As quoted from sophomore, Jennifer Silc, “It was a learning experience.” Coach William’s team is expected to show great improvements next year. FOOTBALL DEVILS: DEDICATION, DETERMINATION, AND DEVOTION The Ironwood Red Devils Varsity team displayed determination, but fell short of overall goals this season. The record for the 87-88 year was 3 wins and 6 losses. In the ABC Conference, they earned a 0-5 record. Although the season was a little disappointing, it was a good learning experience for the players. Despite the fact that, “The Devils were a junior dominated team,” as quoted from Coach Miklesh, a number of seniors were noted for their outstanding abilities. Jim Miklish was named 1st team all conference Defensive halfback. First Team All Conference Offensive End was given to Darin Laabs. The four Seniors who received Honorable Mention includes Greg Hamberg (linebacker) and Troy Puisto (noseguard) for Defense along with Mike Rubatt (running back) and Jay Vaughn (flanker) for offense. We’re proud of the varsity team members and their accomplishments with the help of Brad Benton, a sophomore, who contributed his remarkable talent throughout the season. As we say good-bye to the graduating seniors, we must also say farewell to Coach Miklesh. We congratulate him in all his years of coaching the Red Devils and his ability to produce a strong returning squad for first-year Varsity Coach, Dave Davis. JU's Row I: T. Damgard, D. Spets, J. What a team! What a year! The excitement was endless and the atmosphere intense. Being the first year high school hockey team, the Devils can be very proud of the record. They ended their regular season with 11 wins and 9 losses. The Devils finished off by competing in the Region 16 tournament. They won the first game against Lake Linden in overtime, 5-4. Reved up and ready to do, IHS was on top again in game 2, defeating Jeffers, 4-2. The tension built and spirits soared as the IHS icers stepped up to the championship round and took on the Calumet Kings. Although the Devils were beaten, 9-1, the game was a sight to see! Mark Huhta, in the nets for the Devils, managed to stop 86 of the 95 shots on goal. As quoted to be the “Sophomore Sensation,” he broke the Lake Superior Conference record for the number of saves during playoffs. Dave Ramme, the 1 scorer on the team, tipped in the only goal for the Red Devils, with the help of Derek Hookana, the 2 scorer, and Larry Lapachin. The high school hockey program got off to a fantastic start. The players mixed and matched, ranging from Freshmen to Seniors. Many will be returning and improving in the years to come, creating that magical mirage on ice. We must say goodbye to four senior stars, Neil, Phil, Aaron, and Thane. We wish them luck in their future hockey endeavors and thank them for sharing their talents. We’re looking forward to continuing this program and as quoted by Coach Blooming, “With the addition of a few more players and along with the returning regulars, the Devils should pick up where they left off this season.” Congratulations to all the members of the Red Devils hockey team and coaches and a thanks to the fan support we had this year! Good luck in future years. 12 1st Row: Mark Huhta, Brent Martilla, Neil Gilbertson, Aaron Johnson, Thane Storck, Phil Mackinder, Dave Ramme, John Jurasin. 2nd Row: Asst. SKI TEAM SKI TEAM The IHS Ski Team displayed a well-balanced performance in the 87-88 season. “The girls expected to be great this year and they lived up to the expectations. The boys were rebuilding and came thru in the U.P. meet. The boys should be good next year and the girls will have to replace two of the best in the U.P.,” according to Coach Theron Peterson. Seven of the nine meets the girls participated in, they placed first. They came out on top in the Northern Ski League, the A.B.C. Conference, were the U.P. Champs, and placed 10th in the State Finals. The boys also were the U.P. Champs, and earned a 9th ranking in the State Finals. 14 Row I: M. Higgins, A. Clemans, D. Anderson, M. Stempihar. Row II: Coach Peterson, D. Kaiser, B. Goetz, C. Carlson, C. McRae, D. Tregembo. Honors were awarded to Seniors Chris Carlson, Jill Oja, and Heidi Hagstrom for making the all U.P. First Ski Team. Sophomore Jennifer Silc made the girls 2nd Team. In the northern Ski League Top Ten, Jill and Heidi tied for 1st, Jennifer came in 3rd, Chris placed 5th, and in 6th place came Robyn Schachman. Next year’s ski team will be minus four seniors: Chris, Jill, Heidi, and Bob Goetz. Congratulations to them for all their accomplishments and honors they have received throughout the years. Good luck to the returning members for the 88-89 season! TEAM 15 VOLLEYBALL The Team has shown great improvement throughout the year. The sport has captured more attention and larger crowds. They earned a 7-3 record in the Great Western Conference, placed 2nd in the Wakefield Invitational Tournament and 4th in the Ironwood Invitational. Coach Oman shared her opinion on the outstanding players. The setters were captain Ginna Burchell, and Jackie McMullin. Missy Carlson and Rachel Pin-ski were the outstanding spikers. The girls who displayed a talent in serving were seniors Kim Mattson, Ginna Burchell, and Juniors, Darci DeMeio, Gina Wilson, and Kim Gregesich. Jane Sweeney, Kris Rigoni and Wendy Stefani Row 1: Wendy Stefani, Chris Rigoni, Missy Carlson, Stephanie Byrns, Rachael Pinski, Kim Gregisich, Miss Oman. Row 2: Jane Sweeney, Kim Mattson, Ginna Burchell, Darci DeMeio, Gina Wilson, Jackie McMullen. were the team’s strong back row defense. The team is to be commended on their talents and efforts they have shown, making the team second in the Great Western Conference. 16 J 0 N I Amy Ciesielczyk, Ann Gotta, Justine Salo, Mrs. Kanipes, Coach; Lanette Taivalmaa, Ann Borowski, Sara Thomas R 17 TENNIS Kneeling: R. In M-W (Michigan Wisconsin) conference play our very young team, composed of freshmen, sophomores, 3 juniors, and 1 senior, Jill Oja, came up short with a record of 2-8-1 tie. Although being first year doubles partners, Chris Cady and Jackie Thomas worked together to become quarter finalists and medal winners in the U.P. Girls Tennis Finals held in Ishpeming. Coach, Mrs. Kanipes expects next year’s season to be a good one, having all players returning, Jill being the only exception. The young team is enthusiastic and eager to learn as several girls have already signed up to participate in MSU’s summer tennis camp. 18 VARSITY BASKETBALL Although individual efforts were potentially good, the team had difficulties combining talents. The Devils managed to earn a 10-10 record. The record speaks for itself. The Red Devils won the Gogebic Range Christmas Tournament. Honors went to Darin Laabs and Mike Rubatt who made the All Tournament team. Next year’s team will be short six fine Senior players. Good luck to Coach Anderson and the 88-89 Varsity Basketball Team. Since her devastating wartime experiences in Europe, she has devoted herself to the task of acquainting people with the actual horrors of war. That is why she has brought a documentary movie with her to be shown to the fresh young graduates. The movie is considered harsh and improper by the trustees, however, so Miss Reed has a fight on her hands. The conflict exposes the president as a spineless and irresolute figure, instead of the upstanding and outspoken professor with who Miss Reed thought she had been in love for so many years. The disenchantment drives her into the arms of a wartime acquaintance who, as a Life photographer, has come to cover the event.
