THE GOLDEN YEAR This year is the fiftieth anniversary of sec- ondary education in Chicago. Few of us realize what hardships arose in planning such a school as ours. The idea of a Lutheran high school came in 1907 when a committee was appointed by the Concordia League to consider secondary educa- tion. lt was found that a majority of congregations thought it necessary to have a Lutheran high school in the Chicago area. On September 9, l9l5, tive thousand people witnessed the laying of the Luther lnstitute corner- stone. Funds were low, but the prayers ot its founders were answered when Luther Institute was dedicated on August 27, 1916. Luther lnstitute eventually became so crowded that branch schools were opened. Later, during depression years, these branch schools were clos- ed because they were no longer needed. On Iuly l, l949, the Lutheran High School As- sociation of Greater Chicago assumed the owner- ship and management oi Luther Institute. This as- sociation was organized in 1945 to build and op- erate additional Lutheran high schools in the Chi- cago area. Luther Institute was evacuated on Iuly lO, l952. Temporary quarters were rented at 28 North Franklin, just outside Chicago's Loop. After the closing oi Luther Institute, three new schools were opend. ln luly, l95l, Luther High South was opened. Walther Lutheran High School was opened in September, l954. The direct des- cendant Luther High North was dedicated on September 20, 1954. Through the fifty years of secondary education, our Lord has truly been the GOD OF YOUTH. He has seen the needs of youth and blessed us with three wonderful schools. , tt..-,.it.,a,z t-it I. t--tu, i :fit git. zirynttffret.
