IT'S FOOTBALL David Manley Even though the football team's rec- ord was 2 and 7 overall, the Crusaders played with the theme: UIt's not if you win or loose, it's how you play the game.H The Crusaders are looking forward to next season hoping it will be more successful. Some of the highlights of the season were the wins over Alden Hebron 26-O and North Boone, in a very close 12-6 victory. Other games of interest would be the heart breaking homecoming loss to Kirkland, in a 22-20 overtime game and the 27 yard field- goal by Ben Brooke against South Beloit. This fieldgoal was the only points scored against them in conference play. The team members that were selected to the Trailblazers All-Conference Team were: Jim Hennig and Steve Nonnemacher for off- ensive team, John Childress for defensive team and Craig Lehman for honorable men- tion. Check out Lutheran Higlfs three volleyball teams. They consist of freshman, sophomores, and varsity girls. The freshman team has great promise, with their record of 5 wins, 3 loses, and 6 ties. Miss Erhardt, coach of these twelve girls has done a fine job in their volleyball development. Sophomore and varsity squads were coached by Mr. Wolfgram. Twelve players, made up the sophomore team. They finished with a record of 8 wins and 9 losses. The varsity squad completed the season with a record of 9 wins and 13 losses. Nine players make up the varsity team, four of them being seniors. No matter if the girls won or lost, they all enjoyed playing volleyball, and are now looking forward to next year. 4 HOMECOMING FEVER Beth Mannino Auctions, banners, balloons, and rowdy cheering were all symptoms of the homecoming fever caught by Cru- sader students in September. The an- nual mania was highlighted by the royalty coronation Friday and the football game Saturday followed with the ever popular dance. Pep Club mandated appropriate dress for the week and Monday stu- dents dressed in crazy attire: many chose to wear their duds reversed or backwards. Late in the day, stu- dents scrapped up schackles to pur- chase their favorite freshmen and dreamed of duties they would require of their indentures. Garbage sacks, mini skirts, holsters and cowboy boots were worn by many students on Tuesday, as it was cowboy and punk rock day. Mrs. Gjestvang came down with a case of homecoming fever as witnessed by her half black, half white hairstyle. Tuesday, freshmen obeyed their owners as many were seen crawling down the hallway in full drag o Wednesday, WHappy Days? returned to LHS. Reborn were the poodle skirts, greasy hair, pony tails and bright red lipstick. Mrs. Corneilson led the way with a ubrightn smile. Thursday was spirit-filled purple and white day as the students showed their loyalty to Lutheran. Football players, cheerleaders, pom pon girls and students donned their purple and white in expectation of the spirit award for their respective classes. the week, a transformation hallway took place. Each class decorate a section of the hall During of the was to way in a newly formed homecoming com- petition. 5 Friday, the halls were filled with glamour girls and handsome beaus as dress up day was Specif' ied by Pep Club. After school, a special pep rally heightend the spirit of the team, and the seniors won the spirit stick. The overall spirit award, however, went to the class of '85. That night, the an- nual Talent Show recognized the ab- ilities of various Lutheran High students. Coke drinking, ice cream eating, and three-legged races were popular events with the crowd. At the end of the evening, John Child- ress was chosen homecoming king, and he crowned his queen Barb Oelke The highlights of the week, the football game, turned out to be a disappointment as the Crusaders fel to the Kirkland-Hiawatha Hawks during the last minute of the game, no sign of sorrow Later, however, was seen at the annual homecoming dance. nAnthemf provided the music and the students provided the fun as the dance was a big success. S i W ti, 'gif YQ 'ef '5f, wax , READY T0 CHEER Valerie Allman 'Hey, are you ready to cheer?n The Crusaders are here. The 1982-83 season held many changes and many additions to the cheer- leading squad. One of the major changes in the make-up of the squad, was the fact that there were nine on the squad. The cheerleaders had many fund raisers to pay for the new uniforms. The varsity cheerleaders consisted of Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. Melanie Fordell and Barb Oelke were the two Seniors, Julie Kerestes, Tracey Oellig, and Beth Mannino were the Juniors. Valerie Allman, Beth Cunningham, and Angie Johnson were the'Sophomores Shirlee Peterson was the alternate for the varsity squad. To help the varsity squad in practice, Marge Lake, one of the Crusader fans, volunteered her time and talent. She gave the squad a new aspect of cheerleading. A new look was added during basketball season. There was a Freshmen squad added to cheer for Freshmen basketball and the Sophomore Tournament. It is hoped that the members of this squad will try-out for varsity squad next year. Those on the squad were, Michelle Dettman, Nancy Dierking, Shannon Enderson, Debbie Koser, Lisa Sweeny, and Beneta Weatherall. The advisor for both squads was Miss Burch. She continued to work to bring the squad closer together to create an atmosphere Q full of spirit. 6 PEP CLUB IS FANTASTIC I Lorraine Klinger b Where does that school spirit come from? Whose responsible for getting Lutheran High all pepped up for the 'Big Game?' Don't you know it's Pep Club. You say you want to know more, like who is in it, and what does Pep-Club do? Pep Club is just what it sounds like, a group of students that want to add a little thrill to the school. It's a place to make friends and then go to all those wild football and bas- ketball games. Pep Club always plans a couple of suprises for the school during homecoming week. Among these suprises were an ice cream eating contest, and three legged races. They also made the banner the guys bombard through on home games. Who helps run this group of explo- sive students2 Miss Erhardt is the ad- visor and the group officers are Pres- idents Jerry Cazaniga, Vice-president: Chris Mueller, Secretary: Tracy Oellig 5 and Treasurer: Bonnie Henning. HALF TIME. Krcxs V' Y Sue Meyer Bright smiles, high kicks, and lots of purple and white were the order of ' the day. The Lutheran High Pom Pon squad received help from YMCA choreographer, Carm Rongere and the Rock Valley Pom Pon girls. On December L the squad attended a spemial clinic hosted by the RVC squad: Captain Lisa Robertson led the girls, to an exciting season and was pleased with their overall performance. 7 HAVE GAVEL WILL TRAVEL Rob Davidson One might ask, nwhat more can such an unbelievable, stupendous, titanic, dazzling, noble, brave, honest, good- looking, and modest organization do than they have done in the past?n A lot! After all, lets remember the famous words used by President Carter in an address to the National Institute-for the Chronically Academic. He stated n...in these days of trying times, one must lock to the true organiza- tions, those which are undervalued, overworked, and fun-loving.n I'm pretty sure these were his words, but what the heck, we know he was referring to the LHS Student Coun- cil. Yes, one should realize that much was done and much will be done.. Behind the direction of President Tom Wachter and advisor Mr. Dale Wolfgram, the Student Council has brought us many activities such as the new student get-together, bon- fire, movie nights, and our ever famous dances. The Student Council is the gov- erning body of students that arrang- es various activities. 3 8 THATS THE WAY THE BALL BOUNCES David Manley The ball didn't exactly bounce their way. With a 3-23 record, the varsity basketball team was plagued by fouls, bad defense and a slow offense through-- out the season. In the first game of the season, four out of the five starters fouled out in the last quarter. They lost that game to Winnebago 38 to 91. In their first win, the LHS basketball team dominated Alden Hebron from the tip- off and this dominance continued to the final quarter, for a 73 to 49 final score. The other two wins were the 52 to 45 win over Byron and the 68 to 66 win over North gow Boone. Both these games ended in a thrill- fl ,ng ing second effort try which won the game. nfglf' A thanks to all the fans for coming to R 455 the games and supporting the LHS Crusadrs K g Basketball Team. bg XQNC. s rf' sixty A No W 13313. Beliot 9 56 90 Pecatonica PLAYERS... NOT QUITERS David Manley Hwhen the going gets tough, the tough gets going? That is the motto of the fresh-soph basketball team, who ended up with 10 wins and ll lost record. This was mostly due to their difficulty in getting the rebounds and the bad passes. Overall the team lacked in height, with only three people over six-foot but they made up for this with their quickness and ability to make the outside shots. They also did not quit when they were behind: they just stayed in there and played. The team's well executed defense was very good, it caused a lot of turnovers and it helped them in a lot of critical games. The fresh-soph started their season with two exciting wins over Beloit Cath- olic SO to 49 and North Boone 59 to 49. In the Beloit game Lutheran was behind until the last quarter. With only 8 sec- onds left, the teams were tied and the Crusaders were up at the freethrow line. That shot was made and the Crusaders won the game. W The Crusaders took third in the Peca- tonica Tournament and according to coach Dobler they'had an extremely good fresh- man team and a lot of outstanding indiv- idual sophomores, among them was Mark Poellot who scored 194 points, Chris Meyer scored 244 and Scott Johnson scor- ed 103 points. Overall the whole team did very well. 5295 Opponent 50 49 Beloit Catholic 59 49 No. Boone 49 A 56 Ashton 64 S5 Faith Tabernacle 56 69 Christian Life 40 60 Harvard 31 57 No. Boone- 56 50 Durand 10 Home Opgonent 74 58 44 34 66 33 36 48 45 59 51 29 26 30 40 51 64 51 38 55 31 50 40 65 33 52 57 43 48 58 61 69 45 39 36 45 54 34 33 48 52 Alden Hebron So. Another basketball win for Lutheran High girls has taken place!W These words sou ded S out of 18 games played by Lutheran High girls fresh-soph basketball team. The team put in many hours of practice to achieve their victories. Miss Danielle Ehrhardt, the team coach, used Roberta R nberg's scoring and rebounding techniques, and Nancy Dierking's dribbling and ball control to lead the team to victories over teams such as Alden Hebron, and Christian Life. A highlight game of the season was played against Durand. Roberta Runberg scored 32 points and Lutheran High defeated Durand 48 to 28. A LEG RIDE TO THE MAT Kurt Elling They strove for excellence. They tried to be the best possible wrestlers. They were the Crusaders' wrestlers, and they were proud of it. The fans and the boosters also showed their pride by cheering the team on as they competed against Durand, Stillman Valley, Mount Morris, Alden Hebron, Winnebago, Marengo, Richmand Burton, and Northwest Academy. One thing is obviously missing from the set of words. You said it...BASEBALL. Yes, along with the flowers, baseball blo ms with spring. The Crusaders knew that they were in for another tough season this year from the start. A new year brought some exciting new challenges for coach Dobler and the team. One of which was the team's independence from any con- ference. Along with the independence came an added obstacle of playing the bigger Rockford area schools. ' The season started out slowly with a nu ber of rained and snowed-out games, but the Crusaders gained momentum as the season rolled along. Outstanding pitching by Todd Wilson, Mike Dierks, and Mike Mcxinstry anchored the team's performances throughout the year. Craig Lehman added the extra power at the plate for the team to be- come fierce compeditors. This year there were nine returning starters, and with many coming back next year, the Crusaders look forward to another successful season. 5 6'.. ' 1 , I' j . The ability to show these talents is a talent in itself. A select group of students at Lutheran High School have the ability to show their talents in the art and journalism fields. In order to recognize excellence in these fields, the National Art Honor Society and Quill and Scroll have been established On Friday, February 25, three new s- members were added to these societies. Shawn Reid and Bruce Barnu were inducted into National Art Honor Society, while Beth Mannino was inducted into Quill and Scroll. Beth is now the only member of Quill and Scroll, where Bruce and Shawn joined Debby Walker, Julie Ker- estes, Sandy Kufahl, and Neal Rhodes in Lutheran High School's chapter of National Art Honor Society. 1 HONORED SOCIETY I Beth Mannino Learning to bring out the best in yourself and others combine to make- up the characteristics necessary to become a member of the National Honor Society. Among these characteristics are the desire to excel scholastically 0 N by setting goals, developing morals, hard work and determination. Membership is based on acedamic success, leadership, truth, loyalty, initiative, judgement and friendship. Selected students who posses these qualities are inducted annually at a candlelight ceremony. This year, the induction was held on February 25, and seven new members joined the four existing members. These new members were: seniors, John Childress, Lisa Robertson, and Todd Wilson, and juniors Bonnie Hennigz Kristy Iverson, Julie Kerestes and Beth Mannino. Installed with these members was the hope for continuing success and achievement. 16 HOW GREAT'S TRY ART Kurt Elling The artistic endeavors of talented LHS in several talent competitions throughout students were displayed the year. Their art work proved once again their ability to compete with schools much larger and much better equipped than LHS. The many awards given to these students are a tribute to their wise use of God given talents. There were thirteen students on the staff, under the direction of advisor Mrs. Corneilson. The two co-editors were Kristi Iverson and. Tom Wachter. Two artistic students tried their hands at cartoons, they were Clark Childress and Shawn Reid. Shawn was also their literary editor Other staff members included: Dave Bieck as lay-out editor, Keith GeRue as the Printer, and Ron King as Sports Editor. The Reporters were: Sandy Detrick, Dris Moellor, Ann Polzin, Randy Pope, Roberta Runberg, and Tracy Tyler. There were a couple of donations made to help out the staff. The Iversons' donated a Strip Printer. The Strip Printer is used to print the headlines. With the help from the Bidcks, the staff was able to have Borg Warner's print the paper for free. With all the workmanship of the staff they were able to publish a very informative paper. The staff managed to keep everyone who read the paper up to dat! on the happenings at Lutheran High School. w 9 A M355 ,W 4 'lf34SQ245ffx A 6 ' 18 MAKE YEARBOOK YOUR BOOK Tim Payne You never know where they'll turn up. They're out on the streets selling ads, they're in the classroom working on layouts, or they're wandering the halls selling candybars. It's a bird...it's a plane...no, it's a yearbook staff member. Again this year, the Lutheran High School yearbook staff worked together to create an exceptional annual under the leadership of advisor Mrs. Uram, and editor Beth Mannino. The staff teamed up with Taylor Publishing Com- pany and their representative Lisa Stafford to produce this years' book In addition to the students that worked on carefully planned layouts, there were others who spent time during and after school, selling candybars to raise extra money for the class. The regular yearbook staff includes: Julie Kerestes, Beth Mannino, Lorraine Klinger, Becky Galster, Sue Meyer, David Manley, Tim Payne, Valerie Allman, Rob Davidson, and Steve Swanson. The students who helped raise extra money were: Chad Brazle, Mark Weidner, Cindy Latzke, Brian Meyer, Kris Morse, and Teresa Powers. Although most of the staff was inexperienced at the beginning of the year, they were eager to learn and soon showed the savvy of seasoned staff members. Q :fLfQ:Ql Q .. It may vary from classical to rock, country to the blues, and jazz to songs of praise. The choir at Luth- eran High School best describes the last category. T Under the direction of Miss Burch I the choir practiced for many per- . year. formances throughout the school During the first semester, much of their time was aimed toward the Christmas Concert. This annual was held on Saturday, December 18, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.' The theme to the concert was nHark the Glad Soundu, and such a glad sound it was. Also during the first semester the choir sang on Sunday mornings at many Lutheran churches. As like the first semester, the second semester was aimed toward the annual Spring Concert. This year's concert was held on May 7th and 8th at Lutheran High School. Also during second semester was the Con- ference Festival. This is where all the choirs in the Trailblazer conference get together and form a mass choir. The Lutheran High Choir has brought joy to many nursing homes and churches throughout the year. They have showed great talent and are appreciated by everyone who hears them. event ' an f 1 ff 'la Ill in 1 llllh 1 ' , ,, -1- ' --1-1 'J xx 'ff SSL EXHILARATING AUXILIARY Julie Kerestes Hard work and determination. These are words that well describe the members of Ladies Auxiliary. The hard work describes all the time and labor put into the Holiday Ba- zaar and the Crusaders Thrift Shop. These fund raisers show much deter- mination to help Lutheran High School with their debt. The 1982-83 Holiday Bazaar was held on November 13, and showed great profit. The ladies put many hours into the making of food and crafts. These products were sold along with donations from churches and families, and the profits were well worth the effort. Another money maker, also being a service, is the Crusader Thrift Shop. This Ugarage-salen type of organization helps the community along with provid- ing work study grants for students of Lutheran High School. Retail items. are sold at the Crusader Thrift - Shop and the profits go to the school. The products sold are all donated from the staff and friends of L.H.S. Although these are important fund raisers, the Ladies Auxiliary helps L.H.S. in another way. Every Thursday, the women serve lunch to the and falculty of L.H.S. These include such menus as tacos, spagetti, lasagna, hamburgers, and chicken sand- wiches. The women make these lunches and are sometimes taken for granted by the students. The ladies put in their time for the benefit of the school. Thank-you ladies for what you've done and keep up the good work! 21 CRUSADER AIDERS Rob Davidson Crusader aiders to the rescue! Held at the Clock Tower Inn Convention.Center, the prom also provided the seniors with a time for reflection on their high school years. Couples danced to the nusic of 'Anthem,u on May 21, 1983, from eight until midnight. Throughout the evening, they refreshed themselves at the punch fountain and snack table. Parents visited the festivities and took pic- tures. Contrary to previous years, couples rushed home to get plenty of sleep. This was in preparation for post prom activities which included a special morning chapel and a trip to Great America. To finance this big event, the junior class worked hard to raise sufficient funds to produce a successful prom. They held a spaghetti supper, sold cheese and sausage, and served lunch for the students. A great deal of pre- ' paration and planning culminated in a wonderful evening full of friends, fun, and memories. GET YOUR HOT LUNCHES HERE! A Spirit for Living We dedicate this page to Sandy Kufahl for her courageous struggle this past year. Because of an automobile accident in July. Sandy suffered from a serious injury to her brain which required surgery and months of extensive rehabilitation and therapy. She improved to such an extent that she was able to take art and English classes here at Lutheran High School while continuing individual tutoring at home. Starting second semester she was able to take on a full schedule and continued to show great improvement. Her faithfulness is admired and her spirit for living is cherished. Sandy, we love you and pray for you always. YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION! . 'li S- f f 'ff' . w e 'Nm m iw., Q :ew w 3?
