For twelve years she has been a teacher at Luther. In those 12 years there have been many students whom she has guided and helped to find their first jobs. She has not only taught those in her field faithfully, but with her comfort, advice, and sympathy has patterned the lives of many others. Her office doors are always open to anyone seeking advice. She will remain in the memory of all as one carrying out God's will in everything she undertakes. Many of us will be forever grateful to her, but too few ever tell her so. Therefore, in recognition of her tireless efforts for us, we dedicate this book to the head of the commercial department, Mrs. Geraldine Schmitt. Fall, winter, spring, summer, and one more year has passed. A pleasant year filled with new discoveries and memorable times for us at Luther High North. The passing of our tour years at Luther we see so clearly in the seasonal changes of a tree. And so, we have chosen trees as the theme ot this Log. Ever changing trees mark the division pages. lust as a tree needs sunshine and rain to make it grow, so also we need the guidance ot our teachers to help us grow mentally and spiritually. With this thought and the knowledge oi how richly God has blessed us this past year, we, the class of l955, proudly present this book to the student body and friends of Luther High North. Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is Wisdom . These Words spoken by Iob centuries ago must form the pattern for your life. Education as such has been hailed as the great assurance for America's better and happier tomorrow. You have been trained in a high school with a Christian philosophy of life Where the fear of the Lord is regarded as the highest mark of academic achievement. It is the sincere hope ot those Who have had the privil- ege ot Working with you, oi sharing with you the truths of God's eternal Word, that this training will guide you constantly in your service to God and your fellowman. We will remember always the good times We have had, and we thank God for the opportunity He has given us to attend a Christian school. Through the successful editing ot our twin publications, the BLUE AND GOLD and the LOG, by assuming leadership in the various social functions and campaigns: and by our school spirit: we believe we have, in our final year, surpassed our achievements of the previous three years, and can look back upon a job well done. Yet we humbly realize that this could not be possible without the co- operation of the student body, the help ot our faculty, the love and interest ot our parents, and the guiding hand of God. LOG STAFF Did you ever have a secret you found very hard to keep? But you knew for twelve long months you must let no one have a peek? Well, that Was the biggest problem, it sure kept us in a bog. Who had that problem? 'Twas the staff of Luther's log. But after all those months of payments, pictures, and a money Worry, After the final deadline which meant hurry, hurry, hurry, We finally came up with the end of all our pains, And in the book you have before you We hope the best remains. Each job is important, and takes lots of time. l'll present them all in this little rhyme: Much credit should go to the Editor in Chief, For each issue's deadline brings some added grief. The task of the News Staff is to present, A true account of every event. The Feature Staff has its troubles too, lts job is to Write things of interest to you. The final staff is the one called Sports, Each game of the season it reports. Each job is important, much credit is due, To typists, make-up, and proof-readers too, To the Business Managers, who handle the money, To the people who bring in jokes, corny and funny. The two highest scorers were Ralph Larsen with 48 points and Wally Ptlug with 24 points. The game with North Shore proved to be the most exciting one ln the last moments of the contest, Wally Ptlug made the extra point to win the game Our other victory was the Glenwood game which ended with a tmal score ot 34-O. Some ot the individual honors that were bestowed on members ot this year's squad were ones which brought tame to our school. Ralph Larsen Ed Krueger, and Wally Pflug were elected to the P. S. L. All Star team for spectac ular participation in league competition. Wally Ptlug was highly honored by being elected by his teammates to receive the most valuable player award as well as being chosen on the All City and All State teams. VARSITY BASKETBALL This season the Wildcats were under the direction of Mr. Don Dink- rneyer and assisted by Mr. D. Vifallace. Although we did not finish in the top bracket, our fellas gave an ex- cellent showing at a number of the games. The students as well as the players will agree that the best game of the year was the tournament game, against Luther South. The players showed top team spirit through- out the whole game, never once giving up hope. We took the defeat, but inside no one felt defeated, for we knew that our players had given all they had. At the end of the basketball season, a pep assembly was held at which time the following players received their letters: Arvin Kruse, Wal- lace Pflug, Don Koetke, Art Schumacher, Lloyd Andersen, Dick Pick, Bon Simpson, George Cobb, Ken Becker, and also our two faithful managers, Bob and Dick Wetzel. At the end of the assembly, Arvin Kruse took all honors by receiving the title of Captain, as well as the Most Valuable Player Award. The season ended with 4 wins and l7 losses. Dick Pick was high scorer for the season with l84 point and Arvin Kruse followed with l6O points. Arvin also received honorable mention on the P.S.L. All Star team. With most of the players returning, next year's team will start with the advantage of this year's experience. MR. AND MRS. BASEBALL TEAM ln spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of. . . baseball. And this year spring certainly arrived at Luther North in a big way. The baseball nine, coached by our principal, Mr. Louis A. Menking, and assisted by Mr. Blecke and Mr. Yursky, were really out there playing ball. Sixty boys tried out for the team, demonstrating their desire to play ball. However, the squad Was cut to a sufficient number of players and the season was under Way. Seventeen games were played this year in a schedule that began on March 31 and ended on Memorial Day, May 30. Don Koetke, the captain of the team and also second-base- man, did his best to draw top performance from the team. The rest of the starting lineup included, Art Schumacher, Wally Pflug, and Paul Steinbach, pitchers: Dave Terwell, catcher: Dick Pick, first base, Karl Asmus, third base: Art Filip, shortstop: Harold Iahnke, right field, Chuck Holland, center field, and Ralph Larsen, left field. The team was especially strong in the pitching and fielding departments. With the spirit that marked this baseball team of l955, the boys certainly did a job that Luther High North can be proud of. HARRY MEYER M M. ALTERGOTT CEMENT CONSTRUCTION TENNIS TEAM Luther's tennis team was in full swing again this year. The squad was made up of Ron Zimmer, Carl Shenlc, Ron Simp- son, Kent Moldenhauer, and Al Wanninger. Mr. Duensing, Who served as coach, had high hopes for his team. He encour- aged freshmen boys and girls to participate in the game be- cause it takes time to develop into a competitive player. Po- sitions on the squad were gained through competitive matches. lt is interesting to note that all players on the first squad were juniors. Practice began in the middle of April and continued to the middle of May. This is one of the newer sports at Luther, but in the years to come undoubtedly ten- nis will take its place next to baseball and track. last row, left to right Coach Duensing, Ron Nickels, Al Wan- ninger, Ron Zimmer, Hans Moll. first row, left to right Gary Palm, Ken Shank, Ron Simpson. 84 DE GRAF TRACK MR.
