For their faith- ful and persistent prayers, for their long years of planning, work, and dedication, we thank them. Traditions were formed -- MAROON AND GOLDg KNIGHTSg THE CHAPEL OF THE MIGHTY FORTRESSg DAILY CHAPEL. We came together from an area that could TRULY be called GREATER KANSAS CITY. Travel became a way of life for us. We were black and white, of various backgrounds and previous schools. ' Our teachers came from Minnesota, Florida, Colorado, St. Louis, and Kansas City. We came as individuals. We became, through our common experiences of FIRSTS, a caring community, a family. To Art .1 RELIGIO At Lutheran High School-Kansas City every aspect of our curriculum and activities program centers on the love of Jesus Christ and the for- giving grade of God. In our various religion classes, this general attitude and approach becomes the focus of study. Through Old and New Testa- ment History classes, students learn the basics of Bible history and the- ology. In Worship Life and Effec- tiveness Training for Christians, students engage in real life appli- cations of their faith. Pictured above, Mr. Richard Kiesel points out to his Old Testament class the effects of the Flood on the ages of the patriarchs. Right, Mr. Rod Be- cher takes his Worship Life class on an organ crawl, a tour of area churches, to study their architecture and worship formats. Shannon Kerr, below right, peeks out from an array or organ pipes. Below left, Mr. Richard Jostes leads his class in the singing and actions of a contempo- rary hymn. , Tn' Z ' 1 ,-v LV . UCIAL TUDIE The social studies program at L.H.S. is full of variety and interesting experiences for the students. Beginning with freshmen Civics, students examine both American as well as other forms of government. In Ancient and Modern World History classes, a cultural approach to history is emphasized. Mr. Rod Becher is here presenting the vassal-lord, relationship. Below, a local sin-eater explains the popular superstitions of medieval civilizationg another guest speaker discussed African culture and displayed several African artifacts. Rf' . Sculpture and student constructed models were used to illustrate the culture of that age. A modern day monk visited the class to describe the monastic life in the medieval church. Students had their appetites for history whetted when they and Mr. Becher became Chinese chefs for a day and sampled the culinary delights of that country. in af, Y W5 Wfitfi 5,12 '77 5 iff! if ff? ..... , ,,,f , i ,f ,a My ,, THE KEYBOARD 4 2 1 1 3 4 4-FINGERS CE' 3 5 rx, 5 s. 3 i xiii-Pl-L3 , l 31 41 I 5 6 7 8 9 0 T . Mrs. Cheryl Fahle, herself a former secretary and business school teacher, began this year to teach students the fundemental typing and business skills they will need to pursue a career in this area, Many college oriented students also take typing, of course, in anticipation of the research papers they will he expected to produce as they move up the academic ladder. The language arts classes of Lutheran High School include the study of vocahulary, grammar, study skills composition, speech, and literature. The very special classroom dictionary to the le was purchased with funds donated by members of the freshman and sophomore English classes. Mr. Rod Becher took charge of organizing the library and cataloging the many volumes. Freshman Fine Arts The highlight of the Freshman Fine Arts class was the production ofthe musical drama The Clown. Todd Wetzel, in the title role, represented the Christian who is willing to publicly stand up for his convictions despite ridicule. Portraying EVIL were Jeff Barker, Daphne Hunter, Mike Jenkins, and Rhonda Greener. Below is Vernon Barrett who, as the Shepherd, gave his witness to the birth of Jesus and the love of God that he has experienced in his life. The climax of the play occurs when I renounces EVIL and declares himself a new Christian. Mr. Kiesel directed the play and Mr. Touslee assisted as musical director. Music director Jerry Touslee frequently joined in with his Renaissance Music class for a medieval jam session. Besides ap- pearing regularly in school chapel services and at open houses, the class performed publicly before al- most twenty groups during the school year. Singers Leean Pratt, Sue Kleist, Pam Stewart, Kim Neilone, and Jackie Irons were ac- companied by Mark Sandfort, Ti Arndt, Lisa Wade, and Mr. Tous- lee durlng our special Christmas service. I Q - Wm I mi., ,Kg , T?i'Q?fQf?f' L The math program of LHS-KC consisted of Modern Basic Mathematics, Algebra I, and Geometry. In Modern Basic Math students sharpened their computational skills, applied their knowledge to consumer and business situations, and were introduced to algebraic concepts. Algebra I provided students with the foundation of their studies of higher level mathematics. In Geometry students exercised their logical thinking ability as they explored the mysteries of proofs, linear and spatial relationships, and matrices. As the high school adds grades, courses in advanced algebra, trigonometry, and calculus will be added. Math department chairperson and instructor was Miss Jan Boye, seen here working with members of the Algebra I class. M THEM TIC l 5 fi? ev what lil 1 ' W Winn, 4- A! Athletic Director, math teacher, and P.E. coach was one of the sadder aspects of the sports banquet. During the past year Coach Boye has built our sports program into a high- spirited and goal-oriented program in which individual improvement and achievement came first. At the sports banquet Coach Boye received a farewell plaque from the volleyball team presented by Christina Hedberg and Pam Stewart. Escorted by Mike Morgan, Tim Smith, and Susan Kleist, Coach Boye was also surprised and delighted 171 with her festively decorated car. Most days, of course, students and staff ate lunch in the cafeteria, but when the Weather turned warm, many of the students chose to eat outside, picnic style. Tim Smith, Pam Stewart, Julie Leimkuehler, Susan Kleist, and Christine Hedberg sure seemed to enjoy the warm sun and fresh air, Very often, teachers like Mr. Becher, Mrs. Sailors, and Miss Boye used their lunch tim to discuss school activities as well as to socialize with each other. ,, Q i, p .,,,5, ,, f1,j.4,7,' ' I 136459: f- ,. DANCE. V,-A D.J. Jeff Barker, assisted by Tim Smith, spun the chatter and whirled the platters at each of Lutheran High School's Student Council sponsored dances. The dances were an ideal opportunity for many of the students who lived in different parts of the city to get together for fun and frolic. Clinton Clark, below, posed with a quest he brought to one of the dances. Shandy Ludwig and Randy Stohs really rocked away the night.
