“
Lrgs HEMATITE 1976 Luther L. Wright High School Ironwood, Michigan Editorial — Class of 1911 The first volume of the Hematite is forthwith offered to the public. As this is the first time the publication of an Annual has been attempted in the Ironwood High School, we hope it will meet the requirements of a High School edition in recording the important events of a year, in turning the thoughts of the Alumni to their Alma Mater, in showing the successes of the school, and finally in bringing all people in closer touch with their own institution. The Hematite Board desires to express their indebtedness to Mr. Watson, for his correction of papers and other assistance. Also to Mr. Brennan for his excellent advise and the compiling the Alumni List, also to all other persons having anything whatsoever to do with the publishing and success of the Hematite.” One of th features of the Hematite is the Alumni List, which gives the names and addresses of all the graduates of the High Shool since its organization. In presenting this book to the public, we realize that it is not a work of perfection. In some instances it does not come up to our expectations, but we exhort the class of ' 12 to profit by our errors and publish the banner edition of the Hematite. Nevertheless, we have done our best, and with this thought, we lay aside our quills, and await the verdict of the public. Harry Trezise Editor-in-Chief Whitney Crosby Assistant Editor - First Yearbook 1911 Editors’ Letter — Class of 1976 This being the Bicentennial Year, we, the editors of the 1976 Hema- tite , hope to renew visions of the past. Scenes of our city are depicted in the special historical section in honor of the Bicentennial celebration. Some candid shots of those who roamed our halls in past years are included to add a personal touch to the celebration, and perhaps, a bit of humor in remembering the way we were. 2 CO-EDITORS - 1976 HEMATITE TA BEE OF CONTENTS Title Page...............................Page 1 Editors’ Letter..........................Page Dedication...............................Page 4 Administration...........................Page Faculty..................................Page 7 Underclassmen .........................Page 17 Seniors................................Page 33 Organizations..........................Page 53 Activities.............................Page 79 A thletics.............................Page 93 Historical View Page 118 Bicentennial Section.....................Page 129 Advertisers..............................Page 145 Index....................................Page 154 Dedication The 1976 ''Bicentennial Hematite is dedicated to the Iron wood Community that has continued the efforts of the first area settlers to provide the best facilities possible for the education of its youth; that has persisted in keeping the area a good place in which to live in the face of many difficult times; and that has given us a past of which we can be proud. Superintendent 5 As we celebrate the Bicentennial in this special year of 1976, we are at a pivotal time in the history of our country. We have spent much time in the past year looking back at the lessons to be learned from the past; we have also looked to the future to try to prepare ourselves for it. The class of 1976 leaves Luther L. Wright with tremendous opportunities and responsibilities. It is my hope that their four years spent here will prepare all class members to take advantage of the opportunities that are presented to them in the future and will have provided them with the skills, knowledges and attitudes necessary to fulfill their obligations to their families, friends, society, and, most of all, themselves. Congratulations and best wishes to each member of the class. William T. Hyry Principal 6 VIRGINIA AUKEE B.A.; N.M.U.; English. HENRY BOTH WELL B. A history of the Gogebic Iron Range written by Joseph Gill notes that the flags of three nations have flown over this former campground of the Ottowas, an area now called the Gogebic Range. The French coureurs des bois and the voyageurs came down the Presque Isle and the Montreal Rivers in the early 1600's, seeking furs and helping missionaries, blazing the trail for the development of the great northwest.” Radisson and Groseilliers arrived in 1654. Trade with the Iroquois was increased dramatically despite the hardships of reaching the area. In 1763 England took over the territory after the Seven Years’ War. Twenty years later the treaty of Paris gave the land to the young United States. The Upper Peninusula was given to a reluctant Michigan as recompense over a dispute with Ohio. Iron ore was discovered in the area in 1871. According to Mr. Lemmer's information as published in a Youngstown Steel Bulletin: Michigan’s iron ore history goes back to 1844 . . . The first indications of iron ore in the Gogebic were reported in 1848; . . . The first mine - the Colby - was opened in 1884 . . . Within a year seven mines were in operation (bordering Ironwood) . . . Two thousand miners were employed between Sunday Lake and the Montreal River. An iron ore explorer gave Ironwood its name. HIGHLIGHTS FROM A HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF IRONWOOD, GOGEBIC COUNTY, STATE OF MICHIGAN (July 1, 1885 - July 1, 1926) as written by James S. Monroes, Attorney and Legal Advisor of the Board of Education, 1885-1928. 1884: The Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western Railway completed the line from Ashland through Rock Cut to Hurley, from Ontonagon, the county seat. This area could be reached by boat. Ironwood had not yet been formed out of part of the Carp Lake Township. Ontonagon County included this area. 1885: Determination on the part of the increasing number of settlers brought about the creation of the Township of Ironwood and Bessemer Township.” The land around Ironwood remained in the Carp Lake Township, the seat of government being at the None Such mine in the Porcupines. Ironwood became a primary School District Number Four of Carp Lake Township.” The first school building was a small one-story frame building with one school teacher. Dec. 11, 1885: A petition gave Ironwood its own local government. Jan. 4, 1886: The designation was changed to ’'School District Number One of the Township of Ironwood.'' Ironwood by this time was fully and strongly unionized. July 1886: The politically powerful Knights of Labor influenced the change to a six-man board of education and the change to a graded school district. August 1886: Ironwood, bonded and taxed, built its first real school. 1887: Increasing population and political necessity along with the difficulty of reaching Ontonagon induced the Michigan Legislature to pass Act 337, thus creating a new County of Gogebic. Sept. 1887: Mr. Luther L. Wright of Waupaca, Wisconsin, became the superintendent of the school district, a position he held for twenty-two years, until he became State Superintendent of Public Instruction in 1909. Our present school system is largely the result of his direction. Population was centered around mining communities called locations, rather than in Ironwood proper. From east to west, and under five competing managements, were the Bonnie, the Iron King, the Pabst, the Aurora and Vaughn, the East Norrie, and the Ashland. Each demanded separate school buildings. On Sept. 17th a great fire destroyed most of Ironwood. Nov. 1887: Ironwood quickly rebuilt. Its political status was changed from township to Incorporated Village. 1888: Overcoming financial difficulties, Ironwood built a new three-story school to house the first high school as well as the grades. Ironwood, still in the middle of the wilderness, had the finest school building in the Upper Peninsula . . . 1889: Ironwood became a city, taking into its boundaries all the mining communities except Bonnie which was left in order that Ironwood township not be dissolved. In May, the district became the Fractional School District Number One of the City and Township of Ironwood” with tax revenues including a one-mill tax from the township. The high school was in need of more space; the grades needed safer buildings. Hopes were high. Mining developments on the Agogebic Range necessitated diamond drilling and the sinking of deep shafts. 1889-1893: The iron mines and Ironwood prospered. 118 1890: The Ironwood High School graduated its first class. The high school course was a three-year program. The institution of a four-year program left 1893 without a graduating class. 1893: Two Eastern ladies introduced the private Kindergarten School with such success that Ironwood became one of the new school districts in the country to include the kindergarten in the public school system, and with a building to house it named after the father of the kindergarten idea, Frederick Froebel. 1893-1894: All the mines closed down. There was also a typhoid epidemic. When the mines reopened wages were $1.25 a day. Outside organizers, mobs, bitter fights among various factions brought on a short period of military rule. Industrial, social and political changes were occuring. 1897: Ironwood and Ironwood Township separated: Ironwood’s new district was named the Public Schools of the City of Ironwood.'' New names marked the mining industry. Jan. 1900: A new high school building, said to be the best in the North and perhaps in the United States, was dedicated and named the Luther L. Wright High School. It had a 300 foot frontage on Ayer Street. March 1901: A change in mine managements brought about a merger into the United States Steel Corporation. Depression gave place to prosperity. A Domestic Science Building was erected in 1903, and a Manual Arts Building came into being in 1908. Both were situated across the street from the L. L. Wright H.S. 1909: Up to this time, Ironwood, Bessemer and Wakefield were isolated from the rest of Michigan. Beyond Wakefield were 50 miles of forest which could only be crossed by foot. There were no roads for the emerging automobiles, except through Hurley. Once Watersmeet was reached by a highway, the area was no longer isolated. County roads were built. Ironwood residents could visit Lake Superior and Lake Gogebic in most instances for the very first time. Ironwood became the commercial center for the entire area including the bordering counties in Wisconsin. 1911: By now Ironwood was one of the wealthiest districts in Michigan. Feb. 1913: Central School was destroyed by fire and so was the tower that housed the school bell. Of the 2000 grade school students, one third were left without a building. 1914-1915: A building plan was begun which would rebuild Central and replace the Norrie and Newport and Ashland frame buildings with two new ones. The Newport School in Jessieville had a gymnasium attached. 1917: The Legislature enacted Act 166, providing for the Classification of certain school districts in the State,' ’ which had been drafted by the State Teachers' Association. Local legislation, particularly on bonding, gave way to state regulations. Thus was formed the School District of the City of Ironwood. 1921: The School Board contracted with Mr. Peter J. Nickel for the construction of a new high school behind the existing Luther L. Wright High School, which would be torn down, as being too small to accommodate the increase in high school students. 1923: The architectural firm for the new school was the firm of Croft and Boener of Minneapolis. The budget was set at $916,418.41. April 2, 1924: Mr. Sleight threw out the first shovels of dirt on the site. August 1925: The new high school was completed. Feb. 5, 1926: The new Luther L. Wright High School was dedicated exactly 26 years from the day the first Luther L. Wright High School had been dedicated. THESE PAST FIFTY YEARS: The new High School was one of the finest in the world. The library was the heart of the building with the study halls extending beyond. Provisions were made for a swimming pool and for an auditorium both of which would have street access for use by the public, neither of which were ever constructed. The architectural plans are still on file. Elevators were never installed. The gymnasium had a central partition to separate the girls’ and boys' gym classes, but could be opened when the full area was needed. The cafeteria was located in the center of the building on the first floor. The years that were to follow would see many changes. The Junior High classes were separated: college classes were housed; the Domestic Science and Manual Arts buildings were rented out and then sold; areas and rooms within the building were redesigned for various purposes; community school programs made use of the building after hours; some architectural features have changed such as the elimination of the arboretums on third floor, but the decor and general architectural philosophy remains the same - sound and beautiful. 119 CLASS OF 1890 Mercy Bennett Maria Sullivan James Sullivan Charles Walker Robert J. That force is known to us all to be the Spirit of ’76.” It is a SPIRIT OF LIBERTY and the knowledge that one man’s freedom is more important than anything else on earth. It is the SPIRIT OF OPTIMISM of knowing that we can always make things better — of working only for the best, and expecting only the best. It is the SPIRIT OF FRONTIER — of not fearing to go where man has not reached. It is the SPIRIT OF DIVERSITY — of allowing every man his own view and his distinctive ways and of tolerating the differences of the society. George Washington Thomas Jefferson Alexander Hamilton James Madison John Haneoek 11 is the SPIRIT OF ITSDIVIDl ALISM — acknowledging a birthright of opportunity and freedom drawn from the strength of our fathers. Indeed the SPIRIT OF ’76” was, and is, many things, each of which has been a building block of our national greatness. Our country grew on that spirit and prospered on that spirit. When all else fails it is that spirit that will be there to guide us and keep us strong. Congratulations Best Wishes!
