Lange breaking ground for Lutheran High School North on October 21, 1962. IN A PPRECIA TION Dr. Paul Lange, as students of Lutheran High Central, we would thank you sincerely for your many years of faithful service to the Lutheran Association for Higher Education. When we realize that you were one of the first men to create the school that we now attend, we are very, very grateful. We are also thankful for your part in creating two new Lutheran high schools and making them a dream come true. WV e hope that this small token of deep appreciation will serve as ai reminder of your many Christian endeavors in St. Louis. 4 Miss Irmgard Koch, teacher at Lutheran High School Central since 1949. DEDICA TION This is your yearbook, Miss Irmgard Koch. Since your first year of teaching ex- perience in 1920, you have led your students in various fields of education. After teaching in Wisconsin and Arkansas, your journey on life's road brought you to the state of Missouri. Here, after one year of teaching in elementary school, you came to Lutheran High School Central in 1949. Being qualified to teach English, social studies, and speech on the high school level, you have directed the students here in these fields. You now hold the position of English Department Chairman. But even more than this, you have helped us and other students develop our Christian personalities through your dedicated service to that calling which is high- er than just one of teaching English. We, your students, the teachers, and the alumni are deeply grateful to you for this personal interest which you have taken in each one of your students. 5 V. VV--V1-FW -- VVVAVSQQVVV- Va-Vw CULTT AND STAFF The faculty of Lutheran High School Central has done a basic duty this past year by following the guidance of Psalm lll, verse 10, which says 4'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdomf' In this, the teachers and other administrators have strived to enrich our spiritual lives as fellow Christians. There remains yet another duty, however, and that is, of course, the teaching of academic skills. VVith- out the knowledge gained by their patience, understanding, and help, both in class and in their spare time, we could never succeed in life as stewards of our time and talents. In addition, the faculty sponsor enough outside activities to keep us busy for the entire year. However their guidance is essential in the success of any organi- zation. And so we would thank them for a wonderful year of academic advance and Christian growth, all in Christ's name. VVe are thankful to the Board of Trustees for providing us with the excellent Christian education which we are receiving, Together they have spent countless hours working to improve our high school system. These hfteen men, have labored hard and long to give us the best possible education. VVe are most grateful to all of these people for their concern and efforts in giving us the Christ-centered education which will be a lasting influence on our lives. Board of Trustees from left: E. Absent: Mr. Kermit C. Meyer Q Principal Dear Friends, Graduation is a time of mixed feelings and emotions. One feels regret at the loss of many happy moments shared with classmates. Joy is experienced as one reflects on the feelings of satisfaction over accomplishments of the past. Ahead lie the responsibilities and opportunities of the future. As you enter upon this phase of your life, be assured that the prayers of your parents and your teach- ers go with you. Your diplomas certify that you have met the standards for graduation. We are sure that with the help of Christ, our Lord and Savior, you will also meet the standards of life and faithful service to God, church and country. Lutheran High Central bids you farewell. COOKS: From left to right - Mrs. Clara Weber Behind the scenes in our school, several groups of people contribute a great deal of effort to keep up itis maintenance. Our custodians pick up after us and keep our school building in the best possible physical condi- tion, both inside and outside. The kitchen staff works hard to provide us daily with a hot lunch and then clean up the cafeteria after each lunch period. Unfortunately we are not always aware of the great effort which goes into the maintenance of our school. We all owe a great deal of gratitude to these hardworking people 'for their services. 16 Mrs. Ethel Kroeter, Mrs. Bertha Longhauser, Hen- ry G. Hartwig. CUSTODTANSZ From left to right 7 Edgar E.. Frentzel, Elree Todd, William O. Popp. CAMERA SHY: Mrs. W. O. Popp OFFICE STAFF Inside the front offices of our school are three very hard working people. These individuals must keep a record of absences and tardies, type the daily bulletin, answer the phone and many other duties such as these. Without these women to do the heavy office work, our school would be very limited in its work. Miss Lois Kasten, Mrs. Betty Mueller, Mrs. Ruth Roschke. BOOKKEEPING STAFF Since we go to a private high school, the amount of work required of our book- keeping staff is tremendous. Our tuition payments are only a small part of the work which they do. The L'Get Acquainted Party first brought a group of shy, unacquainted students together as the freshman class. In our class elections we chose our officers: Gary Ellerbrock, president, Paul Golba, vice president, Lauren Black, secretary, and Pete Hoyer, freshman representative. We braved homework, joined in extracurricular activities, met our Hrst school picnic, and finally emerged as sophomores. Led by our officers: Pete Hoyer, president, Paul Golba, vice president, Karen Lee, secretary: and Jim VVolf, sophomore representative, we began our sec- ond year. As veterans we ventured forth into teams, cheerleading, chorus, GAA, and various school clubs. Looking forward to the responsibilities of our junior year, we staged a class car wash and had a picnic just for fun. With our new title, junior, came many responsi- bilities. Preparation for the junior-Senior Banquet was the foremost class activity and working hard for us were our president, Pete Hoyer, our vice president, Jim Wlolf, our secretary, Miriam Lang, our treasurer, 4 ' Q Class Officers. Left to Right: Walt Warneck, Senior Representative g Karen Lee, Secretary-Treasurer, Pete Hoyer, President, Frank Ollinger, Vice- President. Karen Lee, our representative, Lajren Black, and the sales and banquet committees. lBy winning the magazine campaign and by selling chocolate, and chocolate, and more chocolate, we successfully fi- nanced the Roaring Twenties Banquet. The dining hall of Concordia Seminary was amazingly trans- formed into our Hspeak-easy. With the banquet past we looked enthusiastically to our senior year. The travels of a senior class we found to be di- versely packed with activity. Chosen to be class offi- cers were Pete Hoyer, president, Frank Ollinger, vice president, Karen Lee, secretary, and Walt Warneck, representative. We heartily welcomed to our class Glaudia Schmidt, foreign exchange student from West Germany. Studies, college, and vocation de- cisions, work on Crusader and Courier staffs and on senior committees, rings and pictures, and class parties all contributed to a busy year as seniors. Upon graduation our journey through LHSG was com- pleted. In the future our memories will be souvenirs, our education will be a foundation, and the Master of our school will always be our Savior. kw,,,,,g?Q gi l ,M Class Sponsors, Lett to right - Mr. Visser, Miss Guenther, Mr. Wallace. Mr. Kirchhoff. :ix Entertainment Committee Rena Moeller - Chairman. Entertainment-Project Committee Rich Vedder - Chair- man. Publicity-Project Committee Carol Ahlschwede - Chair- man. One of the goals of the 1962-1963 senior class has been to be more organized. This particular senior class has tried to distinguish itself by being the most organized senior class from LHSC. Four commit- tees, instead of the usual three, were developed to increase efiiciency. However, we can't take all of the credit. Our faculty sponsors have greatly aided and guided us. Still, the students have been ex- tremely energetic and hardworking. The Entertain- ment committee sponsored the successful Mardi Gras party. The Entertainment-Project committee were all excellent buzzbook salesmen. The Publicity committee has made the senior bulletin board a valuable source of senior newsg historical, baby pictures, and educational, college. Likewise, we participated in school activities and helped vu -- keep it in good working order. Our rep made sure that our voice I ' ,QM-A ' 1 was always heard in the Executive Board. Barb Hoyer Secretary . . . Martha Austin We were all really scared of high school at first, but LHSC turned out to be not so bad a place after all. We soon got into the swing of high school life, joining GAA, Pep Club, freshman chorus, and choosing our own class officers and student council members. We surprised everyone with our school and class spirit, and proved we really knew our stuff by actually beating the BIG SENIORS in the annual Magazine Campaign. After the first weeks of getting accustomed to lockers that simply would not open, mean upperclassmen, and Mr. Ahlbrand, we settled down to our studies and school activities, and became, at least as far as welre concerned, great members of a great student body. ,W A Rich Ahrens A i'it Linda Albers , ,A tt, .K ,S , . TOM ROW: Gray, Schcnks, Timm, Richter, Baum, Holt, Entering into its fourth year of ABC League competition this past fall, the Varsity Crusaders met some of the roughest competi- tion in recent years. Although more boys participated this year than during the previous seasons, the team was unable to produce a winning season. One win, against Wellston, 13-6, left the seasonal record at 1 and 7. The coaching staff this year consisted of Wayne Vogelsmeier, as head coach, and William Ahlbrand, as line coach. 53 5 , I s E55 3 'S 9, wegmvwq We-g-Miva -,gan ,IGM- 'Sa gd!! ,sf WW M AQ4sW s-gf Q W2 '-X Af V+ N at is -F f' ,.-It , ,., zf' I.':AA -lll Qvrg .':- 3 iiv V -4, :- , ki.: e E53 if ,-,. ,. 4 ,, , 5, -i s , ..-ff. The Crusader team, more commonly known as the Road- runners, was undefeated in league competition and only lost once to the state ranked Jennings team. The best meet was against Priory as the Roadrunners shut out their team, the first time any team has been shut out by LHSC in the history of cross-country. VA RSITT BASKETBALL Coaches Gerald Pfabe and Lou Schroer. Although the 1962-1963 Varsity basketball team ended the season without a good record, anyone who attended the games will say they got their share of excitement. Nine of the games the cagers lost were by four points or less. Coach Lou Schroer said after losing the last game against South by one point, i'We can't win for losing! The boys did a fine job of playing basketball and keeping up a high spirit even though they lost some heart breakers. This yearis team had only four seniors. This means that most of the boys who played this year will be returning next year. With all the experience and action the boys have had this year, they should be ready to get a winning record next year. 58 Walt Warneck prepares to get Denny Siesennop,s rebound. 'CBJ' TEAM This year, the HB team has shown the rest of the school that it can compete well with about any of the HB3 teams in St. Louis area. VVith a fine record the HB team proved that they were good basketball players. While they took a tie for second place in the ABC League with Country Day, they ended up with a 4-1 record in non-league play. Coach Gerald Pfabe did a very line job of bringing the boys from freshman year to play the diiqerent quality of basketball that the BU team plays. He should be complimented for this. As these boys grow into varsity material, they hope to take the record of the 1962-1963 season with them. LHSC SCORES RITENOUR ..... NORMANDYf PRIORY ............ O'FALLON .......... LUTHERAN SOUTH . Coming right from grade school, the boys could not get used to the style of ball played in high school. After a few games how- ever, they proved themselves to be good players. STUDENT CO UNCIL im Sauer - Student Council President with Miss uengel f Faculty Advisor. Realizing at the beginning of this year, that in many ways the Student Council was facing both one of its most prom- ising and one of its most challenging years, a careful look was taken at how the many new problems might best bc handled. VVorking overtime during the last weeks of sum- mer, the executive board carefully worked out a plan to overcome the problems as well as to take advantage of the new opportunities. Understanding that in order for the year to be a successful one the council itself had to be im- proved, the problem of making it as efficient as possible was tackled first. The results of this realization were seen in the training program for the newly elected representatives, and a new attendance rule. Other changes were also made, the result of which was a new constitution, the first in five years. After the council became a closely knit group of hard- working representatives, the many activities of the year gradually took shape. Chapel collections rose to a height not matched in many years previous, due to the efforts of the welfare committee. Several fine parties were planned and carried out by the social committee, the German and the soccer socials being two. The spiritual life committee and the special Christmas committee did an especially fine job of making the Christmas and Lenten seasons very mean- ingful ones. These are, of course, just a few of the commit- tees. There were over twenty in all, and their work was the backbone of the council. Withotit the combined efforts of them all, the many projects in the minds of all could never have become realities. Underneath all this, the entire coun- cil benefitted from a deeper understanding of Christian leadership and responsibility. The CRUSADER staff and Mr. Carl Yochum, our faculty sponsor, have worked diligently to make yourbook more than an ordinary yearbook. We realized that never before or never again would another book be published exactly like the 1962-1963 CRUSADER, that it would be difficult to make the CRUSADER worth its uniqueness, but we wanted to give you a yearbook which was better than the cookbook formula of other yearbooks. To turn our idealism into realism we tried to consider what everyone would like to be able to remember about his freshman, sopho- more, junior, or senior year. With all these ideas in mind we began the physical processes of producing the yearbook. We hope we have accomplished our goal and have given you some- thing you will cherish. We hope that Lutheran High School Central will be one of your fondest and most meaningful memoriesiin life. That is why we publish this CRUSADER. It is to call forth in your mind all the wonderful recollections of high school. The theme is set in the time of the original Crusader and the book is dedicated to Miss Koch, who has taught us, as seniors, most about the life and time of the early pilgrims and crusaders. And iso, in closing, I, personally, would like to think that this yearbook will help alliofrpyou on to becoming better Crusaders through Christ by obeying the Crusader Call. May God bless each one of you forever. .
