alan Voss for the last season. The Knights can look forward to a promising future with the experience and talent gained by some of their younger players. Not because each person was special, but because we were the last group of students to have ties to the birth- place of Kansas City Lutheran School. There were so memories there and I'm each of us could tell pretty interesting and amusing stories about our freshmen year. Not only were we scared of not being accepted future and what was in store for us. Some things haven't changed. We are still wondering about our future, but we feel we can take the strikes that life throws at us. We thought there were pressures in high school, but wait untill the UReal Lifeu comes crashing down on us. Whenever that happens, Class of 1988, realize that As the year went on, the Senior class became closer to each other.
