'xviy V , V 2 THE GOLDEN YEAR This year is the fiftieth anniversary of sec- ondary education in Chicago. Few of us realize what hardships arose in planning such a school as ours. The idea of a Lutheran high school came in 1907 when a committee was appointed by the Concordia League to consider secondary educa- tion. lt was found that a majority of congregations thought it necessary to have a Lutheran high school in the Chicago area. On September 9, l9l5, tive thousand people witnessed the laying of the Luther lnstitute corner- stone. Funds were low, but the prayers ot its founders were answered when Luther Institute was dedicated on August 27, 1916. Luther lnstitute eventually became so crowded that branch schools were opened. Later, during depression years, these branch schools were clos- ed because they were no longer needed. On Iuly l, l949, the Lutheran High School As- sociation of Greater Chicago assumed the owner- ship and management oi Luther Institute. This as- sociation was organized in 1945 to build and op- erate additional Lutheran high schools in the Chi- cago area. Luther Institute was evacuated on Iuly lO, l952. Temporary quarters were rented at 28 North Franklin, just outside Chicago's Loop. After the closing oi Luther Institute, three new schools were opend. ln luly, l95l, Luther High South was opened. Walther Lutheran High School was opened in September, l954. The direct des- cendant Luther High North was dedicated on September 20, 1954. Through the fifty years of secondary education, our Lord has truly been the GOD OF YOUTH. He has seen the needs of youth and blessed us with three wonderful schools. , tt..-,.it.,a,z t-it I. t--tu, i :fit git. zirynttffret. Those pastors, teachers, and lay- men' who fifty years ago opened the doors of Luther Institute, now, fifty difficult yet bounteous years later, walk with us in spirit as we leave the school which their efforts brought to reality. Their beginnings were humble, very humble. Today, fifty years later, their efforts have blossomed into a growing edu- cational system. These founders were men of faith, strong-hearted men, willing to sacrifice, whose love for their Savior prompted them into action so that the Lutheran high school movement had its birth in the Chicago area. May you, the graduates of Luther North of l959, the heirs of the past, find inspiration in the deeds of those who contributed so much to the growth of Christian secondary educa- tion! Soon you will be given the opportunity to step into the footsteps of those who blazed the trail. May it then be said of you: They were men of faith, of vision and of love for others! Qcouis menAing Principal it K, Q, ff WW, THE FACULTY For the past tour years these Christ- ian men and women have undertaken the task ot bestowing knowledge to us -- the graduating class. Through the grace ot God their wise counseling, patience, and understanding has helped us to grow both in wisdom and in spirit. These, our teachers have helped us to realize that there truly is a God of Youth. We thank you with deepest sin- cerity and pray that God may be with you always. Mr. Duensing, Assistant Principal Dr. Henry J. Boettcher After many years ot iaithtul service for education, Dr. Henry Boettcher is go- ing to retire. In l952 he was appointed superintendent of the Lutheran High School Association of Greater Chicago. During this time he has served Luther South, Walther, and our school as su- perintendent ot these three liiqh schools. Doctor Boettcher graduated from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Mis- souri in l9l8. Following this he went on to receive his masters degree at Alberta University in l936 and his Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota in 1936. For a number ot years he served the parish ministry in Canada and was the coun- selor in parish education in Minnesota district until he was appointed to his present position. We would like to thank Dr. Boettcher tor his service to Lutheran higher edu- cation and wish him Gocl's richest bless- ing in his retirement. Qi4 lt'fEi Rev. There are many projects which the Student Council undertakes. Among these are the Homecoming show, Christmas decorations, civic letter points, all school party, and many more. With the coopera- tion of the Council members and the help of their advisor, Mr. Duensing, they have accomplished much and attained many of their goals. This year a new responsibility was added to the duties of the Student Councilwthat of Student Control. Student Council mem- bers served on Student Court and as monitors for detention hall. Under the direction of the Student Council, new plans for the im- provement of Student Control were made. Throughout the past year, the Student Council has attempted to serve the school to the benefit ot all concerned. lf the Council is to function properly, it needs the support and cooperation of the student body. The work ot the Student Council should not go unrecognized but should be commended as being ot greatest importance to our school. Courtesy of Mr. 61 Mrs. C. Hardt, C.cSH Electric Co. In these choirs students have the op- portunity and joy of singing and speading the Word of God. One of the greatest thrills for all the choirs was the making of a high fidelity re- cording in the honor of the fifieth anniversary of Lutheran secondary education in Chicago. Seeing and hearing all the choirs sing to the Glory of God certainly strengthens our certain- ty of a GOD OF YOUTH. Mr. Schroth A CAPELLA CHOIR The A Capella Choir has performed fre- quently to spread the Gospel through music. lt was asked to appear at a music clinic and also had the privilege of performing for the Execu- tive's Club. VARSITY FOOTBALL We at L. I-I. N. all are proud of our Wildcats who ended the football season as co-champs of the Private School League. After losing their first three games of the season to non-league schools, the team rolled over their next four opponents to gain for us a tie of first place. In the championship game with Wheaton we were defeated, but we still shared co-championship with them. During the season the Wildcats outscored their opponents 147- ll3. Dick Calhoun, a sophomore fullback, scored 8 touchdowns gaining 475 yards rushing. By scoring l62 yards in one game, Dick broke the school rushing record in the game against Mil- waukee. Quarterback Iim Dau completed 32 passes for 446 yards to help out the offense. ln eight games the offense only failed to score in one game. This year L.H.N. was fortunate in having five boys elected to the P.S.L. All Star Team. Iim Dau, Chuck Kreutzer, and Pete Pustorino were selected for the first team. Gary Mehl and Dick Calhoun made the second team, and Bruce Anderson received honorable mention. Next year the captain will be Dale Schu- macher. Thanks and congratulations go to the coaches, Mr. George Yursky and Mr. Roland Schleusener, and Captain Pete Pustorino as well as to the team which brought us a championship.
