High-school days are almost over for us seniors, and although we look forward to what lies ahead, we also would like to take a backward glance at the events we have witnessed. Do you seniors remember the Freshmen Branch? Can you remember your feelings as you walked into the new school for the first time? Remember the first game on our own field, and the victory it brought? How about the parties, plays and homecomings? But most of all, do you remember our daily devotions, through which the guiding hand of God led us along the paths of Christian lite? Because of these and many other events which have taken place in the past few years, we, iust as the students shown looking backward into the past wish to dedicate this book to the hours of today, the minutes ol tomorrow, but especially to the . . . MANY MOMENTS WE HAVE TO REMEMBER . K args sf . A Y ic- A 'ff W givsji 45435 4, is6g,gsZY5yigs sw' 'Z -' I . -t fs 2 ,.,, --i- -ff: is , .U t i . ,mag e tibfgsg K Xggwgffsg- W . gg i ? LOUIS A. MENKING Principal R ft up jo fke grcwfuafed: Time is an Opportunity. In the divine counsel of God, Time is your opportunity to plan your career for eternity. Your high school years at Luther North, short but important, have contributed to that end. To observe the opportunity as the apocryphal writer states, is enioined upon you who this year leave your Alma Mater to make your own way in lite. We of the Luther North staff, who count it a privilege to have guided you in the proper use of your Time, shall be fully rewarded when the annals of the future record that the class of 1956 has fully measured up to the opportunities presented to them. We believe that because of our Christian training and education we are better equipped to face the problems of every day living. We leave behind four happy years and go our separate ways. But before we part, we give our most sincere thanks to the faculty for their help and guidance, to the congregations of the North Side for pro- viding our school, to our parents for their love and understanding, and to our Lord for all the bountiful blessings he has bestowed upon us. Naturally, he Thinks of himself somewhat as a grandfather who ponders on how far he has come in wisdom, in society, and in experience. Not knowing iust exactly where he will go next, he wanders on, as the grandfather clock that casually ticks away the days and seasons. We, the graduation class of 1956, believe that the class' of 1957 has the initiative and ability to carry on the traditions of Luther High North, and that with the help of God, they will do so. , V ,, Donna Abel ' Don Adams -1 .V Taz im V 'Q' V r , Diane Altergott -.V ,if af., f . Let's have fun now. A sophomore can always be recognized by his Tom Foolery which is carried on hour after hour, day after day. Because they express such a clowning and non-serious attitude, we have chosen the Coo-coo-clock as being characteristic of the sophomore class ot 1956. This symbol will change however, for next year when they realize that they are upper classmen, they will become the settled juniors. Qir K if .. . - 'TE W' ' Wi w -' . STANDING: Andee Krausman, Judy Eheim, Ken Becker, Bill Clark, Bob Scholz, Dennis Heidorn, Perry Gulbrandson, Dick Maxwell, Henry Hemmeter, Herb Hoelfer, Nancy Koeppe. ln the past school year, Luther's Student Council has lived up to its previous reputation. It was headed this year by President Marv Meyer, Vice-president Kent Moldenhauer, and Secretary-Treasurer Nancy Stangenberg. lts advisor, Mr. Treichel, was present at all its meetings to listen to their ideas and offer his advice. Major projects sponsored by the Student Council this year included the Homecoming Activities, the beautiful Christmas trees and decorations at Christ- mas time and the holding of the Student Council Convention of Lutheran High Schools at Luther North this year, of which our Student Council was entirely in charge. These are just a few of the many activities and projects the Student Council has taken part in. We know everyone wishes to thank the Student Council for the part they played in our school functions. They have done a wonderful job this year. But if a Student Council is to remain one of the most active and efficient organiza- tions of the school, it needs the support and respect of the student body. We believe the students at Luther this year have shown these two outstanding qualities and we hope, in the following years, that they will still prevail. You are holding in your hands the f'n :shed product of the l956 Log Stat? lt took many hours, weeks and months to assemble all the material in the book, and the midnight oil burned brightly many a night lust before deadline. There are thanks due to many people who helped us publish our Log. To the seniors, thank you for the help you gave us by meeting our goal in the Log Patron Drive and for going over the top. Thank-you's go also to Nlr. Norman Koenig and Mr, Ernie Rubak ot King Publishing Company for help ing us plan our book and lay it out properly. We also want to thank Walinger Studios for all the wonderful pictures in the book they furnished. And last but not least, we wish to thank Mr. Lange, our Advisor, for all his guidance and advice. Under the leadership of Ruth Diehl, Editor, and Jerry Danzer, Assistant Editor, the Blue and Gold has added many new ideas, and improve- ments have been made in many instances. One of the new ideas of this year's paper is the blue banner of our school across the top of each issue. ln previous years the banner was iust black and white. Another new idea is the single picture of all the students featured in Luther Lights. Also the new feature of having an underclassman in the column. ,All these and many other improvements and changes have made this year's Blue and Gold one of the best in Luther's history. This could not have taken place except for all the students on the different staffs of the paper who worked together and worked so hard to bring the student body the Blue and Gold at its best. Therefore, we wish to congratulate and thank all the members of the 1955-1956 Blue and Gold staffs for doing a wonderful iob in publishing our paper, and we wish the staff of the 1956-1957 Blue and Gold the best of luck in their paper. If you would ask anyone who happens to be in Room 108, oth period each day, what is the best high school choir in Chicago, l'm sure they would tell you The A Cappella of Luther High North. Not that they are preiudiced or anything. We think there's a lot of truth in it. This year's A Cappella is composed of Juniors and Seniors who meet hve times a week. Under the leadership of Mr. Schroth, the choir this year has sung some of the most beautiful music ever written. They have added to their repertoire such numbers as Lord, Thou Hast Been Our Dwelling Place and Worthy is The Lamb from the Messiah. Something new was added to the choir this year also. The old maroon robes were dyed black and white satin collars and stoles were purchased. With these changes, we think we have one of the finest looking and the best singing choir in the Chicago area. We'd like to thank the choir for their inspiring singing and magnificent concerts in our gym and also, thank you to Mr. Schroth, for his patience and great understanding of music which he is imparting to the members of the choir. A second choir, under the direction ot Mr. Schroth, is the Sophomore Choir and just as its name suggests, it is open only to sophomores of Luther. The sophomores and all the other students at Luther have a right to be proud ot their choir. It was started last year and known as just plain Chorus and was open to anyone. But come this year, it had changed its format and is now the Sophomore Choir. The Choir has sung at all the maior concerts put on by our Musical Depart- ment in our gymnasium and has shown remarkable talent. This choir was formed at the beginning of the second semester. It is open to all freshmen at Luther. Its membership this year is around 125. Just like the Sophomore Choir, the members are aiming for a place in the A Cappella during their iunior and senior years. With the grand iob the Freshmen are doing and plenty of hard work, we believe the freshmen, when they are juniors and seniors, will give Luther an A Cappella choir to be proud of. All it takes is ambition, faith, and hard work. We know they can do it. The Senior Science Club, which is open to iuniors and seniors, ancl the Junior Science Club, which is open to sophomores and freshmen. They are under the direction of Mr. Tarnoski. We believe the Science Clubs are one of the most active clubs at Luther this year. One of its big undertakings was the Science Fair which took place in our gym in March. This event and many other activities have kept the mem- bers of both clubs busy many nights after school. The Latin Club is a different Type club at Luther. lt holds its regular meetings during class periods. It is macle up of members E7 from both the first year and second year Latin classes. Cl ll'l At Christmas time the members of the Latin Club sang the favorite Christmas carols in Latin in the main lobby and in the CAL upper hallways. This helped to spread the Christmas message to the students. We'd like to thank the Latin Club for the part they played in our Christmas festivities. Under the direction of Mr. Betterman, and assisted by Mr. Dale Hartmann this year, the Camera Club has accomplished many things. They have organized the dark room between the two science amera rooms, brught their own equipment, and also have sold stock in their club. This year, because of the split schedule, there has been no Drama Club at Luther. In its place has come the Luther Players. This isn't a club, for it has no constitution or regular meetings. It is made up of all students who have taken part in all the maior and minor dramatic productions of the school this year, such as the Junior Class Play, the Christmas Pageant, and the package shows which were performed at the various churches in the Chicago area. Mrs. Beverly Karzel is in charge of this group. We would like to say thank you, Luther Players, for adding a touch of gaiety and entertainment to our lives by your productions. The Proiectors Club, under the supervision of Mr. Dinkmeyer, is open to any ,boy at Luther. ln their club meetings, the boys learn all about movie pro- iectors and how to run films. They take care of the showing of all films in the classes. Another good feature of this club is that they get to see many different movies at their regular meetings. One of the busiest clubs at Luther this year was the Key Club. Many people do not know what the Key Club really is. It is a group of senior boys, with the exception of six iunior boys, which is sponsored by the Kiwanis Clubs of Chicago. Under the direction of Mr. Treichel, the Key Club this year has undertaken great responsibilities and has carried out these iobs wonderfully. Some of the big campaigns of this year's Key Club were: the Curtis Campaign from which the school received 5900, the March of Dimes drive, the funderaising drive for the letters on top of the school, the penny-pinching campaign which raised money for the new addition to the school and another undertaking which resulted in all the members looking like they belonged to the House of David. Lutherites should be proud of their Key Club for the many fine things they have done in the past year. May the Key Clubs at Luther in the future live up to the example which the Club of 1955-1956 has set for them. Congratulations on the wonderful year, fellows. . .nn-sv' 1 .. Organ- ized last year, it is Luther's official cheering section at all games. Membership is by invitation only and is also open to all students who have participated in any of the school's sports. The oFficial uniform of the Pep Club is a white blouse and blue skirt for the girls, and white shirts and blue slacks for the fellows. We think our Pep Club is doing a wonderful iob at the games, cheering and letting the fellows out there know that we are behind them. Let's keep up the school spirit in the following years. Luther's Religion Activities Club, better known as the R.A. C., played a very important part in the lives of many people this year. Besides taking census at different churches in Chicago and the neighboring suburbs, the members of the R. A. C. made up Christ- mas food packages to be given to needy families in the Chicago area. The R.A. C. is a wonderful club and we are proud of all the members for their interest and hard work. We believe that Rev- erend Theis is an able and understanding leader and all are to be congratulated for their fine work this year. Every noon from the kitchen comes the fragrant aroma of cooking victuals. And the preparation of all this wonderful food couldn't be possible without Luther's famous kitchen crew. The heads of our department are Mrs. M. Halvorsen and Miss Chris Locht who prepare the tasty dishes. And they couldn't do all this by themselves. So they have all their helpers - students who have volunteered to work in the kitchen during their free periods. We wish to thank the whole Kitchen Department for their hard work and for the wonderful meals they set before us each noon. Courtesy of John M. If you bought a hot dog or an ice cream bar at any of the basketball games this past season, you were eating victuals made available by the Lettermen's Club. The club was under the supervision of Mr. George Yursky this year. One of the maior undertakings by the fellows was the purchasing of a trophy case which was placed in the hallway by the gymnasium. The big event of the year for the lettermen was the initiation which took place early in February. This is where the incoming Iettermen, called flunkies, are given the full treatment by the established lettermen. This classic event is enjoyed by all the students at Luther. Even though they have lun and goof around, the club has set an example and shown school spirit and support. We hope this is carried on in the following years. vi.. ll. We , . Our homecoming game this year was the most thrilling of the season. We played Luther South on our own football field, our first game on it, despite the rain and bad weather that made the field quite muddy the day before. A thrilling game, with Luther loosing by ll points at the half and coming back to tie the score in the third quarter, but meeting defeat by a score of 59 to 47. North Shore went ahead to win the private school league tournament. The team looked sharp this year, due to the new warm-up pants and jackets of white satin trimmed in gold. Leaving the team this year will be three graduating seniors: Ernie Koenig, the team captain for the year, Lloyd Red Andersen, and Dick Fick, the high scorer of the season. Returning next year will be Harvey Hirsch, Ken Becker, John Wilson, Harold Jahnke, Art Filip, and Warran Arndt. These and other boys should give Luther a team good enough to stand up to any school in the Private School League. A,.,.. . eff, , 3 V X it '::, ri, S .. The game against Luther South which saw our team come out on top by a score of 43-40 is considered the best one of the year for the Ponies. The Fresh-Soph Team did an outstanding job this year and part of their success is due to the students who came out to cheer them on. 'hav Courtesy of G. and G. Manufacturing Co. Acker, Mike Gieseke Bruce Weslerberg, Dale Koepke, Charles Schmidt, Mr. Domroese. Luther has a new team this year. It is the Freshman Basketball team. They are being coached by Mr. Don Dinkmeyer and Mr. Ken Domroese. For their first season, our freshman basketball players gave a good account for themselves. They finished the season with a record of 6 wins and 5 losses. The best game of the year for the Freshman team was an overtime victory over North Park Academy, 45-41. We think the idea of having a Freshman team at Luther is a good one and we hope it continues in the following years. By the time these freshman players are seniors and on the Varsity we should have a real championship team. 1 Zac .clam i. ,XL IL... was lSITTlNGl Ron Gall, Herb Zimmermann, Dave Nasby, Ed Hamel, Larry Clemetsen.
