Looking back, vve recall many ot the tine moments ot Christian tellovv- ship which vve have shared. During the past year, We have realized the importance ot school spirit in making our lives at Lutheran High the best possible. What is school spirit? It is enthusisastic student cooperation and participation in such things as supporting Student Council activities, athletic teams, and school functions. Without the able assistance ot the taculty in directing our endeavors, our goal ot strong school spirit could not have been attained. As Christians, we realize that the love ot God was the inspiration for all our efforts. Through the yearbook, vve wish to recapture the highlights of the year in which school spirit has played such an important part. Eve 3 Dedication Twelve years ago the dream of a Luth- eran High School in St. Louis became a reality. This was accomplished only after many hours of concentrated effort on the part of a great many dedicated individuals. Among the most prominent ot these workers was Ivlr. John Grundmann. He was also one of the origirial members of the board of trustees, and played an important part in setting up thepolicies and curriculum of the school. His taithtul service these past twelve years will be gratefully remembered by the entire Lutheran High family. Therefore, we, the Senior Class ot l958, dedicate this year- book to you, Ivlr. Grundmann. 4 3 x ni ' is X n . 3 2 .425 . . ' 57. Ni X 3 if 4 4' BOARD OF TRUSTEES: George Stoltlmann, Dr. Arthur C. Leonard Dierker. NOT PICTURED: Rev. A great many individuals working together to promote student welfare make up these groups. Their industrious efforts are largely responsible for the success of the extracurricular program at L.l'l.S. Through sponsorship of the Fall Festival, the Sports Festival, and the Father's and Son's athletic banquet, the Booster Club raises funds which are used for extracurricular activities. They also provide all attendants for home basketball games. The Mothers' Club gives much-needed assistance by handling the bookwork of the Magazine Campaign and by providing supper for participants of the annual Christmas Concert, Sponsorship of the GAA Banquet is another of their many projects. The purpose of the Parent-Teachers League is to acauaint the parents vvith the edu- cational facilities at L.l-LS. Meeting four times a year, parents and faculty members have an opportunity to discuss problems relating to the grovvth and training of Christian teenagers. Working daily, the alert members of the oFhce staff efhciently take care of all the business matters of Lutheran High School. Not to be overlooked is the huge task of main- tenence assigned to the custodians. The kitchen staff, too, deserves credit for planning and preparing a variety of tasty lunches throughout the year. Courier Original cartoons, new columns, and vigorous school spirit characterized the monthly school paper, the Courier. Its editorials brought the many inconsistencies ot our taiths. News ot alumni and South Side Centers were among the prominent items. Re- views and previews on school presentations were much in evidence. The traditional arti- cles on seniors and taculty members were done with skill and wit. The special articles each month tor the amusement at the reader were highlighted by numerous cartoons which displayed the artistic as well as iournalistic talent at the statt. Sports news cov- ered the last page keeping the students up-to-date on the status ot the various teams. The excellent iob done by Mr. Letterman and the student staff was greatly appreciated by everyone at Lutheran High School. Among Their numerous projects, the Council led the entire student body in electing Hans Heinz as Prep Player ot the Week. As in previous years, three members ot the executive board were sent to the Lutheran High School Student Council Convention. Hans Heinz, Dwight Leimer, and Dorothy Bohnert represented St. Louis at this years' convention, which was held in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Again, the Student Council directed the distribution ot chapel collections. Woirthy charities received the donations that were col- ected in the chapel services each week, The first ot two new proiects initiated this year was the placing of photographs of various school activities on a bulletin board in the alcove. As the second proiect, the Council sent our greeting cards to cheer those students who were ill. As a whole, the student body has the Student Council to thank tor guiding them through a progressive year. 24 Clubs Scholarship Club The Scholcirship Club wos orgonized solely for the purpose of moking informotion on scholorships ovoiloble to onyone interested. Also included is participa- tion in charitable projects. f K. L. H. S. TIM lthose interested in rnedicinel is one of the few clubs dating back to early days of L.l-l.S. Especially interested are future nurses. During visits to local hospitals the most popular spot for the girls is the nursery. Besides hospital visits, nurses come and speak on various sub- jects. The club helps girls decide whether or not nursing is the right career choice for them. Crusader Club Room T27 is the home of radio sta- tion KLHS. This year it was organized as a club because of the lack of a for- mal radio class. Before and after school musical shows are presented to the lis- tening audience of the surrounding area, in addition, interviews are also held. The faculty advisor is Gilbert Daenzer. The ChrisTmas ConcerT was made a success greaTly Through The eTTorTs of The DramaTics Club, under The supervision of Miss Alice Schulze. Lutheran High School can be iustly proud of its many fine musical organizations, Since music is such an integral part of the Lutheran Church, it must also be included in the program at Lutheran High, The purpose of such an emphasis on music is to provide an opportunity for gifted students to glorify their Savior, and at the same time, carry His message to others. This is ac- complished through the many performances which are given throughout the year. Perhaps the most well-known of these is the annual Christmas Concert and Pageant. The second major presentation is the Spring Concert given in the early part of Q j May. Playing an important role in these performances is the 58 L.H.S. Choir directed by William J. Kirchhoff. Besides partici- pating in the two concerts, the Choir sang at the Reformation Rally and the Cornerstone-laying of the new high school, and also over Radio Stations KMOX and KFUO. A major project sponsored by the Senior Class was the recording of the Choir singing favorite Christmas selections. 30 , . ROW iz S. Fischer, V. Weber, P. Shaffer, L, Shipley, S.-Roehrs, P. It is from this group that Mr. Kirchhoft selects most of those people who sing in the Choir. The Junior Chorus also performs in the Christmas and Spring Concerts, as well as ioining fllhoir in presenting programs at the Fall Festival and the Sports Flestival. Feminine voices blending together make up what is known as Girls' Glee Club. Rehearsing every Tuesday and Friday with Mr. Kirchhoff, the girls practice songs to be used at the two Director of All Choral Groups concerts and for chapel services. A traditional feature of the Mr. William J- Kimhiwg Christmas Concert is the Singing Christmas Tree which is com- posed ofthe girls in the Glee Club. Very important in building up enthusiasm at pep sessions and athletic contests is the L.l-l,S. Band ably directed by Mr. Ralph Lee. Formerly practicing in the auditorium, this year the band was given a special room equipped with risers. This consti- tuted a great improvement for rehearsal conditions. Performing in the band concert along with the varsity band is the training band, also directed by Mr. Lee. 31 B Chorus ROW 'l: J, Klein, P. Merfen, C. Brauer, K. Kramer, M. Tischkau, J. Gifford, L. The Project Committee headed by Kay Klaas was re- sponsible tor raising funds. Selling Buzz Books, Christmas records by the LHS Choir, and getting patrons for the Sports Festival were a few of the proiects of this year's committee. Publicizing the ideas ot the Project Committee was the iob ot the Publicity Committee under the direction of Jan Koenn. ln addition to taking care of the Senior Bulletin Board, this group handled any advertising which involved the Senior Class. Led by Chairman Charlie Gruber, the Entertainment Committee planned senior recrea- tion. This included parties and the entire program for the Senior Camp week-end. All these committees working together with the class oFficers helped this year's seniors to function correctly and accomplish the tasks cut out tor them. All fee? F.
